Tbf though I didn't know any of them either and I like U2 but wouldn't call myself a fan.

I've always thought that when Chris has referred to 'the U2 competition', it was the one that they had on Afternoons in the early 2000s. It was a proper competition with a very good U2-related prize. The contestants had to identify a track from a description (it may have been a musical clip though).....and the answer was Where the Streets Have No Name. I do remember postmen being involved in the clues ( referring to streets without names). It certainly went on for a good 20 minutes...i remember having to pull the car over for a long period 'cos i was laughing too much.
