Can't believe it, Open Access 3 finally closed on Sky Digital the other week.

I think he means safe areas.

Yep, the Sky channels as well as BBC Three and BBC Four have done this. Basically, if you have one of those old 4:3 tellys, and you choose the option on your digital set top box to zoom the picture in, they used to place the DOG (logo of the channel in the top right or left of the screen) in the 4:3 area so people on the zoom setting could still see the logo.

However, seeing as more and more people now have widescreen, more and more broadcasters are now moving their DOGs to the 14:9 safe area, so it doesn't look as annoying because it's not sort of in the middle of the screen as before.

This doesn't matter on HD because everything in HD is always in widescreen anyway.

Ha, I wouldn't call myself a geek, as I'm not excellent at maths (was predicted a C in my GCSEs) but I'm very much interested in technology and just know about these things. Lol, thanks. :)

Exactly don't see why it's seen as bad thing by the OP...hopefully post switchover this will be the case more and more and we might (for example) be able to get the 16:9 graphics feed for Formula 1 instead of the 4:3 safe one the BBC take at the moment!!

Geeks are not necessarily good at maths... I'm awful and I would call myself a geek. You just need a subject (or some subjects) to be geeky about.
