Today's Tedious Link:

The Charlatans and North Country Boy

Today's Transcript:

A Tribe Called Quest Can I Kick It? - The first voice you hear on the start of Can I Kick It? is that of Mr Pete Tong - Pete Tong is the only man who can officially start the weekend - The weekend in this country consists of the days Saturday and Sunday, thus proving my theory that the first day of the week is Monday, fact - If you add “Manic” to the front of Monday you get “Manic Monday”, which was a big hit for The Bangles and preceded their follow-up hit “Walk Like An Egyptian” - The most famous Egyptian after Tutankhamun and Cleopatra is probably Mohammed Al Fayed, who owns Fulham - Fulham play their home matches at the newly redeveloped Craven Cottage - “Cottage” is a word associated with cheese - Cheese is a product which should be avoided or treated with great care by those suffering from a dairy allergy - Other well known allergies include nut and pollen, with the latter being responsible for the condition we know as hayfever - Hayfever can make your eyes water, as can onions - Onions are grown in the ground and can be red or white, a bit like wine - Wine is made from grapes, which like all fresh fruit and vegetables, are good for a healthy diet and the prevention of nasty things like scurvy and tuberculosis - Tuberculosis is referred to in medical circles by the abbreviation “TB”, which is also the initials of Tim Burgess from The Charlatans - Which links us to The Charlatans and North Country Boy.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Some quibbles today on the text messages:
*Cleopatra is Greek (she in fact isn’t cos I’ve checked - Dave was right).
*Fresh fruit and vegetables are part of a balanced healthy diet, and not specifically marked out as essential for the prevention of scurvy and TB. Fact.

TRACK INFO: - Released April 1997
- Got to number four and spent six weeks on the chart.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - As stated below, this track was taken from their impressive comeback album “Tellin' Stories”. It should have been a triumphant period for the band, but tragedy struck midway through its recording, when keyboardist Rob Collins was killed in a car accident.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - “Tellin' Stories”, the bands fifth (and second number one) album, was released shortly after this single back in May 1997.

Urban Cookie Collective and The Key The Secret

Today's Transcript:

The Charlatans North Country Boy - Charlatans are the sort of people who might use crystal balls - Balls are an important thing to take with you for a game of tennis - Tennis is the sport of choice for musical legend Sir Cliff Richard - Sir Cliff Richard shares the same surname as actress Wendy Richard, who plays EastEnders’ Pauline Fowler - Pauline Fowler’s late husband was called Arthur, and was played by actor Bill Treacher, who in real life is a celebrity fan of Ipswich Town FC - Ipswich have once again failed in the play offs, having been knocked out on Wednesday night by West Ham - West Ham play their home matches at Upton Park in London, which will also stage Sundays much anticipated Soccer Six tournament, go online for all the details.. <A HREF="http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1">bbc.co.uk/radio1</A> - Won (MC - hmm tenuous) is the opposite of lost, while lost is also the opposite of found - If you add the letters R and Y to the end of “found” you get “foundry”, which is somewhere you might make steel bars - “Steel Bars” was a 92 hit for Michael Bolton - Bolton is the home town of Vernon Kay and Sara Cox - * need to be combined with chickens in the world of farming - and if you had an inner city farm that was run as a collective, and in addition to keeping chickens also produced American style cuckoos for the discerning residents of this urban area, who demanded the best and fully understood the key and secret to a good biscuit, you’d probably refer to it as being an “urban cookie collective” - Which links us to Urban Cookie Collective and The Key The Secret.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - A bit of a * issue today (good mornin):
** need to be combined with hens, not chickens apparently. Dave got confused and asked for an explanation of the whole situation, but Chris couldn’t be arsed. He told Dave to just ask Aled about *... dunno why. (ber-dum-tish).

TRACK INFO: - Released July 1993 & January 2005
- Got to number 2 and spent 16 weeks on the chart originally, with January’s remixed “The Key The Secret 2005” peaking at number 31.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - The Urban Cookie Collective were a Mancunian dance act comprising of vocalist Diane Charlemagne, keyboard player Rohan Heath, MC Marty (no relation) and the exotically named DJ Pete. Amazing, as DJ Sammy might say. Hmm.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - Available on 2001’s “Back To The Old Skool” compilation double CD, alongside other hits from Strike, The Prodigy, Snap etc..

The Stone Roses and Fool's Gold

Today's Transcript:

Urban Cookie Collective The Key The Secret - The Key The Secret reached number 2 in 1993, the same year that “Informer” acheived the same chart position for the rapper Snow - Snow in the world of weather tends to be more prevalent during the winter - “Winter” rhymes with “splinter”, which is something you might get in your foot - Foot first name Michael is a well known politican and former leader of the Labour Party - If you remove the P from party and replace it with a C you get “Carty”, as in Todd Carty who played Mark Fowler in EastEnders - EastEnders is set in East London, which was also the location of yesterdays Radio 1 Soccer Six tournament at West Ham, where we were sadly beaten 3-2 in the final by Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden were traditionally led by diminutive frontman Bruce Dickinson, who enjoys fencing and flying planes, for he is a pilot - Pilot first name Ponchus was a character in the bible who was nasty to Jesus - Jesus was born in a manger and was visited by three wise men, who arrived bearing gifts including frankincense, myrrh and gold - and if you add the word “fool’s” to the front of gold, you get “Fool’s Gold’, the title of a classic record by the mighty Stone Roses - Which links us to the Stone Roses and Fool's Gold.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Just the one flaw today (aside from Daves post link ramblings about Ponchus Pilot, helicopters, Bethlehem and other religious guff):
*Paul DiAnno traditionally led Iron Maiden, before Bruce Dickinson joined for “The Number Of The Beast” album in April 1982.

TRACK INFO: - Released September 1989
- This timeless musical gem was released originally as the B-Side to “What The World Is Waiting For” back in November 1989, spending 19 weeks on the chart and getting to number 8.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - One of the most memorable Baggy songs, Mani's nagging bass is one of the most archetypal basslines ever, meanwhile John Squire goes mental with his wah-wah pedal (whatever one of those is) creating one of the most atmospheric, spooky and unstoppable tunes ever. Hmm all my own work that mini-review as you can tell...
- ALBUM DETAILS: - From the best British album of all time (as voted for last year by The Observer Music Monthly Magazine), The Roses’s self titled May 89 debut “The Stone Roses” - which shockingly only got to number 19 in the album chart.

Appleton and Fantasy

Today's Transcript:

Stone Roses Fool's Gold - The Stone Roses were fronted by Ian Brown, who was responsible for one of my favourite records of all time “F.E.A.R” - F.E.A.R spells “fear”, which is what you would be feeling if you were swimming and came face to face with a great white shark - The great white shark is a ferocious killer with rows and rows of razor sharp teeth - Teeth are found in all meat eating creatures, where their job is to cut and chew - “Choo! Choo!” is a noise you would associate with a steam train - The plural of train is trains, which run on tracks - “Tracks Of My Tears” was a top 20 hit in 1993 for Go West - “Go west” is what many of the early pioneers did when they first arrived in America, and decided to ride off on a horse and stake their claim to a plot of land by putting a flag in it, like Tom Cruise did in the film “Far and Away” - “Away in a manger” is a Christmas carol which you might sing in church - Church first name Charlotte has a new single called “Crazy Chick”, taken from her album “Issues and Tissues” - Tissues are an essential purchase if you’ve got a cold - Coldplay are fronted by Chris Martin, who along with his partner Gwyneth Paltrow, has a little baby called Apple - and if you add the letters T, O and N to the end of Apple you get "Appleton" - Which links us to Appleton and a surprise pop fancy, Fantasy.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Seamless I presume. There was no interrogation of the link this morning, as Chris and Dave were still recovering from meeting one of their TV idols, Mr James Best, aka Rosco P. Coltrane, less than ten minutes before.
TRACK INFO: - Released September 2002
- The Appletons debut single that got to number 2, spending 10 weeks on the singles chart.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Chris has a soft spot for the Appletons... aiii. Thats all folks.
Image
- ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from the critically acclaimed “Everything's Eventual”, a top 9 hit back in March 2003. Only spawned 3 singles sadly too - Fantasy, Don’t Worry and Everything's Eventually.

Neneh Cherry and Buffalo Stance

Today's Transcript:

Appleton Fantasy - If you add “island” to Fantasy you get “Fantasy Island”, which starred Ricardo Montalban as Mr. Roarke - Mr. Roarke shares the same surname as Mickey Rourke, who stars in the new movie Sin City alongside Brittany Murphy, who in turn shares the same surname as Tommy Murphy - Tommy Murphy is a character played by this morning’s special guest, Mr James Nesbitt - James Nesbitt used to be in Cold Feet - Cold feet is what you get if you don’t wear socks - Socks are sold in pairs, as are gloves and ear muffs - If you remove the S from muffs and replace it with an I and an N you get “muffin”, which is the name of a famous mule - Mules are related to donkeys, which are a common sight on the beach in Blackpool, while “Blackpool” is the name of a drama series starring Sarah Parish out of Cutting It and actor David Morrissey - David Morrissey shares the same surname as Neil Morrissey, who’s mates with Leslie Ash - Ash is a type of tree - Trees perform photosynthesis, as does grass, which is then eaten by cows, which make milk and cheese - Cheese comes in different flavours such as edam, cheddar and mozzarella - and mozzarella is the only cheese in the world to be associated with buffalos - Which links us to Neneh Cherry and Buffalo Stance.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Yep, as usual:
*Mickey Rourke only shares the same surname as Mr. Roarke phonetically, which Dave failed to mention.
*Cows yes technically don’t make cheese, although Dave insisted that they are the first part of “the cheese process”. Cue a discussion with James Nesbitt about cheese, tomatoes, olives etc...

TRACK INFO: - Released December 1988
- Neneh’s debut single, which went top 3 and spent 13 weeks on the UK singles chart.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Neneh Cherry (born Sweden, brought up New York) is of course the sister of Eage-Eye Cherry, the stepdaughter of jazz trumpeter Don Cherry and the winner of “Best International Newcomer” at the 1990 Brits.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - Lifted from Neneh’s debut release “Raw Like Sushi”, a top 2 smash back in June 1989.. which spent 43 weeks on the UK Album Chart.

Feeder and High

Today's Transcript:

Neneh Cherry Buffalo Stance - I once saw Neneh Cherry and her family on the beach in Ibiza, fact - Ibiza is an island in the Mediterranean, as is Malta - People from Malta are called “Maltesers”, just like the sweets - “Sweets For My Sweet” was a hit for C J Lewis - C J Lewis shares the same surname as Carl Lewis, the American former Olympian - Olympian is a model of bus made by Leyland - Leyland is a town in Lancashire, as are Chorley, Preston and Darwin - Darwin first name Charles, wrote the book “The Origin Of The Species”, and spent a fair bit of time on the Galapagos islands looking at turtles and stuff - Turtles are related to terrapins, which are basically just miniature turtles, and make very good pets which you can keep in an area the size of a washing up bowl - “Bowl” is an anagram of the word “blow”, which precedes “fish”, “torch” and “monkeys” - Monkeys live in the jungle, as does Tarzan - “Tarzan Boy” was a top 3 hit in 1985 for the now sadly departed Baltimora - If you swap the second A of Baltimora for an E you get “Baltimore”, which is a town in Ireland - Ireland can be reached by ferry from Wales - and when you think of Wales and the great bands it’s created over the years, you think of, amongst others, Feeder - Which links us to this mornings more palatable musical treat (MC - in contrast to You’ll Never Walk Alone by Gerry & The Pacemakers), Feeder and High.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - A few today, despite Daves claims that there was only one mistake:
*That being this - Preston is England’s newest city (since April 2002), and is no longer a town. Now home to the one and only Mr David Nugent of course... we made him what he is. Good luck for Monday.
*However, who exactly calls people from Malta “Maltesers? I would say they are known more commonly as the “Maltese”.
*Are maltesers actually sweets either? I would say they were more chocolate myself.

TRACK INFO: - Released October 1997
- Only spent 2 weeks in the chart and got to number 24.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Feeder’s debut Top 40 chart hit, five years after they were formed back in 1992 by Grant Nicholas and the late Jon Lee in Newport, South Wales. I don’t mind Feeder but I don’t like this tune at all, so many better ones for Vitty to pick from...
- ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from their first full album “Polythene”, released in May 1997 and a record that reached the lofty heights of number.. er *cough* 65 *cough* in the UK Album Chart. ahem.

Armand Van Helden and You Don’t Know Me

Today's Transcript:

Feeder High - High is the opposite of low, while Lowe first name Rupert is the chairman of Southampton FC - Southampton have now sadly been relegated, along with Crystal Palace and Norwich City - Norwich City’s most famous fan is undoubtedly celebrity chef Delia Smith - Delia Smith is good at making cakes - “Cakes” rhymes with “snakes”, which can be deadly and poisonous, a bit like mushrooms and certain types of dangerous berry - Berry first name Nick used to be in Heartbeat - Heartbeat is measured by finding your pulse - A pulse of a different type is something that you might find on a vegetarian menu - ‘Menu” is a good example of a word which is the same in both French and English, a bit like “champagne”, “rendezvous” and “croissants” - Croissants are nice for breakfast, with butter and jam - “Jam” rhymes with “ham”, which is a food that combines something I missed (sorry) with cheese - Cheese can be hard or soft, like water - Water can pose a very real hazard to non swimmers , and parents have to be extra vigilant with young children, who should really be protected with armbands - and if you remove the B from the word “armband” you get “armand”, as in Armand Van Helden, the top DJ and producer type guy - Which links us predictably to this mornings Friday dance fun Tedious Link track, Armand Van Helden and You Don’t Know Me.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Yeah probably. I cant be arsed anymore though so for the purposes of this once no.
TRACK INFO: - Released February 1999
- Armand’s only UK chart topper, featuring Duane Harden, which spent 12 weeks on the UK Top 40 in total..

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Armand Van Helden is a US dance music producer, whose remix produced the January 97 No 1 for Tori Amos with Professional Widow..
- ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from Armand’s debut album “2 Future 4 U”, which got to number 22 in the album charts back in April 1999, spending a total of 6 weeks on the countdown. Now bugger off and enjoy your bank holiday weekend everybody. Goodbye.

Manic Street Preachers and A Design For Life

Today's Transcript:

Armand Van Helden You Don’t Know Me - Armand Van Helden was born in Boston, which is the city where Cheers was based - The cast of Cheers included Ted Danson, Shelley Long and Woody Harrelson, who also starred in the movie “White Men Can’t Jump” - “Jump” was originally a 1984 hit for the Pointer Sisters, before being covered last year by Girls Aloud - Girls Aloud are made up of Kimberley, Sarah, Nadine, Nicola and Cheryl - Cheryl goes out with Ashley Cole, who plays his football for Arsenal - and “arsenal” is the word you’d use to describe a collection of guns - Guns 'N' Roses were led by wirey frontman Axl Rose - A rose is something you might give, or receive , on Valentines Day - Valentines Day takes place every year in February, which numerically is month number 2 - 2Pac has now got another new record even though he’s dead, this time featuring Elton John - Elton John shares the same surname as Stern John, who plays for Coventry - Coventry was bombed extensively during the war by the Germans - Germans like to drink beer, eat sausages and grow moustaches - The word “moustache” begins with the letter M, as do “marmite”, “mosquito” and “motorcycle” - and Motorcycle Emptiness was a big hit for the Manic Street Preachers - Which links us to (MC - the best f*cking band in the world), the Manic Street Preachers and... A Design For Life (Get in!)

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - I refuse to see any after Dave chose this. But go on then:
*Elton John is of course really Reginald Dwight, so therefore doesn’t share the same surname as Stern John at all. Ooops Dave.
*”Jump” was a hit for Girls Aloud in November 2003, i.e. not last year, a fact nobody picked up on.

TRACK INFO: - Released April 1996
- Got to number 2, kept criminally off top spot by Mark Morrison and Gina G, spending a total of 11 weeks on the chart.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - The best song ever written. The best song ever recorded. Fact. The first single released after the disappearance of Richey in February 1995 - its just pure genius. Would have been nice to see Dave choose a different Manics track for Tedious though, which I thought he was gonna do for a second with Motorcycle Emptiness. My top 5 Manics tunes: 1. A Design For Life, 2. Motorcyle Emptiness, 3. Faster, 4. Motown Junk, 5. ifwhiteamerica.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - From “Everything Must Go”, the Manics’ glorious Brit award winning June 1996 comeback, which spawned three subsequent top 10 singles and other gems such as “No Surface All Feeling” and “Elvis Impersonator: Blackpool Pier” (I f*cking love that song). Just a bloody brilliant album, go buy it please. P.S. But The Holy Bible is better.

Salt-N-Pepa and Push It

Today's Transcript:

Manic Street Preachers A Design For Life - A Design For Life reached number 2 in April 1996, the same month that “Ooh Aah... Just A Little Bit” became a number one chart topper for Gina G - Gina G is a good example of a celebrity whose initials are both the same letter, like Angry Anderson, Joan Jett and Gary Glitter - “Glitter” rhymes with “litter”, which should be always be picked up and put in a rubbish bin - Bin Laden, first name Osama is probably the most wanted man in the whole world - “World Party” was the name of the band which included Robbie Williams’ former writing partner Guy Chambers - Chambers are what you might find in a dungeon - “Dungeon” shares the same word ending as “surgeon”, which is the type of person who might perform an operation on you - “You” rhymes with “boo”, which is what you shouldn’t say to a goose - Goose out of Top Gun was played by that baldy guy who then went on to star in ER, although I think he might be dead in that as well now - “Now That We Found Love” was a 1991 hit for Heavy D & The Boyz - Heavy D was born in Jamaica but raised in the Mount Vernon area of New York City - and New York is also the city that gave us the hip hop girl group Salt-N-Pepa - Which links us to their very first release from way back in 1988, Salt-N-Pepa and Push It.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Seamless, bar Dave getting his words muddled up around “Glitter” and “litter”. He is however hereby forgiven (mmm nice alliteration).
TRACK INFO: - Released June 1988
- Now coming up to 17 years old, this track peaked at number 2 and spent 13 weeks on the UK chart back in 88.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Salt-N-Pepa were rappers Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Papa” Denton, plus DJ Dee Dee “Spindarella” Roper. Ha no really. They are also the most commercially successful female rap group of all time. Fact.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - From “Hot, Cool & Vicious”, Salt-N-Pepa’s debut album that’s now only available via import on Amazon. Well I mean, it’s not like you were gonna rush out and buy it or anything, but I just thought I’d let you know anyway... thanks.

Talking Heads and Once In A Lifetime

Today's Transcript:

Salt-N-Pepa Push It - “Push It” is what you might be forced to do if your car had broken down - Down is one of two directional options in a lift - The past tense of the word “lift” is “Lifted”, which was a top 4 hit in 1996 for The Lighthouse Family - A lighthouse is something you’d find by the sea - Sea lions are very intelligent mammals that can balance balls on their head - “Head” is a word you’d associate with shoulders, while “shoulders” rhymes with “boulders”, which can be a hazard during an avalanche - The plural of avalanche is “Avalanches”, who had a top 18 hit in 2001 with “Frontier Psychiatrist” - A psychiatrist is who you might have to go and see if people thought you were mental - Mental As Anything are an Australian band who had a 1986 hit with “Live It Up”, which featured on the soundtrack to the film Crocodile Dundee - Dundee has a river called The Tay - “Tay” rhymes with “hay”, which is highly flammable when dry, therefore it’s easy to burn - and “Byrne”, albeit spelt differently, is the Irish surname that links baldy news buffoon Dominic, scouse music industry legend Tony, and skinny singer/songwriter David Byrne from Talking Heads - Which links us to a bit of classic Tedious Link action, Talking Heads and Once In A Lifetime.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Nope surprisingly. Seamless this morning.
TRACK INFO: - Released February 1981
- Got to number 14 in the UK Singles Chart, spending 10 weeks on the countdown.

Bass-O-Matic and Fascinating Rhythm

Today's Transcript:

Talking Heads Once In A Lifetime - “Once in a lifetime” is the way you might describe the opportunity to attend a special and intimate gig, by let’s say Coldplay - Coldplay are about to release their new album which is called “X & Y” - The letters X & Y are often found in any discussion about chromosomes, and interestingly are also the first two letters in the word “xylophone” - Sir Patrick Moore plays a xylophone, and is a big name in the world of astronomy, which shouldn’t be mistaken for astrology, which is the business of Justin Toper and Russell Grant - Grant is the name of Phil Mitchell’s brother, who was played by the actor Ross Kemp - Ross Kemp shares the same surname as fellow actors, brothers and former Spandau Ballet types Martin and Gary Kemp, who starred together as the Krays - The film “The Krays” was released in 1990, the same year that “Nothing Compares 2 U” topped the charts for Sinead O'Connor, who’s famous for shaving her head, a bit like Natalie Portman is in Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith - “Sith” ryhmes with “pith”, which is what you might find in fruit - Fruit and vegetables are the staple diet of healthy yoga type celebs such as Madonna - Madonna has worked on several of her records with legendary producer William Orbit - and before he started working with Madonna, William Orbit was the man behind many fine records, including the fantastic “Fascinating Rhythm” by Bass-O-Matic - Which links us to Bass-O-Matic and Fascinating Rhythm.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Just the obvious one today:
*The BABE that is Miss Natalie Portman hasn’t shaved her head for Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith. She’s shaved it for her role as Evey Hammond in the upcoming movie “V For Vendetta”.

TRACK INFO: - Released September 1990
- Got to number 9 and spent 11 weeks on the chart.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - It’s a Friday so lazy fact time. This track was last played as a Tedious Link on Friday 27th February 2004, when the team did the show live from Southampton.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Bass” by Bass-O-Matic, which sadly never charted in the Top 40 album chart back in October 1990. It got to number 57. Ah well, lifes a bitch. You can buy it via Amazon if you’re desperate though.

Robbie Williams and Lazy Days

Today's Transcript:

Bass-O-Matic Fascinating Rhythm - “Rhythm” is one of the only words in the English language that doesn’t contain any vowels - Vowels and consonants are what are handed out on Countdown by Carol Vorderman - Carol Vorderman is from North Wales, as is Lisa Scott-Lee, who used to be in Steps - Steps are also known as stairs, which are the recommended safe route out of a multi storey building in the event of fire - “Fire” was a number one chart topper in 1968 for The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown - Arthur Brown shares the same surname as June Brown, who plays Dot Cotton - Cotton is a good material for making t-shirts and handkerchiefs - Handkerchiefs are a good idea if you’ve got a cold, like what we have - “Cold” rhymes with “mould”, which is what you might find growing on cheese and bread - Bread is made by a baker - Baker, first name Cheryl, used to be in Bucks Fizz - Fizz is a character in Coronation Street, which is produced in Manchester - Manchester is the city where Take That were formed - and one of the original members of Take That, before he left to pursue a successful solo career, was of course Mr Robbie Williams - Which links us to Robbie Williams and Lazy Days.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Seamless, although I have thought of another word without a vowel:
*and it’s....... “my”. Wow, I know. Dave could only think up three himself - “lynx”, “sky” and “gypsy”.

TRACK INFO: - Released July 1997
- Robbie’s 3rd solo single (after Freedom + Old Before I Die), this got to number 2 and spent 11 weeks on the chart in total.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - This song is called Lazy Days and today is a lazy day. So therefore I couldn’t be arsed looking up a fact. Fact. Or is it? Hmm. I’m confused.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - From the number one album “Life Thru A Lens” (released 10/97), which spent a huge 123 weeks (thats 2+ years thickos) on the UK Album chart.

Chad Jackson and Hear The Drummer Get Wicked

Today's Transcript:

Robbie Williams Lazy Days - Lazy Days was taken from the album “Life Thru A Lens” - If you remove the last letter of the word “lens” you’re left simply with “Len”. who had a 1999 hit with “Steal My Sunshine”, while “Sunshine On A Rainy Day” was an earlier hit for Zoe - If you know somebody called Zoe, it’s likely that they will be the last name in your phone - “Phone” rhymes with “loan”, which is something you might get from a shark - A shark of a different type is what you wouldn’t want to see when you were swimming - Swimming is something you might do in your trunks - “Trunks” is also a word associated with elephants, which never forget - The English word “forget” is spelt in the same way as the French word “forget” (MC - phonetically “forge ay”), as in Guy Forget, who was a famous name from the world of tennis - Tennis can be played on a number of different surfaces, including grass and clay - Clay, first name Cassius is the real name of the boxer we know as Muhammad Ali - Muhammad Ali isn’t the only famous Muhammad because Gus in EastEnders is played by the actor Mohammed George - “George” is a name that connects soul legend Benson with former US president Bush - and it was George Bush who was in power at the time “Hear The Drummer Get Wicked” was a massive, monster hit for Chad Jackson - Which links us to Chad Jackson and Hear The Drummer Get Wicked.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Only Aled’s flawed knowledge of music:
*He didn’t know that it was James Brown sampled on the end of the track. He thought it was Pete Tong. God help us.

TRACK INFO: - Released June 1990
- Got to number 3 in the singles chart, spending 10 weeks inside The Top 40 in total.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Mr Jackson, or Chad to his family, is apparently a world renowned DJ and producer, the ex Technics World Mixing Champion and DJ at the Hacienda. As an aside, this track used to be used as a bed on the Joe Ferguson Show on Radio City 96.7 in Liverpool. Joe used to be my 2nd favourite DJ behind Moyles, but after leaving Radio City in 2003 and Belfast’s Citybeat this year, he is no longer on the radio. Shame!
- ALBUM DETAILS: - You can get it on disc 1 of “Back To The Old Skool 2”. Mr Chad Jackson only ever released one single (i.e. this) so therefore never recorded an album. F-fact. Oh wrong section, balls.

Reef and Place Your Hands

Today's Transcript:

Chad Jackson Hear The Drummer Get Wicked - Chad Jackson shares the same surname as Kate Jackson, who was one of the three main stars in the original series of “Charlie's Angels” - “Angels” was a number 2 hit in 1997 for Robbie Williams - Robbie Williams supports Port Vale - “Vale” is the name of a ski resort in the state of Colorado - “Colorado” is also the name of an American river, a bit like The Mississippi and The Hudson - Hudson Hawk was a 1991 film starring Bruce Willis - Bruce Willis shares the same first name as Bruce Hornsby, who had a hit with “The Way It Is” in 1986 - 1986 was the year that the World Cup was hosted by Mexico - Mexico borders the southern part of the USA, while the northern part borders Canada - Canada is famous for its geese - Geese are vicious and can be used as an alternative to guard dogs - Dogs can be used to lead blind people and sniff for drugs - Drugs are on the list of things you’re not allowed to bring into the country, as is honey - Honey is sweet, as is cider - Cider is popular in the West Country, as are Reef - and when you think of Reef, you think of their biggest record to date which made it into the top six in the year 1996, it is of course “Place Your Hands” - Which links us therefore unsurprisingly to Reef and Place Your Hands.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Plenty of flaws today flaw-fans:
*Angels by Robbie actually got to number 4 in December 1997, not number 2 as stated.
*Geese are in fact used to sound an alarm, not to attack people like guard dogs
*Cider can also be dry, which is of course the opposite of sweet. Like dur Dave you div.

Tone Loc and Wild Thing

Today's Transcript:

Reef Place Your Hands - “Hans” is a popular name in Germany, the birthplace of Boris Becker - Boris Becker plays tennis - Tennis is a sport you’d associate with Wimbledon, which is also the home of the Wombles - Wombles have big noses, which was also a characteristic of the Romans - The Romans were responsible for building lots of straight roads in Great Britain - Great Britain is who Zola Budd used to run for, even though she was actually South African, which incidentally is also the nationality that Patsy Kensit’s character was in Lethal Weapon 2 - Lethal Weapon 2 is a film that provided the now classic cinematic quote “diplomatic immunity!” - Immunity is what you should have if you’ve received a vaccine - The word “vaccine” comes from the Latin word “vacca”, meaning cow (educational) - Cowhide is used to make leather sofas - “Sofa” is another word for a “couch”, which is a word often grouped with potato - Potato is a good vegetable for making soup - The amount of letters in the word “soup” is exactly four - and Four Weddings And A Funeral featured the Wet Wet Wet mega hit “Love Is All Around”, which was written by Reg Presley from The Troggs, who also had a hit with “Wild Thing”, which was also the title of a 1989 hit by Tone Loc - Which links us to Tone Loc and Wild Thing.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Not really:
*Some texters were saying Zola Budd was actually born in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, but my research tells me otherwise. So bravo Dave. Fine record too...

Bizarre Inc and Playing With Knives

Today's Transcript:

Tone Loc Wild Thing - Tone Loc is from California, as is Gwen Stefani, who’s married to Gavin Rossdale from Bush - “Bush” rhymes with “push”, which is one of two directional options on a door - A door is what normally provides your escape in the event of a fire - “Fire Woman” was a 1989 hit for The Cult - The Cult now consist essentially of founder members Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy - Billy Duffy shares the same surname as Stephen 'Tin Tin' Duffy, who had a 1985 hit with “Kiss Me (With Your Mouth)” - “Mouth” is a word that is often associated with the seaward exit of a river - River Phoenix is the name of a now sadly departed actor, who starred alongside Harrison Ford and Sean Connery in the 1989 film “Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade” - If you add an R to the end of crusade you get “crusader”, which is a model name of the last batch of Ford Cortinas - The Ford Cortina was replaced by the Ford Sierra - Ciara is a mate of Missy Elliott’s, who also probably knows Eminem and D12 - D12 is the rap collective that includes the musical talents of the fat dude at the back called Bizarre - and if Bizarre decided he wasn’t good enough to make it in the world of music, and wanted to set up a company that manufactured ink and fountain pens and photocopiers and stuff, he might call his company Bizarre Ink - Which links us to Bizarre Inc and Playing With Knives.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Like none..
TRACK INFO: - Released November 1991
- Originally reached number 43 in March 91, but when re issued got to number 4.. spending 8 weeks on the chart.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Released at the peak of the rave era, "Playing With Knives" is widely seen as one of the most important records of its genre, and is totally indicative of the time. Bizarre Inc were the headline act at all the major venues of the day and this was the record that crossed all mainstream boundaries - being played by Carl Cox, Danny Rampling etc. Tis a fact kids. Ta.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - From the 1992 album “Energique”, which never even made the UK Top 40 Album Chart. Bizarre Inc hits are available on all sorts of dance compilations, and this single still available to buy via Import on Amazon.co.uk > Click here for the link.

Bizarre Inc Playing With Knives - Knives are what you might find in a kitchen, along with pots and pans and a kitchen sink - “Sink” is what you hope doesn’t happen to you if you’re taking part in a round the world yacht race - “The Race” was a 1988 hit for Yello, who I think were from Austria - The capital of Austria is Vienna - “Vienna” was a 1981 hit for Ultravox, who were of course fronted by Midge Ure - “You’re The Voice” was recorded by John Farnham - “Farnham” is the name of a town in Surrey - Surrey is a county that plays cricket, and in that respect shares something in common with Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Yorkshire and Lancashire - Yorkshire and Lancashire are the two counties that took part in The War Of The Roses - “The War Of The Roses” was also the title of a 1989 film starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, who also starred together in “Romancing The Stone” - Stone first name Joss was brought up in Devon, however she was actually born in Dover - Dover is approximately 80 miles from London - and when you think of London in the context of great records by The Clash, you think of course of London Calling - Which links us to The Clash and London Calling.

Tedious Facts:

Ce Ce Peniston and Finally

Today's Transcript:

The Clash London Calling - London Calling was released in 1979, the same year that “I Don’t Like Mondays” was a number one for The Boomtown Rats - Rats spread disease and are therefore considered vermin - “Vermin” sounds a bit like “Vernon”, as in Vernon Kay, who’s now on telly in America as the host of Hit Me Baby One More Time - “Hit Me Baby One More Time” was of course a big hit for Britney Spears - Spears were always the weapon of choice for the Zulu’s - “Zulu” was the title of a classic film starring Michael Caine, who also starred in The Italian Job - The Italian Job was based in Turin, and was parodied in the “Pick A Part That’s New” video by Stereophonics - Stereophonics feature two original members, both with the surname “Jones” - “Jones” is also the surname of our very own team members Rachel and Aled - “Aled” is an anagram of “Dale”, as in Dale Winton, the former host of Pets Win Prizes - The single form of prizes is “prize”, which is what you might have to do to your finger to release it from underneath a huge rock, if it had become trapped - “Trapped” was a 1985 hit for Colonel Abrams - and the word “trapped” consists of exactly seven letters, the same amount curiously as the word “Finally”, which was a big hit for Ce Ce Peniston - Which links us to Ce Ce Peniston and of course Finally

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Nah, just Chris and Dave debating when this was released (see below for track info).
TRACK INFO: - Released originally October 1991. then re-issued in March 1992
- In two chart appearances has spent a collective total of 15 weeks on the countdown, peaking first at no. 29 and then second time around at number 2..

- MC FACT ATTACK: - This is a gay anthem. Supposedly. Not that I’d know cos I’m not gay or owt. Mind you Aled told Dave he was gay for choosing it, so who am I to disagree.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - Available on the album “Ce Ce Peniston: Essential”, which you would think would only be one song long... but no, there’s actually 16 others on there too. Wowsers.

Blink 182 and All The Small Things

Today's Transcript:

Ce Ce Peniston Finally - Ce Ce Peniston’s “Finally” was first released in 1991, although it didn’t make it into the top ten until March 1992 - 1992 was the year that the Euro championships were won by joint host nation Denmark - Denmark is famous for its bacon - Bacon can be cut into rashes, which shouldn’t be mistaken for rashes which you sometimes get on your skin, and need to treat with cream - “Cream” was a hit for Prince and The New Power Generation - Generation X were the band that launched the career of Billy Idol - Billy Idol shares the same surname, albeit spelt differently, as Eric Idle from Monty Python - A python is a type of large snake, several of which used to be owned by Slash from Guns 'N' Roses - “Slash” is a slang term for a wee, which is also a Scottish term for small - Small first name Gladstone, is a famous cricketer from yesteryear who has a very small neck, a bit like comedian Sandi Toksvig - Sandi Toksvig shares the same first name as golfer Sandy Lyle, who is Scottish, a bit like Runrig and Travis - The band Travis are made up of Fran, Dougal, Andy and Neil, however there is another Travis in the world of popular music, and that’s Travis the drummer from Blink 182 - Which links us to Blink 182 and All The Small Things.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Seamless according to Dave, but:
*Sandi Toksvig only shares the same first name as Sandy Lyle phonetically, which Chris is usually very picky about.
*Also, I’m pretty sure Euro 92 was only held in Sweden, not Denmark as well. I was only five years old at the time so If I’m wrong I have good reason to be.

TRACK INFO: - Released March 2000
- This track spent 10 weeks on the chart and got to number 2, only kept off top spot by Geri Halliwell’s abysmal “Bag It Up”. Urgh what an awful record that was.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Last play for this on Tedious Link was November 30th last year. Fact (short and simple).
- ALBUM DETAILS: - From their March 2000 debut “Enema Of The State”, which spent 32 weeks on the Album Chart and got to number 15.

Blur and The Universal

Today's Transcript:

Blink 182 All The Small Things - Blink is what you might be forced to do if you got a bit of grit in your eye - “Eye Of The Tiger” was a 1982 hit for Survivor, and was taken from the sountrack to Rocky starring “Slyvester Stallone” - Slyvester Stallone’s mother Jackie was a guest on the last series of Celebrity Big Brother, along with Bez - Bez was a non musical member of the Happy Mondays, who were fronted by Shaun Ryder, who then went on to form Black Grape - The black grape will often contain a seed - If you add the word “lightning” to the front of seed you get “Lightning Seeds” who had a 1992 hit with “The Life Of Riley” - Riley first name Lisa used to be in Emmerdale, which is where you’d now find Patsy Kensit, who used to be in Lethal Weapon 2 - Lethal Weapon 2 also starred Mel Gibson and Danny Glover - If you swap the G of Glover for a C you get “clover”, which is a type of spread - Spread is what you might put on toast for breakfast - Breakfast is apparently the most important meal of the day and can consist of anything from bacon and eggs to fruit or cereal, such as cornflakes or All Bran - and All Bran is an anagram of “All barn” - Albarn of course, first name Damon, being the lead singer of Blur - Which links us to Blur and The Universal

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - They didn’t check due to Dermot being on, but yeah:
*If you add the word “lightning” to the front of seed you get “Lightning Seed” not the Lightning Seeds. Picky but true.
*Patsy Kensit “used to be in Lethal Weapon 2”. What - as opposed to the people who are in it now?
*I’m also not sure about the All barn - Albarn link. Phonetically granted yes, but Dave didn’t mention that for a second day in a row...... hmm I’ve just realised I have far too much time on my hands.

TRACK INFO: - Released November 1995
- This awesome track deservedly went in top 5 (peaking at 5), spending a further 8 weeks on the chart.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Not a fact, just a bizarre choice by Vitty. I mean I love this record, but when Chris played it on Buzz Off last year I remember Dave buzzing it off immediately and calling it “dull”. Seems like he has seen sense at last eh?
- ALBUM DETAILS: - You can catch it on November 2000’s “Best Of” Blur compilation, along with the usual favourites.. Parklife, Song 2, Country House, There’s No Other Way, Beetlebum etc.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Seamless probably. It’s a Friday so I ain’t checking.
TRACK INFO: - Released June 2001
- Got to number 3 in The UK Top 40, spending 10 weeks in total on the chart.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Undoubtedly a fine record, but it is a part time player on the R1 Playlist.. so I was slightly disappointed Dave didn’t go for Insomnia or an older dance tune. Always reminds me of Radio 1’s One Big Sunday in Leicester in 2001... I mean I never went or owt but I just remember it. Fact.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - You can get it on “Forever Faithless”, their new Greatest Hits CD, which entered The UK Album Chart at number one last month.

Stevie Wonder and Superstition

Today's Transcript:

Faithless We Come 1 - Faithless are fronted by Maxi Jazz and Sister Bliss - “Bliss” rhymes with “hiss”, which is the noise made by a snake - The plural of snake is “snakes”, which in the world of board games are the opposite of ladders - Ladders are used by painters and window cleaners - Window cleaners normally require a bucket - “Bucket” was the title of a recent record by the Kings Of Leon - “Lyon” spelt with a Y rather than an E is France’s second city after Paris - Paris Hilton is a millionairess socialite, who is now also famous for her movie work - If you swap the first letter of “work” for a P you get “pork”, which is what you might serve apple sauce with - Apple sauce is normally served in jars, a bit like honey - “Honey To The Bee” was a 1999 hit for Billie Piper, who now stars in Doctor Who alongside Christopher Eccleston - Christopher Eccleston is a famous actor, a bit like Will Smith - Will Smith has starred in loads of movies over the years, the most recent ones being “Hitch” and “iRobot” - and iRobot has a soundtrack that features the classic Stevie Wonder track “Superstition” - Which links us to a bit of special Stevie Wonder action on a Monday morning, Stevie Wonder and Superstition.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Three this morning:
*Apple sauce isn’t served in jars apparently.
*Christopher Eccleston doesn’t star with Billie Piper now in Doctor Who, that’s David Tennant.
*Also not spotted by listeners in listener land, “The Bucket” not “Bucket” was the title of the recent record by Kings Of Leon. Pernickity maybe, but factually correct nonetheless.

TRACK INFO: - Released February 1973
- Criminally failed to go top ten (reached number 11) and spent 9 weeks on the chart...

- MC FACT ATTACK: - This track was intended for Jeff Beck but Stevie Wonder recorded a rough version, which was released before Beck came round to recording it.. and the rest as they say, is history. This was also recorded at Electric Lady Studios, which is where Jimi Hendrix recorded. Fact.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - Track 1 on Disc 1 of “Stevie Wonder: The Definitive Collection”, a number 16 album chart hit back in November 2002.

R.E.M and It's The End Of The World As We Know It

Today's Transcript:

Stevie Wonder Superstition - Stevie Wonder appeared in the “We Are The World” video along with Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper and Kenny Loggins - Kenny Loggins had a 1984 hit with “Foot Loose”, the title track of the movie of the same name, which starred Kevin Bacon, who also starred in “Flatliners” along with 24 star Kiefer Sutherland - Kiefer Sutherland has a father called Donald - “Donald” is probably the most popular name for a pet duck, along with Howard, while Howard Donald (who had nothing to do with ducks whatsoever) was actually the hairy Jesus looking one in Take That - The amount of number one hit singles amassed by Take That during their early 90’s pop reign totals 8 - 8 is regarded by the Chinese as being a lucky number, unlike 4, which is considered unlucky cos it sounds a bit like the word “death” - Death In Vegas were originally meant to produce the current Oasis album “Don’t Believe The Truth” - If you remove the first letter of “truth” you’re left simply with “ruth”, as in Ruth Rendall, who does those mysteries and stuff - “Mysterious Ways” was a 1991 hit for U2, who Dom and Chris and Rachel saw on Saturday night at Twickenham - Twickenham is somewhere you’d normally watch rugby - Rugby is played in jerseys which are normally distinguishable from one other, by different coloured stripes and stuff - and if you remove the letter “R” from the word “stripe” you’re left simply with “stipe”, as in Michael Stipe from R.E.M - Which links us to R.E.M and It's The End Of The World As We Know It.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - A couple as expected:
*Rugby jerseys apparently have hoops and not stripes or something.. those crazy egg chasers.
*Plus, of course, “four” doesn’t sound anything like “death” - be it in English, Cantonese or er.. Hebrew. Dave was fighting a losing battle put it that way.

TRACK INFO: - Released December 1991
- Surely the greatest record ever to go in at number 39? Surely?

- MC FACT ATTACK: - The line "Lenny Bruce, Lester Bangs, Birthday party cheesecake jelly bean boom" was inspired by a party in New York that Michael Stipe and Peter Buck went to for Lester Bang, a music critic’s, birthday.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - Available on “The Best Of R.E.M”, a top 7 album back in October 1991, charting the bands history up to 1987. The final track on the album is the highlight, being said song chosen by Mr Vitty. Surely the best record to put on if you are told you have 5 minutes left to live btw.

*A big thanks to Console from the messageboard for helping me out with a clip of todays link.

Groove Armada and Superstylin'

Today's Transcript:

R.E.M It's The End Of The World As We Know It - R.E.M have a guitarist called Peter Buck - “Buck” is a word associated with male rabbits - Rabbits tend to have floppy ears - If you add the letter “B” into the front of “ears” you get “bears”, which can be really big and live on fresh salmon and stuff - Salmon is pink - Pink had a big hit with “Get The Party Started”, although Pink isn’t her real name and she was actually born Alicia Moore - Alicia Moore shares the same surname as Dudley Moore, who starred in many fine movies including “Arthur 2: On the Rocks” - “On the rocks” in the world of bar stewards means “over ice” - Ice is what you’d expect to find in Alaska - Alaska is one of only two United States that exist outside of continental USA - The USA and much of South America was discovered by the Spaniards, who were decent sailors, and used to go off discovering places and making them all speak Spanish and stuff, years ago - They used to do this by setting off in a big group of ships, and they used to call this group of ships an “armada” - and when you think of the word “armada” in the context of great bands who make great records, which might sound nice on a sunny day (hope it’s sunny where you are), you think of Groove Armada - Which links us to Groove Armada and Superstylin'.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - Surprisingly no. Mark this day in your diary kids.
TRACK INFO: - Released August 2001
- Spent 7 weeks on the chart, peaking outside the top ten at number 12.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - The second Tedious Link this week to include “super” in it’s title... and that my friends, is what you call scraping the bottom of the barrel.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - Available on October 2004’s top six album “Groove Armada: The Best Of”, which features 13 other tracks including “At The River”, “I See You Baby” and “If Everybody Looked The Same”.

The Charlatans and Love Is The Key

Today's Transcript:

Groove Armada Superstylin' - Groove Armada are one of the few dance acts in the world to include the use of a live trombone - The trombone is a brass instrument that uses a slide - "Slide Away" is an Oasis classic, taken from the Definitely Maybe album released in 1994 - 1994 was the year that the World Cup was hosted by the USA - The USA is a country that uses the presidential system of leadership - The Presidents Of The USA was also the name of a band who had a top 8 hit in 1996 with "Peaches" - Peaches are a fruit that are often sold in tins - Tins are, as the name would suggest, made from the metal “tin”, which was traditionally mined in Cornwall - Cornwall is a nice place to go on holiday, as is Majorca - Majorca has been put on the world music map as the home of DJ Sammy - DJ Sammy's current musical offering is a re interpretation of the Annie Lennox classic "Why" - Y can also be a letter in the English language, a bit like A, B or C - and C is the first letter of a lot of great bands that we know and love, such as Chicago, Cast, Creedence Clearwater Revival and of course The Charlatans - Which links us to The Charlatans and Love Is The Key.

Tedious Facts:

- FLAWS: - I would question the fact that Chicago and Creedence Clearwater Revival are bands we know and love.. but bar that yeah seamless I suppose.
TRACK INFO: - Released September 2001
- Got to number 16 (should have been top 5 easily), and spent a total of just 3 weeks on the chart.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - The second Charlatans Tedious Link track in five weeks, after “North Country Boy” was played on May 19th.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - From the September 2001 album “Wonderland”, which got to number 2 on the album chart, spending 5 weeks on there in total.
