Yes, cos if you're unfortunate enough to be single and want to spend an evening that just happens to be Valentine's Day hanging out with a friend that must be "tinged with pitty [sic]". C'mon Tim, stop being such a smug married.

I'm not married, and due to shift patterns will not even be seeing my partner tonight....

But that has no bearing at all on how I felt earlier when listening to Chris this morning! I thought it was a crying shame and felt sorry for Chris. He was not portraying it as 'spending a night with a mate which just so happens to be on valentines day'. Sorry Nic, I know much pleasure can come from being single, but this was not how Chris treated the subject and not how I felt for him.

I'm going to enjoy valentines day at college as a 'singleton' laughing at people who are trying to be romantic with their other halves.

the whole day is a load of twaddle. pish-poor excuse to get mugs spending money. I love my missus, and she knows I do. We make a point of doing things together as often as the kids/bank balance will allow, but the whole panic and overkill surrounding Feb 14th is waaaaay OTT. Someone I work with was nearly in tears this morning as she hadn't got any flowers.....! What the.......?!

I know you're not actually married, but the end result is basically the same...

I thought he was just playing up the situation for comedy effect. I don't believe for a second that he's genuinely upset at being single.

Yeah, I got her 6 red roses on Saturday (£6 supermarket ones - not that £50,000 interflora shizzle) and we shared a bottle of sparkly on Saturday night, thats all....

Oh, and of course the ultimate treat for a girl, I slipped it up the poo-chute.*

*not true.

* Valentine's Day. I'm getting married in July, that rather renders today irrelevant. I shall be no more or no less romantic than usual thanks very much. Take that society!

I imagine he'll be missing Sophie. But that's not the same as wanting to be in a new relationship. Remember he said that he and Andi had arranged this evening without either of them realising the date - they didn't go "oh no, we're both so sad and single, shall we get together on Valentine's day and share our woe?"

Oh I agree Nic, it was not planned that way. but I think once the date had hit home for Chris he could easily provide a list of preferred company for this evening....

Ha ha, me too! I could name several people who I'd rather spend the evening with than my TV. But that's the price you pay for not wanting to be in a relationship. Besides which they're all with their own wives tonight :D

This doesn't happen too often, but today I completely agree with Tim. The kind of relationships which prioritise a single, arbitrary day are not for me.

I third or fourth or fifth that it is overrated. We don't do chocolates, champagne - she doesn't drink alcohol and I don't like champagne - and what we have done for the last 10 years is make each other a valentine that is an art project. This year I have been making a mobile made out of three hearts, each connected one above the other by red wire to small fishing swivels that rotate 360 degrees. The top heart is connected to an aluminum computer silver, heat sink that is connected to the wall. This is one of the better projects I have made over the years. We won't exchange them till tonight, so I don't know what I will get just yet.

It seems to be cool to go against it now. I don't see the harm in it - if you don't want to do anything then don't some people just see it as an excuse to do something nice.

Me and Mrs Palm will have a lovely evening.
