I can only imagine how many thousands if not millions of text the show gets each day.

How does it all work. Sometimes on webcam you can see Chris reading texts from a sheet and sometimes he and the team read off screens.

So really my question is, how does a text go from arriving on the system to being read out on air!

(I coundn't have put that more geekily really!!)

Have a wondeful Christmas and a Happy New Year :)

You're all amazing

Happy Christmas!

We have a web page which displays all the texts. It's a clever piece of software that shows an 'inbox' which is made up of SMS, MMS, e-mails, instant messaging and messages from the mobile site. Only SMS, MMS and the mobile site messages have been switched on though.

We get around 5,000 SMS to the show each day if we don't particularly ask for them. Last Thursday, with a lot of pushing it got to 60k.

BTW, while we're on the subject - we don't make any money from SMSs but because of the shortcode nature of them they do cost 10-15p which really bugs me. The messages from the mobile site come up in the same stream of texts as they would if they came from your mobile as SMS so I highly recommend you always send in your message from a smartphone using the Radio 1 mobile webapp.

As you mentioned the Web App I was trying to send a message from the web on my phone the other day and I wrote it with my name and location and it said Error: Please make sure you include your name and location.

Also why can't the BBC just let us text to 03700 100 100 as that would be free or just set up another 03 number up for texts?

On Nokia by any chance? I got the same.

The primary purpose of Chris' show is to entertain the nation. The primary purpose people like Greg/Fearne are on is to play music. For example, you don't listen specially to Chris' show for the music. You listen to it for humour/talking.

Plus, all to often, Chris isn't too keen on the music on the playlist, so with the above, and the fact he often isn't keen on the playlist, is why I think he doesn't pick a record of the week. Maybe Aled can back me up on this/give the actual reason?

Heh, that would be really cool just to compare. I doubt they are that accurate though.

Yeah i know and i doubt they would factor in things like iplayer either but they would still be interesting to know

I think iPlayer figures by region would be hard to measure on IP addresses or something like that alone, as even though I'm in Loughborough my IP points to a number of different places. They're not entirely accurate.

Yes, it will do if it's Google Chrome. Try the 'My Location' feature on Google Maps (the circle icon above the zoom controls).

It's pretty good (and scary), but I doubt the BBC would ever use it for statistics, you still have to put your post code in everywhere on the site. It's still pretty new though, so maybe it'll be used for better purposes in the future.

Okay, question:

Hi Aled :), how often do Twitter mentions to the Radio 1 and the Chris Moyles Show account get checked during the show? It'd be a really easy way to talk to the studio, plus with hashtags and trends etc. it'd be much more dynamic if it was integrated with the text system or something. Though, it may be a bit overkill...!

There is a central dept that works on strategy and figures and stuff. I befriended someone there to get the handful of facts we used on the show the other day - the figures aren't that easily accessible so although I'm sure that there IS a way of getting smaller stats I don't have access to it.

Twitter = A BBC minefield.

Twitter has taken up 90% of my social-media conversations within the building over the last year. Way way too many issues to bore you with here - but questions like who owns the account? And who's Twitter should be pushed on Radio 1 gets a lot of people's arguing time here. e.g. during the show should it be Chris' Twitter? The Show's Twitter or Radio 1's Twitter? and who 'owns' the account we decide to use is a hot one.

Our text console has the ability to collect Twitter mentions and the latest word on that is that I've asked that we incorporate our Show Twitter into it. The people that I've asked though would much prefer Radio 1's twitter account there.
