The Jam - A Town Called Malice

Where To Find It:

The Jam's Greatest Hits - Album Released 1991 (Song released 1982)

This is a personal choice of album as I would recommend it to new fans who might have heard of it for the first time like Aled today. The Jam was made up of Paul Weller, Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler. This was released in their final year together as Foxton and Weller went on to form the Style Council.

Bizarre Inc, Playing With Knives

Tedious Facts:

Formed in the Stafford area, Bizarre Inc. made an immediate impact with this 1991 debut single, a massive club hit which topped the UK dance charts; X-Static, Plutonic and Raise Me followed prior to the release of their 1992 debut LP Energique. You can get Playing With Knives on the compilation that Chris used which was Back to the Old Skool.

Today's Tedious Link:

Vanilla Ice, Ice Ice Baby

Tedious Facts:

Come on now, dont knock it, its a good tune. Taken from the hugely popular (at the time I must add) To The Extreme album from 1990. Ice's career was a one hit wonder in the UK and his burnout culminated in making programmes for Granada Men & Motors at the end of the decade. Celebrity Boxing beckoned in the US and was soundly beaten by Willis from Diff'rent Strokes.

Madonna, Like A Prayer

Tedious Facts:

There is no denying that Madonna is the most influential female artist. Q would tell you its PJ Harvey, my arse. The cut was her notorious Like A Prayer which hit number 1 in 1989. The video sparked controversy & complaints from the Catholic Church. You will find this along with her 80's classics on her first best of Immaculate Collection which you can get special offer at the moment at 7:99 at selected high street stores.

Black Box, Ride On Time

Tedious Facts:

This was the biggest selling song of 1989. They were also the only chart act from Italy to have 3 top 10 hits in the UK. This track sampled an old vocal whilst they got a French Model to mime it on stage. You can find it on what I bought last weekend: The Very Best Euphoric Old Skool Breakdown.

This track remains a watershed in the history of sampling, heralding its gradual absorption from hip hop into dance music and ultimately the pop mainstream. The 1987 record was the brainchild of 4AD chief Ivo Watts-Russell, who assembled M/A/R/R/S' line-up from the ranks of label acts Colourbox and AR Kane.
