I have to admit I watched Top Gear and caught up with the football later.

Yudster wrote:Huge congratulations to Diego Forlan who totally deserved the Player of the Tournament award. Not just for his own achievements on the pitch, but for the way he lifted his team to so far beyond their level they reached the semi final, and could have gone further. They'd have played a far better final than Holland for a start.

Needless to say, I agree. :D Forlan just tweeted to say he's boarded the plane to Montevideo and I wish so badly I was doing the same thing. How typical that this is the first year in ages I'm not going. I can't wait to hear about their heros' return tonight (it takes me 24 hours and 3 stop-overs to get there but I assume they'll manage it in about half that time!) - I only hope Adrian Chiles gets to hear all the details. ;)

And HAHAHAHAHAHA at those ratings! ITV were dreadful and I hated how unlucky I was with the number of matches on that channel.

As for Top Gear, I was very tempted to switch over during the dull first half hour of the game, especially when I heard about Rupert Grint! I look forward to watching his leader board-topping lap on the iPlayer tonight. :D

Although I was cheering Holland to win since England got knocked out, I have to say the best team won deservedly. It's strange seeing Holland play like that, they're normally fair players, I think they probably went into the game with a "we're probably not going to win this" attitude & did what they did yesterday.

However congratulations to Spain, they deserved it :)

Johann Cruyff tells it like it is: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 812484.stm

I said this earlier in the tournament. It was REALLY disappointing to see both Brazil and Holland resorting to the boring, negative tactics of being solid rather than the beautiful, free-flown football they are so famous for. Holland topped it off yesterday by just trying to kick Spain off the park, and a stronger referee would have ended the match as a contest a lot sooner.

To be fair to Howard Webb, it wasn't his fault Holland played like that. He has a track record of trying to keep players on the park in big matches (go see the Carling Cup final and ask how Vidic stayed on the park for instance - Martin O'Neill did) and that almost seemed evident last night too. Sadly in the modern game that doesn't so much "keep the contest alive" or "stop the game being ruined by red cards" as commentators are so fond of insisting, it more allows the players to think they can get away with booting their opponents up in the air.

Spain have been a far cry from the brilliant footballing side we saw in Euro 2008, but despite never quite clicking they never wavered from the tactics that make them good to watch. They deserve credit for that much. Hopefully by the time the next World Cup comes round, the likes of Brazil and Holland will be back to the teams we all know and love. They'll need to be, because that young German team are only going to get better.

Still, the World Cup is over and those of us that have been on the sidelines can now look forward to a qualifying campaign for Euro 2012. Last time Scotland tried to qualify for the Euros we found ourselves in a group with the World Cup winners Italy, the World Cup runners up France, and the World Cup quarter finalists Ukraine. This time we only have the World Cup winners. Sigh. Oh for an easy group JUST ONCE...

There were lots of yellows early on though - surely with most teams that would have served as a warning, no?

Agreed, his restraint, yes I know 14 cards is not that restrained, was to keep the match going.

Strong physical sides can win games though, at least they did not do that.

Spain are a good side in all positions, and play well as a team, Hollands tactics I can understand, the game....Boring.

Spain deserved to win as they played there game. If the Dutch had played there normal game then I think it would have been a classic! I watched the match in my local that was full of dutch and spanish students. It was great!

Cruyff is a massive twat who would be gutted if Holland won the World Cup because they might not show that shitty * turn he did every five seconds in future. He will be claiming responsibility for the Spain win too the arsehole.

Replace Cruyff with Beckenbauer and turn with tackle and it pretty much stands for him too.

Don't get me started on Geoff Hurst.
