I've downloaded your file (thanks for uploading that by the way). But in the meantime, I tried downloading today's show using the standard getiPlayer program (no VBR web or anything, because that won't run anyway). It downloaded the show, and finished by creating an aac file. But when I tried opening it in Sound Forge, it actually worked (I'm sure it hasn't worked in the past), and it opened it as an m4a.

So to be honest, I think I might just keeps things as they are for now (for as long as it's works at least!), and then if anything stops working again for some reason, I'll replace my folder with yours.

The only minor gripe I have with getiplayer, or at least with the show I downloaded today, is it seems more compressed than the last Radio Downloader show I downloaded. You can see it in the waveform, it seems like the quieter bits are beefed up a bit. Unless they've changed it at the iPlayer end. Anyway, I'm sure it'll sound fine on the mp3 player.

Incidentally, I first tried downloading today's show using Radio Downloader, and it was taking ages again (a bad sign), and then once it finished converting, it started downloading again (there was no file there). So who knows what's going on there.

Since the BBC blocked MP3 downloads for browsers that can't sign with an Apple SSH/SSL/thing, all of these downloaders have had to download the AAC version.

Here's how I understand how they work:

get_iplayer downloads the AAC and remuxes it (losslessly) to an M4A (iTunes compliant file). You get exactly what was streamed from the BBC iPlayer.

Radio Downloader downloads the AAC and recodes it to an MP3. You get a recode that is lossy (this is bad thing and why it takes so long) and therefore slightly lower quality than what was streamed from the BBC iPlayer. Depending on whether you have "Golden Ears" and/or good/bad equipment, you may not notice any difference.

Ah ok that explains a few things. And as for ears and equipment, I'm a sound engineer so I hope I have good ears and equipment, otherwise I'm in trouble! To be honest though, when it comes to the Moyles shows, I'm not too bothered about the quality, just as long as I can hear them clearly. After all, they are just messing around and and having a laugh most of the time.

Yeah mine seems to have worked as well thanks. I'm keeping that zipped folder backed up now for future reference. One question I do have about get_iplayer though is what all the live BBC TV and streaming is all about on there? Also, do you use the metadata option and is there any difference each of them? Mine is set to freevo atm.

You used to be able to stream live to TV to apps like VLC, but that doesn't seem to work any more. I didn't do anything with the metadata settings.

You need to do a refresh. I grabbed it at 11:44am.
Get_iplayer won't do an auto refresh unless a certain amount of time has elapsed since the last one (not sure what that duration is).

What do you mean by a refresh? I'm using the normal getiplayer program, not the VBR web thing (that doesn't work right now). So I use the "get_iplayer --type=radio moyles" command. I've tried closing the window and opening it again, but still no luck.

There is a refresh cache button on the main screen of the PVR Manager, that should do it I think

Oh well, GetiPlayer can see today's show now at last. I just hope it makes it m4a again.

Nope, back to square one again. "rtmpdump.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close". And getiplayer is now retrying recording over and over again (probably endlessly, although now it's trying to record it to wma). So I can't run PVR Manager at all, and GetiPlayer eventually has the rtmpdump error. And this is trying with Neil's folder, and with my folder.

Starting to look like someone else might have to start downloading/editing/uploading the current Moyles shows at this rate. The only other option for me is to record a 3.5hr show in real time, but I can't do that every day.

I would suggest nuking your install from orbit with Revo uninstaller or similar, then delete the whole get_iplayer folder, run all Windows updates, install the normal get_iplayer install again and copy my folder over. I had problems on one of my PCs with it not working, and using my folder from the other machine worked.

And thanks for the offer, but it seems daft for you to have to download and then upload each show, only for me to download that, edit it, and then upload it again...I've reinstalled all the GetiPlayer programs again and I am 75% through, so fingers crossed this one works. If not then I'll have to uninstall everything and reinstall everything again. Or just record the whole show from iPlayer overnight...

Audacity will open it. You may have to download ffmpeg for audacity first though

Hmm. Audacity does open it, but when playing it back, it's 8 only seconds long, and obviously sped up by a huge amount. I think I might just play it in Quicktime Player, while recording it into Reaper. It'll take 3.5 hrs, but at least it'll work.

If get_iplayer is set up correctly, it should remux the flv twice so it becomes an .m4a and then scan it again to tag it. These operations are fast.

You should end up with an .m4a that iTunes can open, will play on an iPod, and also play in VLC etc.

Btw what ipod do you have cause these .m4a's play fine on my itunes but when loaded onto both of my 5th generation ipod videos they play for about 5 seconds then just makes a whirring noise on the hard drive then resets the ipod

Those clockwork iPods have trouble with these?

I'm playing them on a 2G Nano and 1G iPod Touch -- note that this is using a relatively new build of get_iplayer that supports the double remuxing to create the Apple-compliant .m4a.
