Because she seems to be singing to girls, which would mean that they should be putting rings on chaps, which doesn't make sense (I'm assuming though that I've not heard the bit where she starts talking to chaps).

Nope, she's singing to chaps all the way thru, except for the "single ladies, put your hands up" line - specifically to an ex. Sample lines:

"we just broke up...another brother noticed me...you had your turn, now you're gonna learn what it really feels like to miss me...if ya liked it, then you shoulda put a ring on it...I couldn't care less what you think...say I'm the one you want, if you don't you'll be alone and I'll be gone..." and so on.

And so we can conclude: if you like it, put a ring on it. I believe I'll take an A in Beyonce Lyrics Analysis now, please.

And anyway, I'm planning to propose to my boyfriend! *pout* What's wrong with girls proposing to guys?

I think its highly sexist.... Can you imagine if Dizzee had released a track, "if you like it then you shoulda knelt down n gobbled it'. There would be outrage! :D

Are you seriously comparing proposing marriage to 'gobbling it'?

Oh, I have no judgement on methods of proposal. My ex proposed to me in the traditional down on one knee with big diamond sparkler fashion, and that didn't work out. And I didn't write the Beyonce song, after all. I was just questioning the allegory!

Well they both involve getting on your knee's, a little bit of begging and pleading and sometimes moisture rolling down your cheek.

There you are see, I thought she was hollering-back to all the single ladies and all the single ladies only.

I didn't realise it was all about bondage ;)

'If ya liked it then you should have pretended you were knocked up and blackmailed him' isn't quite as catchy....
