anyone here been?

i'm off there next week, and i have no idea what the weather is going to be like, or the things i should be seeing.

i could research this, but i'm lazy - and prefer proper accounts of people's experiences.

I've been there it was an amazing time. I recommend the big, famous things like Empire State Building etc. Also it's good to see all the Boroughs as they are so different from each other. Also M&M world.

I went there in April/May so not sure what the weather will be like. Ellis Island was great, dont bother with the statue of liberty. The boat to ellis island takes you round it. central park brilliant. if you get a chance go and see american idiot on broadway. billy joe from greenday is actually in it at the moment!

I was there in December 1999. It was very cold.

Do - Central Park, ice skating if possible. Naff I know, but you HAVE to. Do a Statue of Liberty trip, you'll kick yourself if you don't get those pictures. Mine are amongst my most treasured photos - partly because the ones I took of Manhattan from the boat look so beautiful with the World Trade Centre towers with the sun shining on the windows. Do shopping. Clothes are a lot cheaper there, especially good label jeans. Do FAO Schwarz, the most incredible toyshop in the world. Do the Empire State Building - do it twice in fact, once in the daytime, once at night. Do walking around a lot. I was wandering around once and needed a wee, so I went and used the toilets in Trump Tower just to be indulgent. Do the Columbus Avenue flea market. Do a proper deli and get a decent sandwich - try corned beef and pickles on rye (no, its nothing like the corned beef you get here, more like pastrami). Go to Zabars, and Dean and Deluca. Go to Soho and SHOP. If you are flush, go for * at 21 Club, the famous old speakeasy on West 52nd Street, one of the most atmospheric bars ever. Again if you're flush, another taste of Old New York would be drinks at The Algonquin Hotel on West 44th Street - or better still, stay a night there.

Take many pictures and post them here please.

Concrete jungle where dreams are made of, there's nothing you can't do. The streets will make you feel brand new, big lights will inspire you.

I've never been to New York, or even anywhere in America for that matter. One day perhaps...

We were there at Easter. For a week longer than expected.....

Empire State Building is a must. Greenwich village is excellent just to walk around and people watch. We also had a brilliant day on Intrepid Sea Air and Space museum. Central Park can fill as much of your time as you like - try especially to get to Belvedere Castle. It's lovely.

One of our favourite things was a night time tour on one of the open top buses. This was mainly due to our guide who'd lived an amazing life and had grown up in Manhattan and had lots of entertaining stories to tell.

There's a really awesome place where you can get the best pickles ever. I just wandered around a lot and slept on people's floors. Good times.

Didn't the cathedral burn down in York? Is this what they have done to "renew" it?

I'd actually reccomend doing "Top of the Rock" rather than the Empire State as the only thing you can't see from there is the Empire State Building itself! The view is just as good and it's cheaper.

Check the times of the late night shows at the Planetarium at the Natural History Museum. We saw a brilliant show there with Moby inspired music when we were over there last year.

Other than that, walk the Brooklyn Bridge. Some cracking views from there, and gets you a bit of exercise and fresh air! We actually got to do it after a tour of Brooklyn on one of the Red Line bus tours. They dropped a few of us off before heading back over to Manhattan.
