The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

In my eyes it's not the fault of Radio 1. We just seem to be going through a bit of a 'bleh' period in pop music. Bar a few there doesn't seem to be any songs out that'll be thought of as classics in 10-20 years or so. There's hardly any decent indie tracks around anymore for one.

Example for instance. I like him, but his songs tend to sound pretty similar. Same with the likes of Nero.

Likes from the playlist:
Calvin Harris - Feel So Close
Sak Noel - Loca People
Blink-182 - Up All Night

Dislikes:
Jay-Z and Kanye - Otis
Jason Derulo - It Girl
Cee Lo Green - Cry Baby

Favourites on the A list are Ed Sheeran, Foo Fighters and Olly Murs. That's the first Olly Murs song I've liked. Least favourites are Bruno Mars, Jason Derulo and Rihanna.

B list favourites are Miles Kane, Aloe Blacc and Ben Howard, least favourites Cee Lo Green, Leona Lewis and Kreayshawn.

Generally speaking I do like the music Radio 1 play, but they do have to appeal to a whole spectrum of tastes so they will never please everyone.

I know it's only supposed to be three likes and dislikes but my particular likes and dislikes are:

Likes:

Snow Patrol - Called Out In The Dark
The Saturdays - All Fired Up
Florence And The Machine - What The Water Gave Me
Sak Noel - Loca People
Joe Goddard - Gabriel

Dislikes:

Dappy - No Regrets
Cee Lo Green - Cry Baby
Jason DeRulo - It Girl
Lady Gaga - You and I (If anyone else released that song it wouldn't have got anywhere near the R1 playlist. Used to really like Gaga but since Born This Way, everything she has released has been poor)
Foo Fighters - Arlandria (Dreadful, soft rock pap)

You make a good point here. It would appear that the playlist isn't actually based on the music but on the singer/group. Pretty poor show really.

Love the occasional Abba song, courtesy of the David Walliams Thames Swim.

Perhaps it could replace McFly day, at half past eight (abba state - say it quickly - please humour me!). No it won't clash with the 8.30 news, that's always around about 8.34 :D

I'm quite surprised to see the level of anti-Gaga feeling, I LOVE You & I. I love the Jay-Z & Kanye track too.

Being primarily a metal fan, I always expect Radio 1 playlist music to be stuff I'm not really into, so beyond that I think I just categorise it all as 'chart pop' (or maybe vaguely indie or dance, but it all sort of merges into one 'radio friendly' genre). I must be pretty good at mentally tuning out the music cos 95% of the time it doesn't bother me, and I never feel the need to turn the radio down or over when they're playing music.

Same for me - every now and again a whopper gets through, like that Cher Lloyd tripe, or those weird pervert songs, but in the main I think I wander off or more likely concentrate more on something else when they stop talking.

I do remember there being more songs I'd actually like though, but I guess that's how things go.

I think what I find frustrating about Radio 1's music policy is that the artist and whether they're "credible" or "relevant" seems to be more important than the song itself.

Noel Gallagher's new stuff has been completely ignored by Radio 1 - I would guess because he's now regarded as being more of a Radio 2 artist. Yet a lot of my friends who are in their early 20's really like AKA...What A Life, and it's not on the playlist. It's a shame because he's always a really good guest whenever he's on with Chris. James Morrison is probably 'more Radio 2' than NG yet he gets his song onto the A-list??!

Strange too how despite it selling bucketloads, Maroon 5's Move Like Jagger also never made it onto the playlist. It's been one of the best sellers of the year and it's been totally ignored by Radio 1.

I'm just fed up of hearing those Teen Awards and Summer of live music ads they keep playing between songs.

Spot on, Radio 1 care more about cool and relevant, they care more about who it is then if the song is any good. I agree with your example Noel's track is brilliant, yet Radio 1 have just blanked him like he no longer exists. Look at The Pigeon Detectives, new album and single out a couple of months back, only heard it once, they seem to of been ignored like they have had there day, and so on to the next up and coming new band, give it a couple of years then they will be disregarded and so on, yet they will play U2 or Madonna!!!!, makes no sense

A bit of Beady Eye wouldn't have gone amiss either this year, but I have to disagree about Noel - although actually I'll reserve judgement til I've heard his whole album, but going by 'Death of you and me' it is indeed pure Radio 2 territory.

To be fair, the Pigeon Detectives' first album should have been ignored.

Ok, maybe that was a bad example. The point was new bands get a lot of hype get there music played for a certain amount of time, maybe a couple of albums and then boom ignored just like that even if there still going or not and on to the next band to big up etc. Although I feel bands seem to be treated second rate compared to pop/dance anyway.

I think I have to agree with whoever said it's more about the artist and what's cool than the songs etc because by God, some of the songs on the playlist are pure pish! And it seems to me that there doesn't go a week without a new Rihanna track. Girl puts out as much songs and collaborations as David Guetta it seems and I used to like her but can't stand her now since her songs are everywhere.

If it wasn't for Colin Murray's Late Night Friday Show on Radio Ulster, I would never have heard Noel Gallagher's song, which from first listen, is not bad and is certainly better than the majority of songs the R1 playlist has.

I am glad they don't play Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5 because I find that song kind of annoying and partly because I never liked The Rolling Stones. Plus, it's played to death on local stations here during the all-night playlists etc.

I am always amazed by how little I have to do to remind myself how God-awfully shite local radio is. I was in a taxi this week, and Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol was on. It could've also been Smooth FM, which, if you're gonna listen to that, your brain may aswell have given up on life, at least Radio 2 makes an effort.

But yeah, all music should have a listen-by-date. Then in 20 years songs can make a revival cos you haven't heard them for ages - and quite rightly so.

All credit goes to Dave for picking out obscure songs from yesteryear on the tedious link. It's better that nobody knows what to expect.

Felt the need to resurrect this thread after my ears were subjected yet again to that noise (I refuse to call it a track) by Skrillex whilst I was happily dozing in bed this morning. It's an absolutely horrific sound at any time of the day, but they really need to stop playing it during the first hour, when a lot of people must be waking up and the last thing they need to hear is that kind of racket.

I'm aware that using the phrase 'that kind of racket' makes me sound about as old as Beryl or Bertha, but I think it's an appropriate one to use in this case, as there is no way in hell that something that sounds like my toddler niece randomly and repeatedly pressing all the buttons on one of her horrible electronic toys should be described as music.

Rant over. I'll refrain from mentioning some of the other current crap on the R1 playlist that's driving me mad.

i dont think this is really a debate that has a definitive answer , as music is entirely opinion. you cant please everyone. i happen to like that Skrillex track for example , very creative.

in 40 years time , this generation will be writing on a forum about how rubbish music is "nowadays" , and how we long for the 'decent' music of 2012. 'when djs played on proper computers , not this new virtual reality bollocks'

i fleet between Radio 1 , Radio 2 and 6music quite easily , but thats just me.

I flick between R1 and R2, and the difference between their playlists for me is that I never feel the need to turn off R2 because a particular song is being played, where as I often do with R1. I can let the songs played on R2 that I don't like wash over me, but some on R1 (Skrillex being a prime example) send me diving for the off button because they make my ears bleed.

I loved Chris's joke about a buggered-up CD player which can't play properly skipping over a CD and "Skrillexing it". That was a big juicy LOL.
