Heskey was his worst buy but the team did well in the season, finishing above Everton and Liverpool. If that is what a shit manager is capable of achieving then some clubs must have serious manager problems.

Yes for the money paid Dunne was probably Villa's best player last season. I think Milner has had one decent season which was last year and Ashley Young doesn't do enough for me.

What do you want him to do for you, a lap dance?

I didn't say he hasn't bought some crap players in the past but the team still did better than most of the other teams last season.

I've never bought into the Martin O'Neil Is Wonderful chorus, although it has died down somewhat in the last three years anyway. There was a time when he was being hailed as the saviour of any club he deigned to turn his hand to, but I never understood why. At that point he'd made a difference at a couple of clubs which had been in some kind of trouble, but never really won anything significant, and as soon as the questions started he'd be up and away, usually complaining about his board and/or players. I vaguely remember a semi-retirement on health grounds, which, given that he leapt back into the game at the first decent offer seemed a bit spurious to me. He's one of those nearly-men who talks a good game I think.

Mind you, as Cat will no doubt justifiably point out, what the * do I know about the Premiership?

It wasn't his health - his wife had cancer when he left Celtic.

Great story on Five Live last night of him ringing Leicester fans who had written to him criticising him. Apparantly after they won the League Cup that night he rang them all asking whether he was a good manager now.

That was it - it was a vague memory at best.

What did they say?

Paul Scholes reminded me why I love him so tonight. Why did I take him off my fantasy team? He's so angry.
