The best thing you can do to avoid a c section is to keep on your feet and moving around for as long as possible - and when you do have to sit or lie down, never never never on your back. If you do that, the baby's head will - well for the sake of squeamish people I won't go into detail, but it makes it far more likely that the baby will get stuck if you try to deliver lying on your back.
As for pain free, the only thing that will guarantee that is a spinal or epidural. And that in its turn makes the likelihood of needing a c section much greater.......the pain is just a fact of life that you have to deal with best you can Cat. Keep an open mind and decide about what you want in the way of pain relief when you have to, because you can't possibly know how you're going to cope before it happens. I found I could manage on gas and air only, but I felt very strongly beforehand that I didn't want anything else. If you don't have those strong feelings, just go with the flow and if you want it, ask. Loudly!
