On 7 September Chris Moyles becomes the longest-serving breakfast DJ on BBC Radio 1 – overtaking Tony Blackburn's record, which was set more than 30 years ago. Chris began on breakfast on January 5 2004, clocking up 2,073 days in the job while Tony Blackburn was in his post as Breakfast DJ from September 30 1967 to June 1 1973, therefore serving a total of 2,072 days.

All this week Chris and the team will be traveling through the UK on a tour bus celebrating the milestone. The 'A Night With The Chris Moyles Show' karaoke evening will be visiting Plymouth, Cardiff, Leeds, Glasgow and London.

Chris said that "We want to say thank you very much to everybody for listening and staying with us. By going out on the road for a week we are trying to thank as many people as we can."

Blackburn, when asked about handing his crown over says; "In the 60s, image was everything. Pop stars didn't tend to marry because they had to appear "available" to their female fans, and radio DJs were expected to be like pop stars: I drove around in an E Type Jaguar. But by the end of my run, I'd married and didn't fit the image any more.

I have a reputation for being cheesy, but that's all we could do in those days – I would never have got away with what Moyles does. He's sometimes very close to the edge, but that's good because it moves things on.

Moyles does the "zoo" format brilliantly, and obviously loves what he's doing; that's the key to longevity. He has been called a bully but he's not. If you don't like him, switch him off. Not many do. I'm a bit sad, but I held the record for long enough and I'm glad to be handing it over to a younger man."

As a site that has been proudly following Chris for the past 4115 days (that's eleven-and-a-bit years), we want to add our congratulations to those that will be broadcast tomorrow morning, and long may the show continue!

Absolutely! Congratulations to the whole Chris Moyles Show team, and also to you, Chris Harris, for providing us a place to come get our Moyles fix for all these years. Me and my iPod thank you.

Well that was cool, a slightly edited version of the first opening song.

Congratulations to The Chris Moyles Show.

It's also nice to have the record broken from Plymouth.

Congratulations, congratulations congratulations - you are all (to a lesser extent Matt Fincham) brilliant. The show this morning is brilliant, for the first time in ages I am going to listen to it all as it happens, my schedule for the morning can go to hell. I'm running late, but you're sounding great!

The opening song by the way - I never thought anything could make me howl with laughter at 0630 but I was very wrong.

Big fan of Chris and the Show. Have been listening since he was on the afternoon slot on Radio 1. But .... with Chris Evans winning the Radio 2 breakfast slot, this narrows the gap in audience demographic between the 2 stations at Breakfast time and it will be interesting to see what happens to the figures. I had always assumed Radio 2 would be a natural progression for Chris when he hangs up his Radio 1 mike, but where can he go now that Chris has jumped in to Terry's old chair? How long can Chris keep going at Radio 1? Hopefully way beyond his current contract to 2010 ...?

You make some interesting points. I agree, the "competition" between the R1 and R2 breakfast shows just got a lot more valid and it could go either way. I can't imagine that all of the TOGs will warm to Evans' style so I imagine a significant section of that audience might be lost - but how many more people will prefer Evans? And will there be an appreciable exodus from Moyles to Evans, which is (I imagine) less likely, but certainly possible? I quite like all this change, it seems very positive.

As for Moyles' progression post-R1, yes, that is something I hadn't thought of because I would have loved him to eventually go to R2. He still could of course, but if Evans sticks in the breakfast slot for any length of time would he be happy with Drive, or any other show come to that? I guess we'll find out when the time is right. Hopefully it won't be for aaaaaaages anyway.
