The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Just remembered that it's 6 years to the day that the legend that was John Peel passed away. What he didi for the popularity of Radio 1 and teh new music he played can not be underestimated. I say that because Radio 1 in it's wisdom has decided to do NOTHING to remember him. I thought they would probably put a documentary out about him during the stories on a monday (today). Instead there is some garbage about what happened to ex-Xfactor contestents with Scott Mills!!

I just wanted to show my disguist with Radio 1 for not showing and signs of rememberance for a true legend of radio in this country.

OK so then every DJ who has ever died and been on Radio 1 should be remembered I can imagine the powers that be saying. But peel was something special. Nearly all of his listeners can relate to the music he played and he was and always will be a legend.

Rest in peace John

I agree with all of the above if I'm honest. In the first couple of years after John died, didn't they have "John Peel Day" on Radio 1 and across the BBC - showcasing new bands and talent you might not have heard of. I see that's been quietly dropped in recent times, despite the fact that when they launched it they were hoping it would be a day celebrated for years to come. It's pretty pathetic that it seems to have been forgotten about so soon.

Even John's slot is unrecognisable from what it was. The aim was to create a similar sort of show with someone as passionate as him for music, and at first it was a success with Colin Murray - it was like John Peel refreshed for a new century. I'm not saying he knew as much as John, but that would have come with time, and if you ever listened to him he wasn't exactly a thicko. When Colin left, Huw Stevens should have replaced him to try and continue that tradition, but instead we get Grimmy who basically has a daytime show with a different playlist and that is a crying shame to the memory of John and shame on Radio 1 in general for letting both of the above get this way. For all the flack they get, they do a great job most of the time, but they have gotten it so very wrong here.

As an aside - is 6 Music marking the anniversary in anyway - it's no excuse for R1 slacking off, but it seems more a Peel-kinda-place nowadays. Can't see anything on the wesbite, but I know his son presents a show on Fridays and is quite good by all accounts (and sounds scarily like his dad!)

I am sad that I was too young to listen to any of his shows when he was on air. He sounded like a very influential man and something about him again on Radio 1 would've been nice; I can't stand X Factor.

I was too young as well but just listening to a few clips on youtube and just generally on the internet gave me a flavour of the passion the man had for good music. By all accounts he was one of the most popular Dj's on Radio 1 and could possibly be considered as the most popular and influencial when it came to music. Like I said before I find it disguisting that Radio 1 cannot spare an hour out of their poor schedule past 9pm to pay homage to a great man and musical legend. I mean who cares about what happened to some deluded wannabes who were rubbish on a "talent" show some years back!! I could imaging this being on a Radio station with close link to ITV etc but not on one that is meant to remain impartial and free from media influences. Who actually cares??

Again I agree. One of the biggest mistakes radio 1 made behind Cotton and Yates was to hire Grimmy. There again he appeals to the auidence range that radio 1 want but great radio isn't about meeting demographics. Great radio is meant to be entertainihg and a must for all the fans of a show. This is what John gave to Radio. People wanted to listen to his show. It built a bridge between all genres of music and age ranges of people. Colin was a great in that slot- ok he was never going to be John Peel no matter how long he was in the job but he was one of the closest people radio 1 could have had. Equally, I really enjoy Huw's shows whether they be covering for GJ or JW etc or just his shows oh their own. He really shows the passion that a great music DJ needs to have.

Really, what radio 1 needs is someone with the "youth" and "popularity" or Grimmy, the appeal and sharp mindedness of Colin Murray and the passion for music of Huw or to a lesser extent Zane. They would then have the perfect DJ to fit into the evening slot that just seems to me anyway, to be boring, dull and not worth the time listening to.

I can't see anything on there either but I ask myself why shoould they have to. Peel was radio 1 royalty and should have been celebrated on there. Granted had 6Music sone something I have no doubts that it would make for great listening but Radio 1 shouldn't rely on others to do what they should.

Sorry for my rant but I really think Radio 1 needs to get its act together at times like this.

As great as it would be if they did do something to remember him, surely that would be more likely to happen on one of the key anniversaries (the next will be 10 years). They'd run out of ideas if they marked it every year.

The thing is John Peel day was an idea that could run and run. Nobody is saying the all of Radio 1's daytime DJs should sit mourning him for 12 hours solid every year, but the day of celebration was to be a series of live gigs over the day showcasing new talent - you don't need new ideas every year, just keep doing the same idea well. It's not Comic Relief.

That's fair enough. I guess if you can have a sodding "Gaming Week" every year then you can certainly have a live music-based Peel Day. Good idea.

Live music would be good, but they wouldn't even need to do that - they could just have a day of playing unsigned bands.

Don't get me started on their so-called "gaming week". This is coming from a guy who loves his video games but who in Radio 1 plays games on a regular basis. If you can give me 5 people, I'll eat a hat!

I listen to Colin Murray on Friday nights on Radio Ulster and wholeheartedly enjoy that show since he plays music from some bands and artists I haven't heard of but seem cool. The Nationals is one example and got their latest album because of Colin. If John Peel was like that, I would have very much enjoyed him as well.

Heh, I find it stupid as well. I like video games as well but I really don't see the point of the whole thing. It didn't really have anything fresh from last year. But this is going away from the actual subject of this thread (John).
