Hmmm - I think I would have liked her success. I've been singing all my life and even in the time when I was getting paid to do it I was never going to "make it to the big time" - it wouldn't be true to say that she doesn't have anything I would like because I know back then I would have loved to have thought I could be successful. But I'm not really the envious type, I know lots of people who have more "stuff" than I do and I'm thankful that my response to that tends usually to be "good on them" rather than "why not me?" It wouldn't half make life uncomfortable if I was the jealous type, given the lives of some of my best friends compared to mine.

It just annoys me that there are thousands of singers out there - some of whom she will be paying a pittance to sing backing vocals at her gigs and on her records to make HER sound good - who are so much more talented than she is, yet everyone is fawning over her just because she has utilised a few vocal tricks which people think are cute. Its not a new scenario and she didn't invent it, she's just the latest perpetrator!

But much of life is about being in right place at right time. Sure there are 1000's of better singers than Ellie, but what good is that to dwell on?! She sings well enough, and is perfectly easy on the eye..... Indifference would be more understandable than dislike.

I'm sticking with jealousy theory. :D

It makes me angry though, when people get a reputation for being good at something that they are basically at best pretending to do. She isn't a good singer. Neither are lots of successful pop artists, but at least they are mostly just doing what they do and not pretending to be "real" singers. She is, and it annoys me a lot.

Out of interest, who do you call a 'real' singer ?

I think Ellie is a naturally pretty woman and has a lovely voice and the ability to sing live, unlike some so-called singers.

Of course there are Tim, I think that's pretty much what I just said! And I don't specifically dislike her for it any more than I do any of the others - all I have said here is that I don't buy in to the "Ellie Goulding is brilliant" hype because I don't think she is, and that I think she bears a passing resemblance to a sheep. A pretty sheep, but a sheep.

Actually, in terms of singers whom I do actively dislike, there are a few obvious ones on the list WAY above Ellie Goulding. I mean, don't even get me started on Joss Stone, and as for Mariah Carey, just don't ask!

I'm not really a singer at all any more. My last proper gig was for the Milennium celebrations just before the end of 1999 and I stopped teaching about four years ago.

Interesting question. Sam Browne. Ruby Turner. Adele. Jessie J can sing, although she doesn't make it obvious. Pink has a great voice even if she seems only to use it for special occasions. Christine Aguilera is incredible. Maddy Bell. Dusty Springfield. Singers with strong voices which they don't have to fiddle about with in order to make them interesting. I suppose I am "old school"........well, old.

Dolly Parton!

bmstinton93 wrote:Well Elton John certainly likes her version of it. As do many other people including Prince William and Catherine Middleton

I don't understand what that has to do with anything.

I love Dolly Parton - she hasn't got the best voice in the world but its better than a lot, but she is one of the best songwriters ever. That's real talent, writing songs is something I really do wish I could do.

Cheesy though it is, I Will Always Love You is one of mine.......oh yes, Whitney Houston was an incredible singer. Not sure if she still is or not, but she was.

Freddie Mercury.

I think that picture of Ms Goulding is one of the unflattering ones. I can't really comment on her singing as most modern singers sound like they're 'adjusted' to me.

Ellie Goulding has done a good version of that as well

I haven't heard it but I can imagine how she might do it. I'll have a look see if I can find it to listen to anywhere and see if I was right!

Thank god you never said Cheryl Cole.

Agree with you on most of your choices .. Adele, Pink and most of the oldies but feel Ellie is above many of the 'pop type singers'.

I saw her sing live on some chat show a while back and she is amazing.. put's a lot of feeing into singing.

Margarita Pracatan puts a lot of feeling into her singing but it doesn't make her good.

Edit: - No, I'm not saying Margarita Pracatan is better than Ellie Goulding, even I can accept that's not the case! Just making the point that an emotional performance doesn't necessarily indicate a massively high level of musical ability. While I'm at it, yes of course Ellie Goulding has a high level of musical ability. I just don't accept that she's as brilliant as she is being made out to be by the current industry hype.
