This morning, after enjoying an unexpected play of a Metallica classic on the show, I reported the feature back to my flatmate (who wasn't listening as he had been watching Transformers cartoons). I was expecting him to just agree with me that it was cool that breakfast Radio 1 had been able to play the song and that lots of people had texted in asking to hear it, but no, he launched into a cynical tirade about how if Moyles wants to play the song he'll just play it anyway, and that they only ask people to text in as some sort of marketing exercise, and that indeed, they only played the game as an excuse to play the song rather than as promotion for Edith's penultimate show, and that people shouldn't have to text in to hear songs they want to hear etc etc...

The debate passed the walk to work nicely, but I told him I'd put it to the forum. So: what do you think about text votes? Does Chris use them as some sort of self-promotion to just do stuff he wants to do anyway, or does he genuinely care about what the majority of his audience want? Was he planning to play Enter Sandman all along? Do you text in for stuff like that and if so, why? Opinions welcome...

I've no idea whether he would have played it anyway, although in the past I believe he has NOT played things because they haven't had enough texts. Maybe those were things he didn't want to play though.

The whole texting in to the show business is an audience participation thing - all the daytime shows are required (I believe?) to adhere to R1 policy on things like that, they have to do things to encourage people to text, call in, whatever - the theory being that if the audience feel that they are included in or influencing part of the show they will develop a brand loyalty thing or something. I imagine it works more with the lower end of the age demographic than the higher, it strikes me as the kind of thing "the kids" would like.

I don't text the show, but when they were doing the visual trial and had the free messaging thing I used that, I mean it was free, it would be rude not to.

Whether or not he wants to play them or not, no one has to text in to the show, so if anything the audience are the silly ones for texting in in the first place.

I used that too, because it was there while you were watching. I get free texts, but taking my phone out of my pocket and writing a text is something I'm just not inclined to do in the mornings when I'm getting ready for work.

I think the free messaging console should be included on the web site all the time.. it's not like they need the cameras to be there for it to work.

On one of the "text in if you want to hear it" occasions, I remember Chris mentioning how they'd save the texts and show to the bosses that they were playing it as it's what the listeners want. For example, playlisting would never add Enter Sandman to the tracks Moyles has to play one morning, and if there's any complaints internally, they have the text response to back up their decision. I think this was mentioned when they did the 'choose an oasis song', and as a defence for playing Champagne Supernova in full and being very late for the news.
It's no secret that many people think some playlisted songs are cack, and any excuse to replace them with a good song (like how he'll swap out a song for say, Foo Fighters, or have a "broken" Nickleback CD) is great.

Literally as I switched the radio on this morning at 7 the words about this thread were coming from Chris' lips. I just sat there with my head in my hands. I would like to state for the record that I don't believe my flatmate's crackpot theories, I was just putting it out there for discussion...

....and as for the audience participation requirement thing, that was talked about by the team on the show, aaaaaaages and ages ago when they were discussing how they got more texts than a lot of other shows and that all the shows were encouraged to ask for texts, the more the merrier.......

I heard what he said as well, he seemed to make it sound we were a bunch of crackpots who make up strange theories. Chris some advice mate, you read the whole thing written not the first line or a couple of lines, its the WHOLE thing mate. That is all!

Chris mentioned your post on air.He found your flat mates theory rather amusing I think.Surely you've listened to Chris long enough to know he does what he wants when he wants and doesnt give a stuff what management thinks.Thats why we like him and why hes the nno 1 DJ in the country (apart from Wogan)

If only that was true, alas I doubt it though, an example is the the woeful golden hour which for reasons unknown I am sure he is not allowed to play anything before 1990 in the first half hour, and after two years its a rule he has never broken, I really wish he would.
