It's great to hear people avoiding bread (no good can come of it) however if you have factory made soups instead they still have wheat, the devil, flour added. so although you can't see the bread its the same as having a soup with croutons in.

http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/groceries/s ... 6037559133

Ingredients
Water; Onion; Potato; Chicken (6%); Desiccated Coconut (5%); Red Pepper; Wheat Flour; Cornflour; Sugar; Coriander; Lime Juice; Garlic Purée; Lemon Grass (0.5%); Salt; Ginger Purée; Coriander Powder; Lime Leaf (0.2%); White Pepper; Dried Chilli Flakes; Turmeric Powder.

I haven't eaten bread since the 90's.

I know very well that white flour's bad for you (simple carbs) but I still love bread. I gave it up once for Lent and I try not to buy it too often, but it's not easy. That said, Tesco's bread is always stale. I bought some rolls from M&S the other nite (a special treat as I can't really afford to shop there) and they were so lovely and soft! I think I'd forgotten what fresh bread tasted like.

There's bread and bread. Most bread you get these days tastes of nothing. Good bread on the other hand is heaven - but not eating it is one of the best things you can do for your body. Hence the state of my body.

All simple carbs - white bread, pasta, rice etc - are bad for you. They give you a rush of energy which quickly drops again, leaving you hungry and tired. Thus you just eat more. Complex carbs - wholemeal bread and pasta, porridge - are much better.

Rubbish! Its not bad for you, and anyway, the human body is designed to eat little and often, so surely white bread is good for you!

Oh. Shit. May try a week off myself then, see what 'appens. Although thinking about it, that may be harder than it sounds......

DD - the human body is indeed designed to eat little and often, but a) that was back in the day when people only ate things that they had killed or grown in the ground anyway, not over-processed foods like bread and b) it doesn't fit in with most people's routines these days - eating something that will cause your blood sugar to spike and then drop an hour later is clearly counter-productive if you've gotta spend 4hrs in the office (or factory or wherever) before you can eat again. I wouldn't say it if it were rubbish - I am far from perfect in my eating habits, but I know a fair bit about this stuff.

Tim - it's worth a try just to see how you feel. A lot of people have problems digesting bread, so you might see a benefit (I'm very prone to indigestion so I do). If you don't, no harm done.

Alright then, if we're gonna get into this, a couple of articles to back up my assertions about white bread and other refined starches (I did say simple carbs earlier when the correct word is really refined, but the point remains the same):

http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/focus/nutrit ... drates.htm

http://diet.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Complex_Carbs

Again, I'm not saying giving up bread completely (especially wholegrain bread) is a cure-all, especially considering that everyone is different, but I know bread affects my digestive system, so it's worth experimenting with these things.

DD, can you quote your sources?

Its not rubbish, its biochemically and physiologically demonstrable that white bread doesn't do anybody any actual good, and does do a surprising number of people harm - often without them realising it. I don't think that in and of itself is really a problem, a lot of lovely things are nutritionally undesirable but that doesn't mean we shouldn't ever eat them. The reason white bread is a problem for so many people is that it ISN'T eaten as an occasional treat, its regarded as a staple part of the diet - and anything with the fibre and vitamins so ruthlessly removed from it can never be that.

Wholemeal bread on the other hand is better, although you have to be careful. "Brown" bread isn't necessarily wholemeal - a lot of granary and multi-seed loaves are basically white bread with colouring and a few seeds or grains added, which makes very little difference to their nutritional value. Wholemeal is better though, if you're going to eat bread every day - and personally, I'm pretty much going to eat bread every day!

I'm not saying white bread is good. I'm saying that cutting out bread is rubbish! I eat a well ballanced diet and I am healthy. I have nothing to back up my sources as my sources are me being fit and healthy. Everything on moderation blah blah blah. You're all talking rubbish

Well then, my source is that I'm not fit and healthy. Eating stodge (ie carbs) gives me severe, painful acid reflux - I have prescription medication for it. Generally, I'm better off without bread in any quantity, which probably includes what other people would consider 'moderation'. Once again, my point - everyone is different.

No we're not, but neither are you. Well not completely. Fact is the bread you eat isn't doing you any good. What would appear to also be fact is that it isn't doing you any harm - which makes you a lucky, lucky, lucky duck! Refined carbohydrates, especially wheat products, cause a significant proportion of people digestive problems which can present as anything from mild bloating to crohns disease - at the milder end of that scale people often don't realise the wheat is the problem until they stop eating it, that's why a lot of people give cutting bread out a go - just to see if it helps.

Yeah, that's the essence of what I was trying to say. I'm tired and my hip aches, which is in no way connected to eating bread.

Healthy is all relative though isn’t it. People are healthy until the day they are not.

It is a fact that wheat is not good for the body and it's a fairly modern thing to eat wheat in the quantities we do.

Sat and today are up
