Yuds, i don't think anything you've said has sounded of cruel intention or making aled appear to be a blind idiot. I was so disappointed at brucie coming out and saying get a sense of humour

edit. leaving the race issue alone, because there's really no hope for people who take the ethos of "I'm not racist but..."

So are you saying that all people who use that word are racists?

All people who use the word are either racist or ignorant.

It is a nasty, vile word with so many negative connotations. Not everyone uses it in a spiteful and racist way, but those who don't are most definitely ignorant. There is a very good explanation of why here.

Tell me - do you read the Daily Mail / Express?

Who has said im not racist but.......?

The Anton thing should have been dealt with in a private manner and not in the press which just highlights the word used.

I was called lots of things when I was a Policeman but I just smiled and got on with my day,if Aled takes offence to being called a dunce then thats a little sad as Im sure he has been called a lot worse things.

And my final point (honestly) is would you want him in your pub quiz team???

Bollocks!

Its the tone in which the word is used that makes the difference,he said it in a jovial manner not an aggressive way and although he should not have used it the whole issue was blown out of proportion.

I read the Independant but Im guessing that you are implying that if I did read the mail then that makes me a racist??

Please, for the love of God, do not start that pathetic debate.

urgh...i was referring to the way that the phrase would slot into your comments about the issue. (bold bits are added as subtext)

example :

Do you think Carol Thatcher should still be in a job per chance? Have you read the blogpost I linked to? I actually linked to the wrong post (although it was still relevant), I meant to link to this one. It's worth reading.

Well, so do I sometimes and I suppose not all Daily Mail readers are racist - that would be generalising - but the Daily Mail most definitely publishes racist right-wing propaganda, which quite often agrees with BNP policies, despite their insistence that they detest the BNP. Quite a large proportion of their readers, however, judging by comments on many of their articles, do not detest the BNP in the slightest.

Funny thing about that word, in my final year of High School there was a bit of a "split" between Muslims & all other races for some strange reason. Certain Muslims kept referring to theirselves as p*** on purpose to apparently "wind up the white & black kids". They also said they were claiming back the word

Thankfully that all got resolved in six months

haha, that's a clear case of copying black culture in america...but would never work (not in the next 20 years anyhoo)

back on topic, there's a fine line between comments in jest and bullying, which links us nicely to aled's bullying special on BBC wales tonight :)

So you are trying to mislead people on here by using phrases that I have never said.

Are you a journalist?

Aled's tweets on the bullying programme a few weeks ago were really interesting. Apparently he wanted to interview his former bullies as part of the programme but they (or most of them at least) refused the invitation. Not surprising of course, but it was a great idea so such a shame it didn't work out as he'd hoped.

I'm sure it'll still be a worthwhile result though. I'm visiting my Mum (who has Sky - I don't) tonight, so may try to catch it.

I feel the need to reply. Not because I'm sensitive (you broadcast to 9 million with the text console on in the studio - you CAN'T be sensitive!) but because I don't want anyone walking around being what I believe is ignorant if they think not knowing certain meats and cheeses make you thick or a dunce.

I don't know why I didn't know that. I'll avoid having a go at my parents because I love them and think they did an amazing job in the way they brought me up. As for an adult I have an incredibly small menu of food. I have one meal for each type of restaurant I go to. Rightly or wrongly that doesn't make me thick. Just un-cultured, and I'm fine with that. If I wasn't fine I'd experiment more.

How do I get to be a producer on Radio 1? - by loving and being good at my job hopefully. I don't read newspapers. I do however read a magazine a day, Economist, Focus, Private Eye, Empire, Broadcast, Music Week, T3, Stuff Heat etc but no, none on food - because I have no interest in food. Also, I have several dozen website on daily browse (again, none food based) and when it comes to tv, American trash, Question time and rolling news for me (no food programmes).

Are we really judging someone's overall ability and intelligence by how much food knowledge they have?

I work very hard and when I'm not working I'm with my other half, so I don't have time to pay attention to other people's eating habits or stop at the deli counter and ask about certain foods (I get it delivered: again, due to time constraints).

Hope that helps give a bit more insight :) and hopefully stop those 'worrying' about me :)

I'm a lot like that myself (because of dietry issues), and unlike you I do feel very insecure about it. It's good to be reminded that liking every type of food isn't the be all and end all.

I did find what you said this morning strange however, so please forgive my curiosity about it. I was just rather astonished to find someone out there who appeared to know even less about food than a fussy eater like me.

Sorry Al - you brought out the mother-hen in me a bit this morning.

By the way, just in case you were in any doubt - it was a very funny piece of radio.

I had no idea what welsh rarebit was until i saw it on a menu a few months ago. these things are easily done, and it's people who catch onto this and decide to make a massive issue of it who are just trying to laugh at others.

there's a massive difference between finding a person's lack of knowledge (about something you percieve to be simple) humourous and assuming that because they don't know it that they have no basic life skills.

never nice to read lies or preconceptions about yourself - luckily i'm not in the public eye...i don't think i'd be able to take it!

That is not always the case (unless you're referring to the people who were actually questioning his intelligence) - sometimes it's just pure suspicion/disbelief. Why else do think Aled is so often suspected in here of exaggerating his naivety?

Although now we know he doesn't do that and he is being honest.

I'm more than happy for it to be the basis of humour. I still have no idea what Welsh rarebit is! But it's when someone draws a direct link from my lack of knowledge about food and my suitability for doing other things that I think I should say something.

Anyway, I asked 6 people what those food substanes were on the street outside radio 1 and recorded their answers. I'll be playing the result tomorrow morning.

Hats off to you for replying.

However....

I didnt base my opinions entirely on food stuffs, its based on things like not getting jokes and just seeming to live in your own little bubble and not being aware of whats going on around you.
In hindsight and reading back my posts though I would change some of the terms I used such as dunce which is a little harsh,as you say maybe you just arent particularly cultured (nor am I for that matter)

I think the phrase "I like what I know and I know what I like" might have been penned for you!

Still no excuse for not knowing what those 2 foods were though!! :D
