Aled really - I KNOW that you are a sensitive, talented and intelligent radio producer. The evidence for all that is overwhelming. But it is genuinely disturbing that you could have reached whatever age you are now without absorbing the generalities of life which, whilst they might not form the experiences of all of us, at least penetrate our consciousness. Why not yours? Have you been SO sheltered? Or are you just unobservant? Or just unaware of the world beyond your personal space? I can readily believe that you don't find a lot of these comedians funny, but I can't believe that you have absolutely no concept of why other people do. As for the camembert and venison - how? How do you reach adulthood without at least hearing the words, even if you never come across them in person?

I love you Aled, but you worry me, you really do!

I too love Aled but I'd have to admit it does surprise me that he doesn't know what those things are - I don't eat them either, but I certainly know what they are. That said, I don't know how I know - neither of them are things my parents would eat, and it's true the news doesn't generally help you glean information on types of cheese.

I wasnt around for the 2nd world war but I know who won it!

He obviously never reads or listens to anything other than gossip about Big Brother or the X factor.

Its not to do with listening to the news, its to do with being open and receptive to the world as you go through it.

The last thing I want to do is mock Aled. Despair of him sometimes yes, but not mock him!

* me! you are one dull individual,do you work for the Politically Correct party?

Where you one of the morons who phoned up to complain about Anton Du Beke??

It is humourous and quite frankly Aled would agree as he seems to revel in being a dunce!

Its not about class its about asking questions!

Does he not go food shopping? stop at the deli and look at the cheese?
Has he never been to a restaurant and asked what venison is?

I encourage my kids to be curious about the world around them,I dont want them to live in a bubble.

Out of interest, how do you find Moyles' (and the team's) teasing of Aled about it?

No, i didn't phone up to complain about Anton Du Beke (real name Anthony Beak) - but i did find it offensive that he used the word which he did.

This is from personal experience, as i myself am from a south asian ethnicity and have gotten into verbal and physical fights over the use of this word. It's one which has MANY negative stereotypes attached to it, and furthermore goes on to imply that all asian people are similar to those of pakistan which is in itself ignorant.

I've had the word used against me since i was little, and never in a positive way. It's a hurtful word and for someone in the media spotlight to think it acceptable to use it to refer to someone who has had a tan is offensive.

There's a big difference in making light of someone not knowing something simple, and inferring that you know his intellectual boundaries and habits. Almost everything you have said has been based on your interpretation of aled, rather than knowing anything.

Are you aware of what jelabi is? Or which meat is commonly used in Sri Lankan Rolls? Because i guarantee that there's somewhere not more than a few miles from you that will sell them, and you'll be ignorant to it. Also, you referred to being street wise - and i don't think a knowledge of cheese/deer meat falls under the category of 'streetwise'.

I find the team's mocking of aled funny, but that's because they're close enough to him for their comments not to hurt - and to know that there's jest about them - it's slightly different when it's someone who doesn't know him, and is saying things like 'unless it's in big brother or heat, aled won't know about it'.

It doesn't. Aled is very intelligent. I hope I am guilty only of affectionate teasing here.

Chrysostom wrote:No, i didn't phone up to complain about Anton Du Beke (real name Anthony Beak) - but i did find it offensive that he used the word which he did.

So did I. My two older kids are both 25% Asian in descent and my son in particular suffered appallingly as a result of the general acceptance of such "lighthearted banter".

Edit:-
It occurs to me reading this back that I may be guilty of a double standard here. I think I am just gently poking fun at Aled in the same way as the team did this morning - but is that all really? I expect that's all Anton du Beke thought he was doing too (although the arseholes who bullied my son were certainly not in that category), so - does that make me no better than Anton? Or is what he said worse because it was "racist"?

Its a bloody minefield out here!

I live in Dorking so very unlikely to be sold here!

So are you saying that all people who use that word are racists?

Please, for the love of God, do not start that pathetic debate.

I do think though that most people would consider not having heard of camembert or venison far more unusual than not having heard of jelabi. Let's be realistic here.
