Not quite sure how we'll judge if subsequent singles were 'hits' but hey, it's no fun without controversy :D

The Wannadies - You & Me Song

And surely it should go down to chart positions, as to whether they are 'hits' or not?

My choice this time round:

Third Eye Blind - Semi-Charmed Life - September 1997 - Number 37 (surprisingly, I remember this one been played a lot & thought it charted higher than this)

Absolute pain trying to find a list of One Hit Wonders, wonkypedia declares they're only a "one hit wonder" if they made number 1 (no that's bollocks, anything in the top 40 is considered a hit) and another site had artists in there as one hit wonders when they actually had 3-5 hits.

I wouldn't automatically assume a one hit wonder had been number 1 but at least the top 10. Also any following tracks not charting as high as the song in question. But as stated, this is just my personal opinion.

It's hard to fully determine, in the UK a song get's mentioned as a hit if it gets in the top 40, however it has been noted in the past if a track fails to make the "Top 75" so I'm a bit unsure as to what fully makes a hit, I assume it's safe to say that any song in the Top 40 is a hit.

Actually I think we should throw this open to John22 (sorry John) what are the limitations on this, I'm not trying to make this deliberately complicated but there's several artists/groups who are famous for having one hit & are considered to be one hit wonders and yet had several more tracks although these charted between 21-40, are these still considered one hit wonders or not?

As I say I'm not deliberately trying to make this complicated but I was looking for several artists/groups who I thought were one hit wonders in the UK with a top 10-20 hit, however they released 2-4 more tracks, of which of those the next highest was 25 & the other two were in the high 30's.

I know there are loads that I've loved, but because they were one hit wonders I can't remember the damn things! This was mentioned by someone a while back and I love it thought - Althea and Donna, Uptown top Rankin

I am going for MC hammer - hammer time if acceptable. I know he had other songs....but not hits. So he was a one hit wonder. Will add video later

Funnily this is the only song I would consider a one hit wonder, apart for Hanson & HMMbop

Vanessa Paradi and Joe le Taxi.... She had a kind of charm for a young lad!

It is tricky. The first one I thought of was Babylon Zoo - Spaceman, but turns out he had two follow-up singles which reached 17 and 32, just cos I don't remember them doesn't mean they don't qualify as hits.

I'm assuming you mean U Can't Touch This, but he definitely doesn't qualify, he had a further seven top 20 hits:

8 - MC Hammer Have You Seen Her Oct 1990
8 - MC Hammer Pray Dec 1990
15 - MC Hammer Here Comes The Hammer Feb 1991
16 - MC Hammer Yo! Sweetness Jun 1991
20 - MC Hammer (Hammer Hammer) They Put Me In The Mix Jul 1991
4 - MC Hammer Addam's Groove Dec 1991
14 - MC Hammer Don't Pass Me By

Even I remember the first two!

Nicola_Red wrote:Oh and everyhit.com have a true list of one hit wonders that reached no1 at http://www.everyhit.com/record1.html - although admittedly not updated since 2009.

Excellent link Pixie Lott was the last one they removed from the link, plus it also explains as to why certain artists aren't one hit wonders and that a top 40 entry is a hit (I imagine the Top 75 is an old thing then that some still refer to).

Everyhit is a good site (even if they don't list anything from 41-75, however they don't seem to have added anything for this year, I wonder if they've permanently stopped updating the site?

Possibly but according to everyhit.com:

One-Hit Wonders
These are artists who had one number one single and have been involved in no other hit. ("Hit" here meaning a Top 40 placing).
Artists marked * have experienced some further success outside the Top 40

But you can be a one hit wonder if you haven't got a number one so that's kinda stupid. Angels by Robbie Williams never got number one and that is still a massive hit

Oh yeah I agree, you can do so (Sash holds the record for five consecutive number 2 places but no number 1's), Wikipedia deem a one hit wonder to be someone who has only had a number 1 hit but I agree that's bollocks, what I'm getting at is an artist who only has one hit that may get to number 27 for example is still a one hit wonder.

Yeah, it is a shame that everyhit seem to have stopped updating. It's just the sort of geeky factual stuff that I love.

I think maybe 'one top 20 hit and then nothing else inside the top 20' would be a good middle-ground definition of a one hit wonder, but it's John22's decision.

Hmm, another controversial choice, but I'd argue that this counts (they did have another top 30 hit, but let's face it, nobody remembers it):

Apologies for the dodgy vesion, but I can't find the official video for the Norman Cook remix.

Gotta be faithful to the Lesta massive!
