i'm a budding young radio deejay.
today i sent some demos out.
Tolworth's own Radio Jackie told me "sorry but you're just too Chris Moyles-esque"

surely this is a compliment, no? -sighh- :(

Perhaps they meant you're not bland, boring & corporate enough for them, this seems to be the trend for most DJ's these days now instead of having some sort of personality sadly.

If you're too 'Moyleslike', you must be a funny/great presenter right?

Sorry, but another Chris Moyles is something most stations aren't looking for. It's very unlikely anyone would hire you if you sounded similar to Moyles style. I know that may sound harsh and unfair, but that's the truth, commercial radio looks for people who shut up and play the hits.

Chris also has mastered the art of making it sound like presenting a radio show is really easy, when in reality it's not. What may sound like a chat between friends that's made up as it goes along will all be planned out. Sadly loads of wannabe presenters don't realise this and think it's quite easy to make something that sounds as good as Chris. If it were that easy everyone would be doing it.

My advice. Listen to the station you are sending the demo to and taylor your demo to match that stations style. It may mean a different demo for every station and therefore more work, but it is more likely to land you a gig. Stations know their own style and are not going to hire anyone who can't do it.

My two cents.

Yeah but this was never a problem until about 5-10 years ago when all the local radio stations all suddenly merged together, Kenny Everett, Chris Tarrant, Steve Wright, Jon Holmes, Mark Radcliffe & Stuart Maconie, Simon Mayo, Geoff Lloyd, Pat Sharp & Terry Wogan, for example were all chatty, hell all barring Sharp (from what I know) had teams on air that had a chat & friend like banter between each other.

Sure it's not easy but it makes for a more entertaining radio show than the bland "that was a great song but blah blah & now anothe great song by blah blah", they're all just so dull.

Oh I totally agree with you Johnny, and I fear for the future of radio in the UK because there is no where for the next Chris Moyles to get his break.

If Chris was trying to climb the ladder these days he wouldn't succeed.

My response above is the only way the OP will even stand a chance of ever getting hired in radio. And I say this as someone who has sat through meetings where bosses have been critiquing people who have sent in demo tapes.

I love radio. Its, in my opinion, the greatest broadcasting medium there is.
but there is no way i'm going to become a mindless copycat Smooth Radio DJ.

it'll be harder for someone like me to get a radio gig, but just because its hard doesnt mean its not doable :)

i still think Moyles-esque is such a lazy critique. Oh because i'm a bit loud and boisterous im suddenly a Moyles clone? PAH! and PAH! again :)

I agree, I don't know what it is with these radio bosses these days, I mean if I wanted all music & no talk I'd listen to my ipod instead.

As a kid I love Capital FM throughout the late 80's & the whole of the 90's, it was a great station, every DJ had something to give & they all played a variety of tracks on air. It's such a disappointment listening to Capital FM these days to hear how bland & dull it's got over the last 5-6 years, Chris Tarrant leaving was the final nail in the coffin for me, yes he did talk over songs at times but he was never dull & he used to stray from the playlist often. Now I can't tell the difference from one Capital FM DJ to another, it's bad it really is.

This is why I like the variety of DJ's on Radio 2 & 6 Music, I may not like them all but they do at least do different things on each & every show, although 6 Music's, ahem, music appeals to me more than Radio 2.

I agree with you in everything you say. But if you want to get into radio in the traditional route then your not going to do it if they think you sound like Chris Moyles... sorry.

Your probably more likely to get a personality gig in radio if you try becoming a tv presenter first.

Or student radio...?
