Why does the golden hour never go into the 80's or even 70's? Obviously radio 1 has a young target audience but i would love to hear older songs on the golden hour and I'm 17 and it is only half an hour a week when most of the target audience is at school or college anyway. Is radio 1 seriously targeting the younger generation so much that anyone of the older generation could maybe feel left out?

And when is the last Chris Moyles show before Christmas? Fri 17th?

There's no pre-record Christmas Show, our last show (randomly) will be Thursday the 23rd of December.

There is no right or wrong answer to the subject of music played during the Golden Hour. There are younger people who'd love to hear music from before their years, there are those that feel that 'Golden' songs are from their era of growing up (so for a 20 - 30 year old that would be late 90's to the last few years) and there are other - like me who get more excited by more recent stuff.

Everyone has an opinion, the ones that we've had to go with are of those of the bosses who prefer a Golden Hour that will include songs that our audience would have heard as they were growing up who might tune out if they heard songs they didn't know.

I know Chris would like to go older.

Hi Aled. As most of the interviews are now recorded is there any way the whole interview, or even extended highlights, can be added to the website rather than a one or two minute clip? Today I would have loved to have watched the whole of the Will Ferrell interview, but had to make do with 1min 20 secs :(

I am sure there is a reason for this, but I feel like I am missing out!

Hmm. Intersting. I'll look into why we do this and let you know.

There'e a huge difference between a spelling mistake and a typo though. You clearly can't tell one from the other.

Hi Aled,

I have a question about the Radio 1 Playlist. Why is it that, the license payers don't get any input into what goes on the playlist? There have been loads of times when a really popular song has missed out on the Playlists for whatever reason, and then others when an absolutely abysmal song has been selected and gets slated, not just by the listeners but by the DJs.

I'm sure a lot of work goes into the process, but I'm surprised that we don't get any input at all, especially when it's the majority of the music played on Radio 1 all day.

Thanks. Also, hope you're feeling a lot better,
Rich

Well, no because some songs aren't even released yet and are put on the playlist and are hated, and some aren't put on and are great when they're released. Most of the time, the playlist is great, but why don't the people listening and paying for it, have a say in what they're going to be listening to all week?

Tbh i think the playlist does usually cover a wide range of music and i dont think many good songs get missed out of it but tbh how do you expect them to give us a choice? Would that not be really hard to coordinate?

Hey Rich

This is a very tricky one - I can't speak for the playlist - there is a Music Team at Radio 1 and a head (George) who should be the people who answer questions on the playlist - and they would frown upon me thinking I have the right to speak on their behalf. I don't.

So these are my thoughts, and I may not be 100% right because I am a radio producer who's opinions are asked for as part of playlist - I don't run it.

There are truly many factors to consider when looking at songs for playlist. Honestly. Some factors include what Radio 1 is there for - to break new music, to champion new British music, to provide an alternative to commercial radio playlists, to play songs that a 15 - 30 audience would be interested in and would want to hear, sometimes to honour a core Radio 1 act when bringing a new project back, sometimes because Radio 1 specialist is championing a song, or band, sometimes because there is great interest from the daytime shows that an artist is played etc.

It's difficult to allow the public to have a greater role in the playlist because no matter what system you look at (and a lot have) there isn't a perfect one. Most come down to a popularity contest (aka the Official Chart) or would be open to abusive by social network driven lobbying by fan bases (again favouring the biggest rather than the new).

If we select a handful then that's no different really to the 10 producers and 4 music team who sit in playlist - at least these guys are paid to try to be as knowledgeable and unbiased as possible.

We use analysis of social networking about artists, YouTube, MySpace hits, we have a panel of listeners that test new, current and recurrent songs and we use text and email feedback directed at the shows.

So we do try our best to be as inclusive of the audience as possible.

Do you have any other ideas on how we could include the audience more?

I think you'll find a day very soon that once you hear a song on the radio you'll be able to buy it legally - if you have the money!
