Of the older Doctors I can recommend the 2nd Doctor story "The Mind Robber", which is a wonderfully psychedelic 60's story set in a fairytale land (actually better than it sounds), the 5th Doctor story "The Caves Of Androzani" which is still to this day (IMO & that of quite a few Who fans) the best regeneration story ever, the 6th Doctor story "Revelation Of The Daleks" for the many great double acts (in a dramatic sense) and a great slimy turn by Clive Swift (Richard out of Keeping Up Apperances).

One thing I do wish had happened however was Eccleston continuing for longer than he did, don't get me wrong Tennat was very good in the role, however watching back Series 1 recently I re-realised (is that a word) what a great Doctor 9th was, unfortunately Eccleston has no interest in playing the role again in any shape or form :(

Yeah saw "The Mind Robber" and it was very funny when The Doctor had to put Jamie's face back together and got it wrong (surely you could tell it was wrong). The Caves Of Androzani was good but i don't get all the hype around it and Colin Baker's line at the end "change my dear and not a moment too soon" was odd..

The best couple of seconds of any story is from the Pertwee story "Day of the Daleks" (i think?) when he attacks an intruder and then takes a sip of wine without spilling a drop. Plus the Dalek voices are pretty poor in that one especially on the word co----or----din----ates which is quite funny.

Shame about Eccleston as i actually found (controversial opinion) that he was a better Doctor than Tennant.

The Mind Robber is one of my all time favourites because it is so different to most Who of the time, there's something rather Magical about it for me, in case you didn't already work it out (I imagine you already have of course) "The Master" in that story is nothing to do with The Master from Pertwee's time & onwards, it's just a coincidence. Caves is another of my favourites, I think the reason it's held in so high regard by the "experts" (I don't ever declare myself as one of these BTW, I'm a big fan of The Twin Dilemma, which is often considered one of the worst stories ever) is because all of Davison's stories before hand had been rather "nice" compared to this one & the fact that the lighting & direction by Graham Harper was spot on (my only criticism of Moffat's era is that he hasn't chosen Harper to direct any episodes so far since he's taken over from RTD), the line by Colin at the end is odd but I think it was kind of a "warning" of how different a Doctor he was going to be to Davison.

Yep it's Day of The Daleks, that is a very good scene as well, a quick karate move (or whatever martial art it was) and then back to the wine or port & cheese :) I actually prefer Death To The Daleks from the Pertwee era although my favourite surviving Dalek story from the classic era is Revelation of The Daleks, it just all seems to come together so well in that one & it's a rather dark story, sadly it was the penultimate story from the excellent Colin Baker (IMO of course).

I also agree with you regarding Tennant, don't get me wrong I like the 10th Doctor, however my criticism of him is that he's too human for the most part, sure Troughton is a "mad old uncle" at times, however he has an other worldly mystique about him which makes him so brilliant and all the more a shame that so much of his stuff was junked back in the 70's :(

The Ninth Doctor is excellent, I watched back "The Empty Child" (both parts) and "The Parting Of The Ways" (both parts) recently & Eccleston excelled, it's such a shame he only did one year and even more of a shame that he has said of recent that he won't ever reprise the role (either as a returning role, a la The Five Doctors or on the Big Finish Audios, if they ever get the licence for the modern series), I just hope Matt Smith is round for another two years at least, he's brilliant in the role & the most alien Doctor we've had since Tom Baker.

End of geekeyness

Last night's episode was excellent, the whole two parter was excellent actually (this is the first story this year I've watched, I haven't watched the other four properly, yet) and a great twist with that ending, I'll have to go back and watch the rest, this looks as if this has built on last years great series, especially in the scare stakes, I imagine quite a few children were genuinely hiding behind the sofa at some of that. 9/10

The series this year has been split in two, for two reasons, number 1 to avoid the mid season ratings slump (all series since it came back on air) and secondly in an experiment to see if the series can be split in two & be successful as they need to split it in two next year for the Olympics.

I hope it does, personally I hope the series does eventually get moved to the winter, from a selfish point of view during the spring/summer months I'm out a lot because of the nicer weather, as a consequence this year I haven't seen a single episode live, all have been taped & watched back, however in the autumn/winter months I don't go out nearly as much due to the crap weather.

I think they're seeing if the split will work because of next years Olympics, because they'll definitely have to take a break next year due to when the Olympics take place.

I liked most of the episode tonight until the end which i hated with a passion (first time that has happened with a Moffat episode) but the rest of the episode just about saved it. The whole idea was very obvious and you could work it out at literally one minute into the episode when shown the babies name.

Right so why did the Baby in the Space suit kill the Doctor in the first episode then?

Oh I see, the start of her life is the end of his, and all the other crap is in reverse?

Except last night he was with her as an Infant, and as a fairly hot, might I add, MILF.

I don't know why I ask really when I can accept a statue that only moves when you are not looking at it!

I think - maybe - the Flesh Doctor is going to be intrinsic to all this? But I have to say that for me, the excessive convolution is spoiling my enjoyment of it somewhat now. Its gone too far to be able to be satisfactorily tidied up, and for me, it needs to have a good, clear and satisfactory ending. I don;t think that's going to be possible now. Also, I don't like the Doctor's new fallibility. The enjoyment of Dr Who is in knowing - absolutely KNOWING - that he is in control of whatever is going on, and however messy it gets he will prevail - I think that's been lost. I don't feel as though I can trust him any more, like I could Ecclestone and Tennant.

Just watched the last episode in this run. I think its been a brilliant series, and that was a great ending. Granted you could figure it out before the end but I think the whole idea of having a more developed background story means that you end up having less 'filler' episodes.

As for who actually kills the doctor, and if they do actually kill him, in episode 1 of the latest series, I think there may be a twist to that because why would the young River kill the Doctor? Unless as Yudster said, maybe that is the 'flesh' doctor.
(And also if that young child could regenerate, how does river die in the episode from a previous series?)

Also the BBC continues to make a cracking show that brings in a monumental worldwide audience and, of course, huge pay cheque for the beeb.

Just my two cents! Now I'm off to re-suspend my disbelief.

I just re-read my last post and it sounds like I didn't enjoy it - I really did. I'm just a bit worried that when it all pans out I won't be able to follow what's going on!

Yuds in all honesty I didn't get that permission from you at all, you should go onto Gallifrey Base, even though over 80% liked the episode (giving it an 8/10) the majority of the posts in the thread are from the same small handful of arseholes who never stop moaning about the current team and have a go at anyone who has declared it their best episode.

I remember now, after visiting that section yesterday & today as to why I stay out of the new series area, just not worth it.

 To be honest I don't really visit that much any more either, to be honest considering some of the bile they come out with on there I really can't be asked any more, it's only a sodding TV show however to some it's like a sodding religion

I have NO idea what is going on. Why were there Cybermen?

Weird aliens, running along corridors and EXTERMINATE. That's all. There's too much fannying about.

Thing you got to remember is that this is Part 1 of 2, part 2 returns sometime in the Autumn, I think the grand plan is to then have all future series broadcasting in the winter months, when most people are indoors due to weather, etc. rather than in the spring/summer months when most are out (I didn't watch any on broadcast this year round as I was out every Saturday when it was on so watched it back on DVD).

Disapointed to read there will be less episodes of Dr Who next year because Moffatt is busy writing Sherlock - I would have thought it is a flagship programme for the Beeb, both here and around the world

The Sherlock rumour was a load of old bobbins, the BBC exec who came out with that was joking (although a bit of a naughty joke considering what a volatile bunch of sods some Who fans can be)

I think the plan is to have the show broadcast in the winter months like the series did back when Tom Baker was The Doctor, reason being more people are in during the winter months than the summer months. From what I understand 2013 (the 50th Anniversary year) will have even more episodes than this year or next.

14 more episodes have been commissioned anyway, just that we have to wait a little longer for Series 7, in the meantime I'll watch some old 11th, 6th, 4th or 2nd Doctor stories for a Doctor Who fix during the drought next year.
