"Chris Moyles launches on-air tirade over pay

Radio One breakfast show DJ Chris Moyles launched an on-air tirade against the BBC on Wednesday, claiming he had not been paid for two months.

"I'm very, very angry for being put into this position," he said. "I haven't been paid since the end of July and no-one cares about it."

Moyles said he had considered not coming in to work, adding: "If they're not bothered, why should I bother?"

Radio One was not immediately available to comment on the DJ's comments.

Moyles, who is Radio One's longest-serving breakfast DJ, signed a new contract with the BBC in July.

At the time, he talked about his delight at the new deal, writing on Twitter: "I might treat myself to a few drinks tonight as it's warm and the contract at work is now done. 12 more months of early starts!"

In contrast, the host spent a chunk of the early part of Wednesday morning's broadcast complaining about his pay.

"I was texting my agent last night," he said, "and I am so angry that they've put me in this position where now I have to choose whether or not I go to work."

"Fix it, just get it fixed. It's a huge lack of respect."

His producers and colleagues attempted to soothe the situation, saying they had faced similar situations previously.

But Moyles seemed unrepentant. "It's to do with our new contracts," he argued. "It's some idiot who didn't put a bit of paperwork through.

"I pretty much know who's responsible in this building. I even know the name of the moronic div.

"I bet you any money their ass is getting paid," he added.

He went on to appeal to the BBC's director general, Mark Thompson, to sort the situation out.

"What is it worth for me to carry on 'til, let's say, seven? A tenner?" he asked.

"Can you imagine if Terry Wogan had not been paid for two months, do you think that would ever happen? It just wouldn't, would it?

"Do you ever think anyone would forget to pay Chris Evans for two months and nobody would panic about it?"

'Not sorry'

The discussion of Moyles' salary lasted around 25 minutes, although it branched off into a tongue-in-cheek rant about the lack of fresh milk in the Radio One fridge.

By 0700BST, the DJ had yet to play a record, and listeners were texting in to voice their opinions.

One said: "Stop moaning, you get paid a fortune compared to most people," provoking further ire from the presenter.

"You know nothing about my life. What, because I get paid more than you, if I don't get paid for two months I should just go 'oh well, harrumph'?

"If you really have a problem with it, I'll pay your licence fee to the BBC so you can switch off and listen to something else."

"I'm not sorry for the outburst at all," he surmised, "I needed to get it out of my system otherwise I'd be angry for the rest of the show."

"Don't get me wrong, I love my job."

Moyles's agent declined to comment further but added the issue was in the process of being rectified."

That's a little unfair of them to report this - Chris hasn't played a record before 7 in months. Given that Aled doesn't moan about it any more, I'm guessing it could even be in Chris's contract now?

Wow - was it really that long? After a late news and two cheesy songs, I kind of lost track of time.

Well the Cheesy Songs weren't over before 0640, and the 0700 news wasn't particularly late - so I don't think it was that long.

Did anyone see this on Twitter from Krishnan Guru-Murthy?

just listening to chris moyles' rant this morning....its quite spectacular

i know he's brilliant but is such a direct challenge to BBC bosses hard to see how they will not look pathetically weak if they let it go
#418819
I had a feeling that as soon as he mentioned it that it would be reported.

I agree completely with Chris, it's totally disrespectful.

I also agree with Chris about the people who text in telling him to stop complaining because of how much he gets paid or that he gets a car to take him to work or that their job is harder than his. As anyone who has read Chris' books will know, he has worked hard to get to where he is and deserves it.

How much he gets paid is irrelivant, he's got bills to pay like the rest of us!

I'm also a little annoyed at some of crap journos who have wrote a few online articles on this. In the guardian they wrote "For about 30 minutes from the start of his show at 6.30am, during which no records were played, Moyles railed against BBC management, " I've seen similar lines in a few articles and it appears to me to suggest that the "songless" first half hour of the show isn't normal.

Lazy f**kin journos!

I like this description of Aled from one of the comments under the Guardian's story about it.

'Where was his producer? This isn't the first time Moyles has gone on a rant and his producer has let him do it. Whatever his issues with payroll in the BBC, it's nothing to do with the listeners and this should never have gone out on air.'

(In reply) ''his producer is probably a 25-year old on 20K a year who's terrified of losing their job. Chris Moyles is a fat old bully who could have them fired. There's no way they'd step in and tell him to shut up. The presenters have all the clout.'

I'm sure Aled wishes he was 25.

And it's good to see that the ill-informed are still using the usual sticks to beat him over the head with. Another comment reads

'Maybe the BBC heard his show and learned their definition of 'respect' from him talking about gay people, women, striking colleagues....

They must have missed the discussion about the 'Don't ask, don't tell' policy this morning. That really showed off Chris' blatant homophobia...

Im not a big fan of the radio I only listen to it at work.I only startin listenin to Chris Moyles when I changed jobs a couple of years ago and instead of the radio being on in the background I now have the headphones on as I work.

Chris` show is the best radio on bar none. Id rather listen to funny stuff than the same shite songs on repeat all day. Infact the only other bit of radio I would listen to regularly would be him Russell Brand and Ricky Gervais. The other 2 are no longer on the radio so I`d be gutted if Chris went.

He`s right to speak his mind, if anyone in any other job had this happen to them Im sure they`d do the same.

Ass kissing over.

Chris if you`re reading this, dont even think about not turning up for work!

The quoting in The Scum is as twisted as ever:

"Don't talk to me" *sigh* When Roy Walker says that it's funny. Shame it all couldn't be settled privately, but it's damn good publicity as they say (It's bringing a lot of traffic to the site). I'd hate for him to go down the DLT route, but he's gotta stand up for himself, I enjoy the rants anyway, it's just, as we all know over the years, the Moyles we hear is a different one the rest of the country does.

Of course Chris is actually doing the BBC a favour by forcing them to sort this out - as a freelance who submits an invoice for payment rather than getting paid and paying tax via PAYE, Chris is probably considered a small business and could claim interest on late payments!
#418834
A funny 30mins....fair play to him, pay the man. Nobody who has bills to pay etc would be happy to skip two months pay.

Loved it, and loved the idea of not playing a record until he got paid!

I like 6.30am rants :D

I was fuming about that spineless idiot Dave. Just when you need your best mate to give you a bit of support he goes kissin BBC ass. He was probably thinkin if Chris gets fired over this he's not takin me down with him. Coward.

Have enjoyed listening to Moyles over the past few years but am sick of hearing him rant, it's half 6 in the morning for christ sake.

I am a teacher and can you imagine being a parent and being told but your child that their teacher went on a rant at the start of the lesson about not being paid. Would be in the heads office for professional miss conduct before I could say detention!

While yes, he does a job at an agreed fee with agreed perks he needs to remember people listening may be struggling to put bread on the table, buy their child a new pair of school shoes. I bet he has more money in his bank account that I get paid this year.

Give Heart a go... can't do any harm in trying!

Saying Chris shouldn't talk about personal, private or job-related material is bloody ridiculous. That's ALL he talks about. That's THE SHOW.

I love rants, and ahem... helped to provoke one from him... that was a bit uncomfortable, but still great stuff!

The rants, the personal stuff, it's what Chris does, it's why we love him, and if you don't like it, I'm not exactly sure why you're listening. Is it for the music? :?

OR, he didn't want the rant to last the entire show. He was empathising with him as he'd been in a similar situation. Nothing wrong with that at all & the rant would've been pointless if it had gone on any longer than it did, top quality entertainment though. Hurry up & pay him.

I don't agree with that at all. He should've been paid, it doesn't matter how much he has in his account. That is besides the point on a massive scale. I get paid probably 1/3 of you on your teachers salary, does that mean that you don't mind being paid (Albeit temporarily) as there are still people worse of than you out there, money in your account or not. No, of course not.

Downloading this one now in case it gets taken down.

Fair play to Chris, if the BBC are diverting over his pay & keep sodding him around then I don't blame him for having a rant on air.

In all honesty all those wankers who have moaned about him ranting about his pay, like they would work for free at their workplace.

Just hope the BBC sort this out soon, I don't want him to do a DLT, if he does that means Mills, Dev or Grimmy on in the mornings 8O 8O 8O

Exactly he's said before it's 'The Chris Moyles Show'...people by now really should realise that the clue is in the title! People may not like that sort of radio but that's personal preference and they should find an alternative just as I don't like Heart format of a male 'deejay' with a token women at breakfast.

Did miss out a bit from my first post that said he should get the money he is owed (now correct above )

My pay has been incorrect for the past three months as I have not received money for getting to a course 300 miles away, an overnight hotel and food costs while away but that does not mean that I rant about it to the students I teach. In my First year I received £6.40 in pay one month after some * up and I didn't get it until the next pay day, should I have ranted to all the kids and parent and parents evening about it. No, it's a personal matter between me and my employer.
