The Vengaboys and We're Going To Ibiza!

Today's Transcript:

Stardust Music Sounds Better With You - Stardust first name Alvin is somebody you’d associate with road safety - Road safety is important, and you should always follow the green cross code - Codes and colours are often used in safety stuff, with code red meaning “danger” - Danger Zone was a hit for Kenny Loggins - Log ins are what computer support staff give you, in order for you to get onto your computer - The computer was invented by Charles Babbage - “Babbage” shares many of the same letters as “cabbage”, which is something that Rachel probably grows on her windowsill - The plural of sill is sills, which are also found on cars and can be vunerable to rust - Rust is basically just iron oxide - Oxide is the musical partner of Neutrino, as in Oxide & Neutrino, who I think were also part of the So Solid Crew - Crew are required on a boat - A boat is a giod way of getting to an island, such as Ibiza - and Ibiza is a great place to go on holiday, especially if you like dancing and Radio 1 - and this weekend Radio 1 is celebrating ten years of going to Ibiza as you’ve probably heard - So to comemerate this monumental anniversary, it seems appropriate to play a record that is synomonous with the whole vibe of the White Isle - Which links us predictably to the Vengaboys and We're Going To Ibiza!

Tedious Facts:

- SEAMLESS?: - Nearly:
*Danger Zone wasn’t really a hit for Kenny Loggins - it got to number 45 in the UK Chart.

TRACK INFO: - Released September 1999
- Amazingly The Vengaboys second number one single, which spent 12 weeks on the chart.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - The Vengaboys were the first Netherlands based act to score six successive top five singles in the UK. What with all that competition eh..
- ALBUM DETAILS: - From April 99’s “The Party Album!”, which went to number six in the album charts and criminally spent another 48 weeks on there. *spits*.

Placebo and Nancy Boy

Today's Transcript:

Vengaboys We’re Going To Ibiza! - Ibiza is where Radio 1 held a 12 hour party at Space on Saturday night - “Saturday Night” was the title of a 1994 record for Whigfield - Whigfield is from Denmark - Denmark play England in a friendly on Wednesday night - If you add a K to the front of night you get “knight”, as in Knightrider starring David Hasselhoff, or Leon Knight who scored for Brighton in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Crewe Alexandra - If you add an I to Alexandra you get “Alexandria”, which is the capital of Egypt - Egypt is where you go to see the pyramids - and “pyramids” is also a word associated with tea bags - Tea bags are normally kept in the kitchen - The kitchen is also where you’d expect to find a fridge - A fridge keeps things cool and stops them from melting, which is why it’s often a good place to keep chocolate - Some of the best chocolate in the world comes from Belgium - The capital of Belgium is Brussels - and Brussels is the birthplace of singer and guitarist Mr Brian Molko from the band Placebo - Which links us to Placebo and Nancy Boy.

Tedious Facts:

- SEAMLESS?: - Eugene and the text regulars helped to pick holes in the Tedious Link:
*The capital of Egypt is Cairo, not Alexandria. Sounds obvious I know but Dave does do his best to f*ck things up doesn’t he.

TRACK INFO: - Released February 1997
- Placebo’s second Top 40 hit went top four, spending six weeks on the chart.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - A placebo is a substance which has no effect on the body, yet looks identical to the experimental drug being investigated. Or something. I don’t actually care.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - From Placebo’s June 96 self titled debut album “Placebo”, which reached number five on the album charts upon re entry (good mornin’) in February 97. Wow.

Zoe and Sunshine On A Rainy Day

Today's Transcript:

Placebo Nancy Boy - A placebo’s basically a substance that contains no medicinal qualities, but is given to someone to reassure them and pyschologically help them to get well and feel better - “Better Days” was a 1992 hit for Bruce Springsteen - Bruce Springsteen once invited Courteney Cox up on stage, and she danced with him in one of his videos when she was very young - Young MC provided the Y entry for Colin and Edith’s A-Z compilation tape yesterday, with the seldom heard genius track that is “I Know” - Phonetically “know” is the opposite of “yes” - Yes had a 1983 hit with “Owner Of A Lonely Heart”, while Heart on the other hand had their biggest hit in 1987 with “Alone” - If you add a T and an H to the middle of alone you get “Athlone”, which is a town in the Republic Of Ireland - The Republic Of Ireland is where The Corrs and The Cranberries are from, and also where Joe Elliott from Def Leppard now lives - Def Leppard are originally from Sheffield, as are The Human League, Pulp, Babybird and Heaven 17 - Heaven 17 are a good example of an act who re released the same track more than once, in their case it was “Temptation” - and this is exactly what Zoe did, with her track “Sunshine On A Rainy Day”, which was first released in 1990 but then re released a year later when it smashed into the charts at number four - Which links us to Zoe and Sunshine On A Rainy Day.

Tedious Facts:

- SEAMLESS?: - Ha. Rubbish, failed link today (graded D- by Chris):
*Firstly there was some debate over the definition of a placebo and the birthplace of The Corrs.
*The Young MC track was “Know How”, not “I Know” (a De La Soul track) which subsequently buggers up the next connection and therefore the entire link.
*Dave’s claim that Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott lives in Ireland was off the back of no evidence whatsoever, just the fact he used to live there years ago. He said it was “hunch” he still did.
*If you add a T and an H to the middle of Alone you actually get “Altohne” not “Athlone”. Dave covered up by claiming the middle of a word was anything between the first and last letter. Chris quite rightly pointed out his blatant stupidity with his example the word “yesterday”, and the fact that according to Daves rules, the first “E” in it is therefore in the middle of the word. Total rollocks.
*Also, the Zoe and Heaven 17 tracks were remixed, not re released in their original state as such. Dave called that “musicologist tittle tattle”.

TRACK INFO: - Remix Released August 1991
- Long runner, with eleven weeks on the chart in total - peaking at number 4, as stated in the link.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Zoe’s surname was “Pollock”. Fact.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - You can get it on the dance compilation “Back To Love Volume 1” - Full tracklisting on Amazon here.

Foo Fighters and Everlong

Today's Transcript:

Zoe Sunshine On A Rainy Day - Sunshine on a rainy day is what normally results in the weather phenomenon that we call a “rainbow” - Rainbow had a top six hit in 1979 with “Since You've Been Gone” - “Gone With The Wind” is a classic movie starring Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable - A gable is what you might find on the roof - “Roof” shares many of the same letters as the word “hoof”, which is like the animal word equivalent of a foot - A foot is a unit of imperial measurement, as is a yard - A yard is also what the Americans have outside their house - “House Of Love” was a 1992 hit for East 17 - East 17 is the postcode for Walthamstow, which is where Brian Harvey is from - Brian Harvey accidentally ran over himself with his own car - If you add an additional R onto the end of car you get “carr”, as in the surname of Stephen Carr, who used to play for Spurs but is now at Newcastle - Newcastle is the location of the forthcoming Great North Run - “Run To The Hills” was a big hit for Iron Maiden - and Iron Maiden are headlining this years Reading & Leeds festivals (MC edit - Which I’m going to! But definitely not to see them..), as are the Pixies and the Foo Fighters - Which links us to the mighty Foo Fighters and Everlong.

Tedious Facts:

- SEAMLESS?: - In a word, no:
*Gables are joined to the roof and wall, so more in the brickline of the house than actually on the roof itself.
*Also, not all Americans have yards outside their houses - especially if they live in apartments.

TRACK INFO: - Released August 1997
- Peaked at number 18 in the Top 40, spending 3 weeks on the chart..

- MC FACT ATTACK: - There are hundreds of different interpretations of the lyrics of Everlong, e.g it’s about heroin, rough sex, Dave Grohl’s ex wife... and Kurt and Courtney.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - From the Foos’ top 3 second album “The Colour And The Shape”, released in May 97. Other tracks include Monkey Wrench and My Hero.

Take That and Back For Good

Today's Transcript:

Foo Fighters Everlong - The drummer from the Foo Fighters is called Taylor - “Taylor” is the surname that links three of the original members of Duran Duran, even though none of them are actually related - If you swap the first letter of related for a B you get “belated”, which is a word associated with greeting cards which are late - Late has the general meaning of the word “tardy” - “Tardy” rhymes with “mardy”, which is another word for grumpy - Grumpy is the name of one of the seven dwarfs - The seven dwarfs hung out with Snow White - Snow White shares the same surname as Jimmy White, who recently changed his name to “Brown” as part of a corporate promotion for a well known brand of sauce - Source featuring Candi Staton had a big hit with "You Got The Love" - "Love Me Tender" was a hit for Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley shares the same surname as Priscilla Presley, who starred in the Naked Gun movies alongside Leslie Nielsen - Leslie Nielsen shares the same christian name as Leslie Grantham - Leslie Grantham has got a webcam like Chris Moyles - and Chris Moyles has met lots of showbiz personalities over the years, including Mark Owen and Robbie Williams, who both used to be in a band called “Take That” - Which links us to Take That and Back For Good.

Tedious Facts:

- SEAMLESS?: - I think so:
*Just text debate on the members of Duran Duran and how they are all related or not, which was frankly quite dull.

TRACK INFO: - Released April 1995
- Of course, went straight in at number one, spending 13 weeks on the chart.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - This was Take That’s best selling single, with 959,582 copies sold in total.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - From the May 95 number one album “Nobody Else”, which spent 33 weeks on the UK Album Chart.

[MC Edit: or more accurately Cliff Richard & The Shadows & The Norrie Paramor Strings.. and Summer Holiday. Thanks..]

- SEAMLESS?: - Yes, I think so. Sir Robert of Williamshire was in though, so the post-link analysis wasn’t up to its usual detailed standard.
TRACK INFO: - Released March 1986
- Spent eleven weeks on the Top 40 countdown, peaking at numero trois.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Today (as in Monday 5th September) would have been Freddie’s 59th birthday. FACT.

Missy Elliott feat. Ludacris and Gossip Folks (Fatboy Slim Remix)

Today's Transcript:

Queen A Kind Of Magic - Magic is the business of Paul Daniels, who used to host “Wipeout” - “Wipeout” was a hit for the Fat Boys & The Beach Boys - The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson shares the same surname as both Quentin Wilson and Steve Wilson, who used to present Live & Kicking - If you add an A to the front of “Live & Kicking” you get “Alive And Kicking”, which was a 1985 hit for Simple Minds - Simple Minds were led by Jim Kerr, who has a son with Patsy Kensit, who also has a son by Liam Gallagher, and is now in Emmerdale along with that bird who played Marilyn in Home and Away, who I think used to go out with Matt Le Tissier - Matt Le Tissier is from Guernsey - Guernsey is famous for cattle - Cattle are prevented from straying onto main busy roads with the use of a grid - The Grid had a hit with “Swamp Thing” in 1994, the same year that “Carry Me Home” was a big hit for Gloworm - A gloworm, as the name would suggest, can glow in the dark - “Dark” rhymes with “lark”, which is a type of bird, as is a chicken - Chicken is what you might buy from a butcher, like Fred Elliott out of Corrie - and Fred Elliott shares the same surname as Missy Misdemeanour Elliott the singer - Which links us, unusually for me, to Missy Elliott feat. Ludacris and Gossip Folks (Fatboy Slim Remix).

Tedious Facts:

- SEAMLESS?: - Hmm. Kind of:
*Apparently “her out of Emmerdale” left last night, although Dave and Emma were busy watching Location: Location: Location on the other side, so Vitty couldn’t confirm this flaw.

TRACK INFO: - Released March 2003
- Got to number nine and spent nine weeks on The Official Chart, at the time presented by Wes.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - The last time Dave chose this as Tedious Link was Friday 18th of March earlier this year - proving that this feature is now conclusively dead due to Daves choices being repeated in 4/5 month cycles. Anyway, the last time he chose it the track wasn’t in the system so Chris had to play 4 My People instead. The point being, two Missy Elliott tracks on the show OUT OF CHOICE this year is two too many, as far as I’m concerned.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - You don’t care frankly do you. Plus I also refuse to promote Missy Elliott’s back catalogue in any way. Don’t buy her records people.. maybe then she’ll go away.

Ian Brown and F.E.A.R

Today's Transcript:

Missy Elliott feat. Ludacris Gossip Folks - Missy Elliott did “Car Wash” from the soundtrack to “A Shark’s Tale” with Christina Aguilera - Christina Aguilera used to do the Disney Club with Britney Spears, who’s now currently pregnant, a bit like Mariella Frostrup - Mariella Frostrup is Scandanavian, as is Magnus Magnusson - Magnus Magnusson used to present “Mastermind”, which is now done by Mr John Humphrys - John Humphrys shares the same initials as Jimi Hendrix - Jimi Hendrix is now sadly no longer with us, and in that respect shares something in common with King Harold - King Harold died when he got hit in the eye with an arrow at the Battle Of Hastings - The Battle Of Hastings took place in the year 1066 - If you add up all of the numbers contained within the numerical representation of the date 1066, you get 13 - Spookily 13 is the exact total number of letters contained in the words “The Stone Roses” - and the Stone Roses were fronted by the legend that is Mr Ian Brown - Which links us to Ian Brown and F.E.A.R

Tedious Facts:

- SEAMLESS?: - No, but just the one mistake:
*Magnus Magnusson is infact from Iceland - which isn’t part of Scandanavia, so thus he is not Scandanavian. He is Icelandic though, a bit like Björk. Thanks.

TRACK INFO: - Released September 2001
- Spent just four weeks on the chart and only got to number 13, when it deserved much better.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Brown appeared in a cameo role in the film version of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), due to him being good friends with the director Alfonso Cuarón. Fact.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - Taken from his third and highest charting solo album to date, “Music Of The Spheres” (number 3 in Oct 01). A musical genius and you should all own an Ian Brown or Stone Roses album. If not, “Ian Brown: The Greatest” (Hits) is out soon.

Tedious Facts:

- SEAMLESS?: - No, as Dave messed up his Oslo link:
*He added an E to create the word “lose” when it wasn’t needed. It gave us “loose” instead. The silly billy.

TRACK INFO: - Released February 1992
- Spent six weeks on the chart and cracked the top twenty, getting to number sixteen.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - For those of you unaware, Pearl Jam were a big part of the early 90’s US grunge explosion, along with Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. Kurt Cobain at one point attacked the group because he saw them as commercial "sell outs"; however Kurt and Eddie Vedder later made up and reportedly became friends. Fact.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - It’s all in the link there kids. From 1991’s “Ten”. Go purchase if of that musical persuasion. Peace Out.

Tedious Facts:

TRACK INFO: - Released December 1994 & April 1995
- In two seperate entries, the track clocked up over 15 weeks on the chart and a top 4 position. Deserved it too.

Tedious Facts:

- SEAMLESS?: - Just the one:
*Everybody Wants To Run The World came out for Sport Aid (following Live Aid the year before), not Sport Relief.

TRACK INFO: - Released May 1986
- This charity single got to number five and spent seven weeks on Radio 1’s Top 40.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Sport Aid was held on May 25, 1986, and is the sporting event with the most participants in history. It took place in 78 countries simultaneously, and was organised by Bob Geldof (who else?). As Dom would say - so now you know.

Tedious Facts:

- SEAMLESS?: - “Not quite, no” to quote the Tedious one himself:
*Marky Mark was in The Funky Bunch, not New Kids On The Block. Dave’s wife Emma went to see New Kids On The Block at the NEC in Birmingham y’know... fascinating.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Yello were Swiss male/instrumental duo Dieter Meier and Boris Blank. Ha ha, no yah really.

Yello The Race - Yello are from Austria - The capital of Austria is “Vienna”, which was also the title of the biggest hit by Ultravox - Ultravox were fronted by Midge Ure, who organised Live 8 with Bob Geldof - Bob Geldof shares the same initials as Barry Gibb, who was the tall, hairy one out of the Bee Gees - The Bee Gees are brothers, a bit like The Osmonds - The Osmonds are also Mormons, which is a type of religious group, a bit like the Amish People, who don’t drive cars or watchy telly and stuff, and actually was their clothes with a mangle - “Mangle” was the surname of Joe Mangle in Neighbours, who was played by the actor Mark Little - Mark Little shares the same surname as Stuart Little, who is a mouse - The plural of mouse is mice - If you swap the M from “mice” with an R you get “rice”, which is a type of carbohydrate like pasta and bread and stuff - Carbohydrates are a good thing to eat if you’re doing a big long run, like The Great North Run, which we’re doing this Sunday, you’ve probably heard - and if you came to the Great North Run to cheer us on, and were stood on the finish line, we would literally “run to you”, like the famous running anthem from Bryan Adams, Run To You - Which links us to todays clever athletics based Tedious Link track Bryan Adams and Run To You (bob on).

Tedious Facts:

- SEAMLESS?: - Couple of minor major problems today Dave:
*Yello are from Switzerland, not Austria.
*Bob Geldof’s initials are R.G, as in “Robert Geldof”, not Bob Geldof.
*Mangles are used to dry not wash clothes. Dave argued something about them being involved in the washing process.. and then I lost interest.
*Also, and I do like this record, but is it really a “running anthem?” Discuss amongst yourselves.

TRACK INFO: - Released January 1985
- Spent 12 weeks on the chart, just peaking short of the top ten at number 11.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - This was Bryan Adams’ debut UK hit single, 248 months ago back in January 1985. I wasn’t even born then and stuff. Woah.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - From “Reckless”, the debut album, released by Bryan in March 1985. Number 7, 115 weeks... all that guff I usually say.

Today's Transcript:

Bryan Adams Run To You - Bryan Adams is Canadian, as is the beautiful Evangeline Lilly, who plays Kate in “Lost” - “Lost In Music” was a hit for Sister Sledge, as was “We Are Family”, while “Family Affair” was a hit for Mary J Blige - “Blige” is an anagram of “bilge”, which is a nautical term to describe the rounded portion of a ship's hull - Hull is a city on the river Humber - If you replace the H of “Humber” with an L you get “lumber”, which is the lower region of the back - “Back In The USSR” was a 1976 hit for The Beatles - The only two surviving members of which sadly are Ringo and Paul McCartney - Paul McCartney performed at Maida Vale on Monday night, as part of Zane Lowe’s “Legends Week”, which also features performances from The Prodigy and Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden knocked us out of this years celebrity Soccer Six tournament, which was held at West Ham - West Ham beat Villa 4-0 on Monday night with an astonishing Premiership hatrick from Marlon Harewood - Marlon Harewood shares the same surname as Marlon Brando, who is a famous actor, a bit like Kevin Kline - If you add an "in" to the front of Kline, and swap the K for a C, you get “incline”, which is a word associated with hills, of which there are many on The Great North Run - and when we do the run on Sunday, we will be running up that road and running up those hills, just like the famous record by Kate Bush - Which links us to Kate Bush and Running Up That Hill.

Tedious Facts:

- SEAMLESS?: - Not quite nope:
*Marlon Harewood and Marlon Brando share the same christian name, not surname.
*Also, Marlon Brando “was” a famous actor, not “is” a famous actor, as he died last year.

TRACK INFO: - Released August 1985
- Went top three (unbelievably) and spent eleven weeks on the countdown.

- MC FACT ATTACK: - Kate Bush’s new album is due out on November 7th.. twelve years after her last one. I don’t know much by her I’ll admit, but if it’s half as dull as this track then she shouldn’t bother.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - From September 85’s number one album “Hounds Of Love”... uh oh uh oh oh uh oh! (etc)..

Today's Transcript:

Kate Bush Running Up That Hill - Kate Bush is mates with Peter Gabriel, who used to be in Genesis - Genesis is one of the chapters in the Bible - The Bible is the one book that you’ll find in a hotel room, because the gideons put it into the drawer next to the bed - “Bedshaped” by Keane was taken from their album “Hopes And Fears” - If you add “Tears For” to the front of Fears you get “Tears For Fears”, who consisted of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith - Curt Smith shares the same christian name as Kurt Russell, who’s the other half of Goldie Hawn, whose daughter Kate Hudson is married to Chris Robinson from The Black Crowes - The Black Crowes’ 1992 album “Southern Harmony And Musical Companion” featured the fantastic track “Remedy” - A remedy is what a doctor might give you and is not dissimilar to a cure - The Cure had a 1986 hit with “Boys Don’t Cry” - “Cry” is a word associated with wolf - Wolf was one of the Gladiators - Gladiators was hosted by John Fashanu, who also appeared in the jungle in “I’m A Celebrity...”, which was hosted by Ant and Dec - Ant and Dec are from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne - and Newcastle-Upon-Tyne is where we’ll be beginning the thirteen mile half marathon that is The Great North Run this Sunday, as we navigate the “long and winding road” to South Shields - Which links us to The Beatles and The Long And Winding Road.

Tedious Facts:

- SEAMLESS?: - Of course... not:
*Genesis is like a book, not a chapter in the Bible or something. Dave said “it’s a component part. Fact.” (good enough for me).
*A remedy is a treatment not a cure apparently.
*Also (spotted by me), Curt Smith and Kurt Russell only share the same name phonetically, which Dave didn’t point out. Thanks.

TRACK INFO: - Released N/A (Only by Gareth Gates & Will Young.. *murdered*).
- N/A

- MC FACT ATTACK: - There is no fact cos its after midnight and I’m bored to death of looking for facts. Fact.
- ALBUM DETAILS: - The final track on the November 2000 Beatles compilation “1”... probably like the greatest CD compilation ever. That’s it.
