To be fair though Topher, ITV more or less did a Brookside on it. Considering that Thames Television was the only former ITV franchise to survive after they lost their franchise (and still do in a round about way today as Talkback Thames) the series did well for around 8-10 years, the problem was they started tinkering with it (the dropping of the 1988 theme for a start) and I think they fiddled with it one too many times which alienated a lot of their audience. I watched some of the 1988 episodes & highly enjoyed them, I watched an episode of The Bill last year and just lost interest in it unfortunately.
Maybe it is for the best in the long run, but it's a shame that the show is being axed after so many years, I doubt however that it'll get a revival in 5-10 years like Doctor Who did, mainly as many have tried to do their version of The Bill & they've failed.
