I've been a caller a few times or Radio 1 I'll give you some pointers:
1) When you fill in the form, make sure you write in the box between 9 and 10 you listen to radio 1 and try and write something remotely witty like you're dreading going to work or something.
2) If you get called it will be before 2pm (the Broadcast Assistants on the show work until 2pm) It is usually Mel or Ros but it can vary.
3) When you get the call from a witheld number be ready to sound lively, exciting and friendly
4) You will be asked any on the following...
General trivia regarding the show, this is a piece of piss for regular listeners, it's usually something like 'Where is Chris from?'
Current knowledge of a recent show, either regarding a guest who was on recently, a new feature or competition
Your favourite team member and why
What you do at the weekend to socialise (you need to sound more exciting than just saying 'I watch the TV') if you don't have a very exciting life then make up an interesting backstory like your a base-jumper on weekends or something like that.
(it's ok to lie a bit, it's just showbusiness, it's all smoke an mirrors and remember Carpark Catchphrase is a feature and not a competition)
You will also be asked more personal questions about yourself
The golden rule is 'Sound lively and interesting' I know they have had some crap callers in the past but it must have been a slow day on the phones for them to get on.
Usually 10 people who fill in the online form will get called, after interviewing everyone they will call back and either you will be the lucky one or you will be told you are the backup caller. Don't worry just keep trying, and in the past they have had to use the backup callers.
If you are selected you will be called up around 8.45 to check you are awake and then called back at 9.35ish when you are in your car.
You'll be reminded of the rules by the broadcast assistant then put through to the studio where you have to listen to the two songs which are always played before the game. If you are a new caller you will be caller two,
when Chris asks 'caller two whats your name and where'd you come from' you have to reply in an excited voice 'Hi Chris, my name is ... and I'm from ....' (you are reminded this by the BA before peing put through to the studio.
I hope this helps you get on air and gives you an insight into what to expect.
