I was talking about this with a friend of mine at the weekend. Getting skelped by debris is, normally, a freak occurrence. Of course it is, what's the chances of a bit falling off one car and hitting the driver 10 seconds down the road?
If that's the case... how come this is the second incident in a week? That poor guy Surtees that was killed in Formula 2 just last week by the stray tyre.
But then this isn't the first time a "freak accident" has happened twice in quick succession. I still feel sorry for poor Roland Ratzenberger. F1 enthusiasts know who he is, but generally his death in 1994 is overshadowed by the fact that just 24 hours later Ayrton Senna was killed too. Two crashes, two days, two deaths.
That all lead to changes. To be fair, it lead to sensible changes that really should have been in place to start with. Maybe changes need to be made here too, but at the moment I'm not sure what they could be. Close up the *? No chance.
But then, I'm not an expert in these things. Maybe there is something they can do without compromising the sport itself. And if that's the case, they probably should.
