I haven't listened to the show properly for about 3-4 weeks, didn't realise he was turning up late more often (oh dear, let's hope he doesn't go the way of Evans). I'll be honest I can understand the difficulty of juggling many jobs but he's been a bit risky being late every so often, perhaps the R1 management have "compromised" and let him do the first link on his mobile, I don't know to be honest.

Funny thing is, when Tarrant used to do the Capital FM breakfast show, and he was doing millionaire at the same time, he used to pre-record the first half hour of the show. The only problem is that because Moyles' style is so different to Tarrant's, I doubt he could get away with it.

steve leady wrote:Yeah but I'm currently stuck behind the other 700,00 all queuing to get out! Thing is, I've listened to him for a long time and there are good bits and bad bits to every show. (Except Scott Mills - his whole show is dreadful but my lift to work insists on keeping him on) But of late I've got really bored with him, I don't reckon he cares anymore and is just repeating the same old crap every day. Yesterday I reckon he was very close to a proper on air row with Aled, it was not good radio. Of the present Radio 1 lineup Vernon Kay is the only one I'd want on instead of Chris - and to be truthful I'd rather Chris put some effort in and start producing a show with some original ideas in it.

May I suggest Geoff Lloyd on Absolute Radio (5-8pm), I gave him a listen last night & though he was rather good, didn't dislike a single song when I listened. If you're not in London however, and your lift to work doesn't have a DAB radio then you'll have to make do with crackly old 1215AM I'm afraid.

Before anyone else does it:

Well Moyles has only been late about twice in 2 weeks and one of those times he was only late by a couple of minutes because of traffic. The newspapers just like slagging him off at EVERY possible opportunity!!

If you have to be in the office at 6.30, and have a twenty minute journey which might take longer if traffic is bad, and you make a point of only rolling out of bed at six o clock (which he has said many times he does, or even later), then its not the traffic's fault that you are late.

Quite especially if you have a producer to give you multiple alarm calls and a pre-arranged taxi to get you there is in plenty of time...once it was funny e.g. the stories of them hearing the start of the Saturday show in Chris' kitchen before jumping in to Dave's Capri, but now on breakfast it displays a lack of professionalism that you wouldn't expect especially when the media isn't exactly friendly to begin with, it just gives them ammunition.

Can someone clarify - is Dave gonna be on with Vernon or not? I'm sure Chris said "it'll be Vernon with Aled" and didn't mention Dave, but I may have missed it.

Aled's in Uganda with Chris, Dave will be in the studio with Vernon. As will Dom and Carrie and Rachel I think.

Yeah, I obviously wasn't listening properly! I was just wondering about Dave's presence for my Tedious page.

About Vernon, seeing how long he's been on the radio now, I can't understand how he can be sooooo bad on the desk. Surely he should be competent by now...?

Well that's what happens now less and less 'radio' talent and instead bringing in TV presenters/celebrities and giving them a show. Moyles, Mills and even Greg James are seemingly a dying breed especially with commercial radio resorting more and more to networking.

steve leady wrote:As for Vernon Kay 'standing in' for Chris Moyles - well frankly I hope it's permanent. I'm bored of hearing him start the show from a mobile phone in the back of his taxi - a taxi that was probably paid for out of the licence fee. It was amusing the first couple of times, now it simply smacks of being lazy and unprofessional. Seeing as he's making bucket loads of extra cash out of the weak TV show and a crap album that most people will have forgotten about by the second week of January, perhaps it's about time he bought a decent alarm clock. He's beginning to sound more like Chris Evans every week that goes by.

Can you REALLY be bored of something that happens a couple of times a year?

Or are you just trying a bit too hard to be outraged?

Have to say that I really enjoyed the first hour & half of Vernon this morning, the phone in feature made me laugh, especially the fake Welshman & Rachel's reaction

I'm wondering if, like me, you 'only bother' when the mighty Chris Moyles is on.
Vernon? No, sorry, but no.

Really? Honestly I used to dislike Vernon but hes actually rather good when he fills in for Chris & works well with Dave, Dom & Rachel/Aled, give today's show a listen, you may be surprised :)

Sometimes when Vernon's in I get a bit of a sense of 'forced hilarity' - like they're trying a bit too hard to make things funny and spontaneous. I can't really think of a specific example, but I just find it not quite as easy a listen. It makes me think that if Chris were to leave and Vernon to replace him (as has been speculated many a time), I wouldn't listen.

^That's the impression I get too - like they're trying to continue the flavour of the show as if nothing's changed, but it just doesn't work. Plus, there's no playful conflict between host and co-hosts (and if they try it, that also appears forced) and much of the time it all seems too... nicey-nicey? :?

For some reason Dave's voice sounds totally different and a bit weird when he's presenting with Vernon and I don't like it.

As an aside, I usually like Vernon on his own show.

Vernon in for Chris is good for a stand-in, but I wouldn't want it to become the norm. As opposed to Scott in for Chris, which is just rubbish even for a short period of time.

But at least Scott just does Scott's show when he stands in, so listening or not listening is an easy choice.

I guess they can't force the rest of Chris' team to take time off whenever he does, but I wish they'd try out different guest hosts and hadn't settled on Vernon.

I'm not convinced whether I'd listen to Chris Evans or Vernon in the new year whenever Vernon's in for Chris... however, when Scott Mills is doing it, I'll definitely be listening to Chris Evans.

I like Vernon but I can't disagree with this at all. It isn't fair to compare him (or anyone else for that matter) with Chris though, he is really supreme.

Chris has been working in Radio for nearly 18 years now, nearly 13 of those at Radio 1, so I'd imagine he'd become more accustomed to the different type of desks, whereas Vernon has been there 5 years. Dave's been there 13 years & apparently still can't operate the desks

As for the atmosphere, I don't think it's "false" more likely that Vernon is more cheerier than Moyles at times & perhaps, oh Christ I don't know, All I know is that:

Vernon>Vaughan>Mills

I don't think its false, just a different dynamic. Its going to be a bit sticky at times with one "newbie" sitting at the head of the rest of the established team I guess, but Vernon's nice.

Apologies Yudster, the "false" bit wasn't aimed at yourself, a few up thread mentioned that it felt a bit false.
