Really? I was tempted to point out that Hindus have nothing to do with Buddhists. Although I suppose you could argue that The Buddha started out as a Hindu...

Why would the relationship between the Hindus and the Buddhists make any difference to anything?

I think what he's trying to say is this:

the expectation would be that the Hindu would be expecting his own 'God' figure to appear and that would explain him saying"I can't believe it's not Buddha". But Hindus don't worship Buddha, so why would the Hindu expect it to be Buddha, or be surprised that it wasn't?

Does that make sense...?

I think "I cant believe its not Krishna" wouldnt work.

I will change it to

A priest & a Tibetan Monk are making some toast, suddenly the priests says, 'look, I can see an image of Jesus in my margerine!'
The Tibetan Monk says, 'I can't believe it's not Buddha'
