Well so far the result has been very good as far as I can tell - by which I mean when I went to our polling station I asked what the turnout was like and they said it was really high. That is definitely a result.

I can't get enthusiastic about the idea of compulsory voting, but i do wish people would realise what an important privilege it is. People the world over are dying to try to gain that privilege - we have it handed to us with no hardship involved, and we discard it as though its unimportant. Its one of those things that gives you a glimpse of what much of the rest of the world sees when they look at us - fat, lazy stupid people who don't know how lucky we are.

Compulsory voting seems downright un-democratic for some reason. I am torn because, as a poll worker, I'm OK with light turnouts because it makes for an easier day, but it's also frustrating because people are passing up a very important opportunity. (Both our countries may very well be fat, lazy, and stupid. Just be thankful you don't have the Tea Party movement.)

Lib Dems all the way! Not sure it will make much difference in my constituency, but hey. It's been a safe Tory seat for yeeeeeeeears, but Lib Dems always beat Labour here, so meh!

I took a risk and voted Lib Dem in what has been a Lab-Con marginal. If my friend (who is a Lib Dem councillor) is to be believed, boundary changes as well as an upturn in Lib Dem support means they have a decent chance here.

I went for Labour in the end, I was torn between them & the Lib Dems but in the end chose Labour. In all honesty my local MP, Mike Gapes, has done a rather good job in Ilford South, he's one of those rare MP's that actually does go round town & fights for things in the area. I also did the same for the council as well, we have had a Tory council for the last 8 years & they have been * awful.

In their reign they have closed our local swimming pool and decided not to build a new one after spending £5million+ on "Researching" into it, completely scrapped a plan to regenerate a large area of the town centre, again after spending several million looking into it, and scrapped it because they decide it would be "too dear", yet at the same time relayed the tiles in an area of the town centre last year even though they were only layed down three years prior. Quite frankly the Tory council here need to go, pronto.

As I say the Lib Dems nearly swayed me but to be honest as I say my MP has done a fairly good job, plus he seemed to be the only one near me who had posted leaflets through our door on quite a few occasions, whereas even now I still don't know who the Tory & Lib Dem candidates are for MP here.

Ha, wow, that is something else, I agree. You can't beat reality, when you think of the Hollywood hype factor and the trouble they go to in order to make fight scenes look great. Five stars.

Yeah, not really sure what to make of the outcome this morning. Clearly though, taking CM.net as an example of how things'd unfold is waaaaaaaaaay off.

Main thoughts this morning are disapointment that Lib Dems have not done as well as i'd hoped and anger that * stain Gordon * face is still in charge.

I'd take Gordon Brown over Call Me Dave any day you like.

I think the result this morning is better than it was looking like being as I went to bed at about 1.30 - the first results coming through were Labour strongholds, which they kept, but there was a big enough swing in those seats to the Tories for people to be talking about an overall Tory majority.

Well. The sad but inevitable conclusion you simply have to draw from this is that the Lib Dems have now proved themselves completely unelectable. If they can't capitalise on the strength of public goodwill they have generated in the run up to this election - in fact they have gone backwards in terms of results - they really never will.

What happens next depends on the last few results and whether Labour can convince themselves (let alone anyone else) that they have a right to keep control of government. If they do, a Labour/Lib Dem coalition is attractive on the face of it, but I don't think the Libe Dems want that, I think they will give their support to the Tories in order to force Brown out of office.

The next 12 hours are going to be important!

When questioned, Mandelson indicated that it was a possibility that there could be a Lib-Lab coalition without Gordon Brown as leader. Well, he didn't totally dismiss it, he said it was "one of a number of permutations".

Taking the internet as a whole seems to be way off. The tories have a ridiculously small percentage of votes everywhere I've looked, yet 40% of the UK voting public voted for them.

The interesting thing for me though was what happened in Scotland. Salmond was his usual way off the mark - proclaiming at 3am that his party were going to take seats - and what's actually ended up happening is nothing at all. Every single seat in Scotland has gone the same way it did in 2005. In my constituency there was a 3.2% swing away from the Tories towards Labour - and my constituency until 1997 was a Tory stronghold!

Actually, there's a single Tory MP for the entire country up here, and they'll likely be the government! I can see a fight coming... Salmond's gonna love that...

Of the six candidates only Gapes, Boutle & Jestico bothered to turn up to hear the result (which I believe was declared at 6am), the rest didn't even bother.

My brother also seems to think that Labour have taken a lot of the council seats in Redbridge as well although Ilford North is still Tory.

In rather excellent news the BNP didn't win a single seat, lost all their council seats in Barking & analyst reckon that the BNP may be on the way out apparently, if there's one good thing to come out of this election it's that the BNP lost loads, thank God.
