Yes, it has a kind of rubber ring around the base so that when you're beating away it doesn't slip all over the worktop.

Aled, quick question, back when Mark & Lard used to be on air Radio 1 in London had to hand control over to BBC Manchester & once they had finished Mark & Lard had to hand it back to Radio 1 back in Manchester. My question is, apart from the regions, does this still occur for any of the DJ's during the daytime schedule or are all DJ's now based down in London these days?

Hi Aled!
I'm just wondering whether even on a trial basis, could the pre-1990 ban on golden hour first half hour choices be removed. As I mentioned on another thread, I think Radio1 underestimate the music knowledge of younger listeners. I'm 22 myself and I know plenty of my mates who definetly enjoy listening to some great old 80's tracks! Have a Facebook vote if you don't beleive me:)

I know you mentioned before that there is a lot of debate around what format the online running order should take, but why cant we have this format back and then let the techies put all the toys they like underneath out of the way!

06:30 - News and Sport
06:35 – Vernon and the team are broadcasting live from Edinburgh, the home of Scott Mills the Musical. Vernon recaps on his cameo role last night and is still excited about it all
07:00 - News and Sport
07:15 – Dave gives his report of the Musical shenanigans recorded live last night at Pleasance in Edinburgh
07:30 - News and Sport
07:40 – Vernon and Dave find out who was the better driver from their trip to Rockingham on Wednesday. It was a close call, but overall Vernon was was the winner and, if there was no-one else available, could be Schumacher's replacement.
08:00 - News and Sport
08:05 – Vernon rubs it in that he was victorious at the race track
08:20 – We play clips of Vernon’s big moment treading the boards in Scott Mills The Musical. We hear his rendition of MC Hammer’s ‘Can’t Touch This’ and his venture into a bit of freestyle breakdancing. It is quite impressive

The chapters mixed into the running order is a pain in the ass because you dont know what time the chapter started.

Oh and please let Viaduct be the returning feature!!!

I'm afraid the answer to both your questions isn't pretty - and coincidentally both have the same answer. We have an opinion on a lot of stuff about our show (if not everything) but at the end of the day on a lot of stuff we don't make the rules. We can argue them (and we do - believe me) but at the end of the day if Radio 1 management don't want a half hour of Radio 1 playing music before a certain year - it's their call. They pay our wages and the have the right to make that call.

As for the running order we have tweaked the current format in every single way we can and configured it to make it look as close to what we'd like but what you're looking at is some form of dynamic page which uses a format adopted across the BBC - eventually all BBC radio shows will be based on this system so we can't go changing it. We've fed back to the powers that be what things we'd like but unfortunately for our running order this page needs to be standardised and have the format fit every possible show across any of the BBC radio networks.

Go on Aled put the golden hour vote to Facebook ie Allow/ Disallow pre 1990s songs.

And bring back Viaduct!

Viaduct IS one of our decisions. We DID bring it back. It bombed. And this website said it wasn't as good as it used to be!

Also don't be swayed by people who are passionate about the ins and out of our show or are passionate enough about music to go searching for music before they were born. Even if you were able to get a million people on Facebook to agree with you we have 9 million listeners and the VAST majority consume the music we play and don't go searching for it.

If we play music that's not familiar to them or they have no interest in learning about they'll just switch off. They won't go on Facebook to vote about it, they'll just tune in to the next preset on their radio. They're the silent majority that it's Radio 1's bosses (and mine) to consider - not just the vocal ones.

How annoying.Anyway, Hi Aled I hope this post finds you well.Is there any chance the team will be recording a couple of special holiday podcasts like you did a few years ago, or are Radio 1 management against that also.

They are yes lol! Although it's not Radio 1 management that are against it - it's a BBC Trust issue. Podcasts (like the newly approved mobile apps) are merely a platform to deliver content. If we want to make new content then we need to specifically ask permission for that. If we were to ask permission for that the BBC Trust would need to do a consultation and test the market to see how it would be affected if we were to make new content outside of our current Radio 1 licence.

We don't have permission for new content. Therefore the accepted time frame for replaying old content is 7 days (think iPlayer). So we can only put on a podcast material broadcast within the last 7 days. Fine for week 1 of our holidays, not for the second week or our returning week.

We're allowed a link to explain that there's no podcast but that's all.

Many thanks for the reply Aled. Totally appreciate how many parties have to be kept happy regarding show output. Theres very little wrong with the golden hour as it is so I'm only nitpicking :D Its still the best hour of UK radio every week in my book!

If its a BBC wide thing then the new running order is fair enough. I was just making the point that the old-style was so much more listener friendly and just made it easier to understand what happened and and what time.

Thanks for the reply, was it just Mark & Lard back then that broadcast outside of London or were there other shows/DJ's that used to broadcast outside of London (apart from the regions of course).

Interesting so it did bomb then, strange really as that feature (along with True Or False) were both very popular & ran for a long time, I'll be honest I wasn't a member of the board back then so didn't know it wasn't as popular second time round on here.

For me when I heard the re-introduced Viaduct, I didn't like the music used in the background myself (the Bottom end theme always sounded better to me than that hard dance track).

What I always found odd about Viaduct - The Revenge, as opposed to Viaduct 1999/2000, was that in the "Revenge" version so many callers didn't seem to "get" the feature, whereas a few years earlier contestants seemed to play along with the feature quite well.

I still think it could work today though, the audience seem a bit more intelligent now compared to 2003 ;)

So Radio 1 is leaving Great Portland Street then, interesting never knew that.

Aled, how far back does Radio 1's archive go? Are shows kept for all Dj's from way back in 1967 or are only special shows kept (such as first & last shows of a DJ, shows with live sessions, special guests, etc.)?
