I was originally going to post this in 'Annoying', but I guessed that it might warrant its own thread. I'm wondering what people here make of the reported future cuts at the BBC: http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/media/article7041944.ece

BBC Online has provided a summary of the cuts as well: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8538530.stm

From the comments I've read so far in various places, a lot of people (the licence fee complainers especially) don't seem to care or are happy about it, but I find it rather depressing.

It seems as though there will be little left for the demographic I'll be in (late 20s-30s) by the time this happens, especially in radio. And the teens have been even more shunted. I'd also hate for anything to happen to the Radio Times!

But then I've always been a fairly loyal consumer of the BBC and have never had an issue with the licence fee... maybe others feel differently?

I'll be honest I'm really pissed off with the supposed axing of 6 Music, I listen to that station quite a bit, it's much better than Radio 1 & 2, interesting part from that link you posted:

RADIO
According to reports, two digital stations - BBC Asian Network and 6 Music - will be closed to save money.

BBC 7, which consists mainly of repeats, will be renamed Radio 4 Extra.

Torin Douglas writes: The Asian Network's audience has been going down, reflecting changes in programme policy over the years.

But the BBC Trust recently said 6 Music was distinctive and well-liked by its listeners, and should be encouraged to reach a bigger audience.

If BBC 6 Music has been praised, why close it? Why rebrand BBC 7 as Radio 4 Extra, when there is already a speech station? If they are to close 6 Music then they'd need to rejig Radio 1 & Radio 2's output to accomidate the audience, if anything what makes it even more annoying is that 6 Music has some great presenters & it'll be a shame to lose them. :(

Very unhappy about this, I bet the Mail were involved ;)

BBC Online is brilliant, I would hate to see it axed. I don't care if it is anti-competition, the competition is shite anyway.

Exactly, this is my problem with this whole "bullying" (for want of a better word) of the BBC's success, we all know how popular & succesful ITV was & radio stations like Capital FM were, they're partially to blame for their own downfall (especially in ITV's case) and yet they keep trying to shit on the BBC. Sky also moan about the BBC been uncompetitive & have a hold on the market, something which Sky don't have at all of course

Murdoch complaining about anyone else stifling the market is so hypocritical, it's hilarious.

The cynic in me was thinking this information was just leaked to create a storm and encourage more listeners to 6Music that way, rather than for the BBC to spent thousands on marketing. But if the closure goes ahead, that's a poor decision. Look, what they're saving on Jonathan Ross' salary from this summer pays for two-thirds of 6Music's budget - just get rid of either Anne Robinson or Graham Norton and they're there ...

Could be a "ploy" by the BBC to get more listening to 6Music, you never know. ;)

I did like Chris' comments yesterday, apparently people were accusing Chris of earning £6.2 million & said that if the BBC sacked him then 6Music could be saved, Chris said something along the lines of that he didn't earn near as much as that & that if he did then he would buy/fund the station iteslef although would put Geroge Lamb on BBC 7 but that's only because there isn't a BBC 26

So Chris at least seems to see it as an important station. The only other one I can think of that is similar is XFM and even then that's a poor shadow of what it used to be. As you say Ross is off so I don't see why then need to close it seeing as his large chunk of the wages will be saved.

For me, if the BBC do close down 6Music it'll be one of the worst decisions they've taken in years. I actually feel so strongly about this I'm even considering writing in (and I never do that), anyone know who I'd need to contact?

Bloody Mark Thompson, he just seems to streamline sodding everything :X

Well at least I've got 22 more months of 6Music but even so I'm very pissed off, hopefully 6Music can be saved. I still don't see why we need two speech stations (Radio 4 & Radio 4 Extra, which is BBC 7's new name) surely the diverse music station is far, far more important? It's not like any commercial station is interested in championing new music like Marc Rielly, Steve Lamac, etc on 6Music do.

Thanks Mark Thompson, you arse :(

It's amazing how little both BBC 6 Music and Radio 1 cost in the grand scheme of things (click to view image in its own page if it doesn't fit):

Looking at the above chart, I am surprised by how much I use the BBC. Their websites, their news coverage, the radio and the various tv programmes from BBC 1 and BBC 2. Can I see areas that I don't use? Sure - ditch the Parlimant channel and the Asian Network - but I bet they are very popular at the audiences they are targeted at.

The BBC is simply the best at what it does, not just in the UK but in the world. I'm not saying it's perfect - any large company is gonna have its downsides, but personally the ups outweigh the downs so many times over. Is it worth the license fee? Without a doubt. The alternative is, in my opinion, not worth thinking about. As soon as the Beeb has to start making programmes to please advertisers and not the license payers, it will start to deteriorate.

I'm personally really narked off at seeing Moyles continually made a scapegoat for these cuts. I've seen comments in the papers a few times about his salary and this morning someone I don't know has commented on a friend's facebook status with a "start by sacking that fat tw@t" type of line. As if that would save 6Music or change the directors' minds about the lack of unique listeners that 6Music brings to the BBC.

Clearly Radio 1 between half 6 and 10 should just be turned off.

Actually, the more I watch this "Save 6 Music" campaign, the more I think it's mainly musical snobs that are behind it. Musical snobs are some of the most annoying folk I know, so * 6 Music.

Its hardly musical snobbery. 6Music plays a massive variety of music, aswell as giving new up and coming bands vital exposure. Radio 1 sticks to a rigid playlist of chart music. Simple.

We're musical snobs because we don't like listening to f$&^ing Rihanna all day?

I don't want to see Moyles go, but I'd definitely love to see some Radio 1 heads roll if it saved 6Music. *glares at Fearne Cotton*

As most Radio 1 DJ's are glorified jukeboxes anyway, as all they do is play the chart records, they could axe a few and replace them with an automated song system. DJ's like Moyles are okay as they actually have guests and features.

That advert they keep playing saying Radio 1 has 'The best DJ's in the world' always makes me collapse with laughter.

That has also pissed me off somewhat, there are sadly just sad * out there that always blame Moyles part of that is due to the Daily Hate & their continuing slagging off of anyone who isn't white, old & from Surrey.

I'll give you "* 6Music" mateyboy! ;)

As English Bob said it's not music snobbery, it's the station I listen to the most as it's music is very varied compared to virtually every other station. The DJ's on there also have a "personality" (for want of a better word) and actually inform & speak of why they particularly like certain tracks.

Radio 1 is full of shite music that's played on a loop (much like Capital FM, Kiss FM & biggest culprit Heart 106.2) and with the Exception of Moyles, James, Kay & Coxy I really can't be * arsed with the station any more, once Moyles is off so am I.

Get this:

Radio 1 and 6Music can get *!

Both shite, I only listen the the breakfast show and have never.....ever....ever listend to 6music

I do believe 6music is a bit up its own arse as are the listeners, but at the same time I think if Radio 1 was a person it would be a Chav.

I suppose it depends on your musical tastes, personally I think it's the best station since Capital FM circia 1995-1999

EDIT: If it wasn't for 6 Music I wouldn't have discovered quite a few groups I'm a fan of, problem with most radio these days is that it plays chart friendly dross sadly.

Depending on what shows you listen to, you can get some very good music on Radio 2 (Radcliffe and Maconie and Simon Mayo plays some good stuff too.)

I never said saving 6music was musical snobbery, I said a lot of the folk behind the campaign appear to be those annoying musical snobs. There's a difference.

True, Radcliffe & Maconie and Mayo are both excellent shows, I should listen to them more often actually.

My apologies Munki, and yes I agree on that point, I've noticed that since I joined that Facebook group, I commented on one of the posts there that said Moyles should be sacked to save the station, for what it's worth

My feelings exactly. I think my taste in music is too specialised for a station like 6Music - when I've heard it they play an odd good song, then an awful lot of what I consider to be obscure drivel. Hence why I only listen to Manchester Rock Radio other than Moyles. I do agree that many other stations are generic pop shite and there's no need for it - but I won't care especially if 6 closes.

I don't listen to 6 Music, but I don't want it to go. I liked the idea of it being around for when I grow out of Radio One.

Plus, a major reason I've never given it a proper go is that I simply don't have access to digital radio. I have a DAB radio in my bedroom that I use to listen to R1, but as it happens that's the only station that works on it properly without breaking up. That is, as long as it stays in one spot in the room. And as long as nothing else near it is switched on.

I agree with you that on that front in all honesty, if there had to be that choice then I'd choose Moyles, there are other ways I can source unsigned acts after all :)
