Technotronic featuring Felly, Pump Up The Jam

Today's Transcript:

'Jump' was also the title of a hit by Van Halen in 1984. 1984 was also the year that the Olympics were held in Los Angeles and the title of a novel by George Orwell. If you swap the 'George' part of 'George Orwell' for 'River' you get the River Orwell, which flows into the North Sea at Ipswich. Ipswich are a football club who play at Portman Road. Portman, first name Natalie, is a film actress who was in 'No Strings Attached'. 'No strings attached' would be a bad thing to read on the packet if you'd just bought a kite. A kite is good to have at the beach on a breezy day, as is a windsurfer. A windsurfer is a crucial piece of equipment in windsurfing, as is a wetsuit. A wetsuit makes most people look like a badly packed bit of black pudding. Black pudding is something you might see on a breakfast buffet, as are croissants and jam. If you had jam on draught you'd be able to ask the dispenser to 'pump up the jam', which links to Technotronic and 'Pump Up The Jam'.

Flaws:

Dave wasn't quite right on the River Orwell; it does broaden into an estuary at Ipswich, but actually flows into the North Sea at Felixstowe, after joining with the River Stour at Shotley.

Nirvana, Come As You Are

Today's Transcript:

Jam is very difficult to get off your jeans if your toast lands in your crotch. A crotch shouldn't be mistaken for a crutch, which is what you might need to use as a walking aid if your leg was injured or in plaster. A good plasterer is hard to find, which is why they tend to be quite expensive. Expensive is the opposite of cheap, while 'cheep' is the noise made by a bird. A bird is what you'd be if you'd just got on a bus in Hull. Hull is one of two cities I've visited in the last 36 hours, the other being Plymouth. Plymouth Argyll play their home matches at Home Park ground. 'Ground Force' is the show that first made popular Charlie Dimmock, who's now on '71 Degrees North', which is hosted by Paddy McGuinness. Paddy McGuinness lives round the corner from Peter Kay, which means that he can pop round for a brew anytime he wants. If Paddy was going round to Peter's for a cup of tea he probably wouldn't have to worry about dressing up as Peter would say "come as you are", which links to Nirvana and 'Come As You Are'.

Coolio featuring LV, Gangsta's Paradise

Today's Transcript:

Nirvana were formed in Seattle, which is a city where people like to drink coffee. 'Coffee & TV' was a hit for Blur, whose frontman Damon Albarn went on to create Gorillaz, who are made up of cartoony things. 'Things Can Only Get Better' was the best-known single by D:Ream. Ream is a word associated with paper, which is made from trees. Trees are a provider of oxygen, as they have something to do with photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is something you learn about in biology. 'Biology' was a record by Girls Aloud, who are currently inactive, a bit like Mount Etna. Mount Etna is in Italy, where they eat a lot of pasta. Pasta is rolled out using a machine or a rolling pin. Pins are what you have to knock down during ten-pin bowling, which is very popular in America. America is where Coolio is from, which links to Coolio and 'Gangsta's Paradise'.

Flaws:

Dave was typically vague on trees and photosynthesis. The way it works is thus: trees have leaves that are able to use the energy of sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into chemical compounds such as sugars. As a by-product of that chemical reaction, oxygen is given off. That chemical reaction is a building-up or synthetic reaction and is driven by light, so it is called photosynthesis. (Like Dave, I didn't pay much attention in biology class at school; I learned this from the science section at the Highlights Kids website.)

Bass-o-Matic, Fascinating Rhythm

Today's Transcript:

Coolio was in last year's 'Ultimate Big Brother' along with Chantelle Houghton, who is now going out with Alex Reid, who is famous for being the ex of Jordan. Jordan has kids with Peter Andre, whose biggest hit was 'Mysterious Girl'. Mysterious is a word you might associate with an unsolved crime and a detective like Frost or Marple. Marple is a town in Cheshire, not far from Stockport. Stockport is where David Dickinson is from, and he's a big name in the world of antiques. Antiques hopefully get more valuable with age. 'Age' rhymes with 'beige', which is, I think, the most boring colour. Colours are what you associate with a rainbow, which is something you see when there is sunshine on a rainy day. 'Sunshine On A Rainy Day' was a hit for Zoe, and was released originally in 1990. 1990 is also the year that Bass-o-Matic had their only hit, which links to Bass-o-Matic and 'Fascinating Rhythm'.

Flaws:

The Wonderstuff, The Size Of A Cow

Today's Transcript:

'Rhythm and blues' is abbreviated to R&B, although these days R&B has nothing to do with the blues. Blues and twos is a colloquial term that refers to any kind of emergency vehicle that involves a siren. A siren is generally combined with flashing lights so that people can hear and see them coming. 'Coming Around Again' was a hit for Simon Webb. A web is something that is spun by a spider. Spiders are something that Aled is terrified of, and he proved this during our face your fears week. Fears can be overcome by hypnosis, which is an area that Paul McKenna deals in. Deals are what you hope to get if you're out shopping, as everybody loves a bargain. A bargain bin is where you might find discounted CDs or books. Books are what you'd find in a library, and a library is a good place to go if you have a thirst for knowledge and just wonder stuff, which links to The Wonderstuff and 'The Size of A Cow'.

The Libertines, Don't Look Back Into The Sun

Today's Transcript:

The size of a cow is how you might describe a fat horse. A fat horse is not what you want to be riding in the Grand National, as the chances are it would probably come last. If you swap the first letter of 'last' for an 'M' you get 'mast', which is the part of a ship that the sail hangs off. A sale of a different type is what people queue up for on Boxing Day. Boxing day has nothing to do with boxing, and is probably a day of rest for people who spend their lives in the ring. Ring is what your phone does when somebody's trying to get hold of you. 'You and Me Song' was a big hit for the Wannadies, who were from Sweden. Sweden has produced quite a few famous people, such as all of Abba and Ulrika Jonsson. Ulrika Jonsson started her career in the field of weather, so in that respect shares something in common with Dominic Byrne. Burn is what you don't want to do with your sausages if you're cooking them on a barbecue. If you were at a barbecue with sunlight behind you it would be best if you didn't look back into the sun, which links to The Libertines and 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun'.

Journey, Don't Stop Believin'

Today's Transcript:

The sun can be harmful, which is why you should always apply suncream to prevent burning. Burning is what you don't want your sausages to be on a barbecue. The barbecue is a popular method of cooking in Australia, where their weather is more suited to outdoor eating. If you add the letters 'B' and 'L' to 'eating' you get 'bleating', which is a noise associated with sheep. The singular and plural form of the word 'sheep' are the same, and another example of this is 'fish'. Eating a lot of fresh fish is good for the brain. The brain does all the thinking in the human body. 'Body of Evidence' was a film starring Madonna, who was also in 'Desperately Seeking Susan'. Susan is a name that you don't hear given to kids much these days, a bit like Clive. 'Clive' rhymes with 'drive', which is one way of taking a journey, which links to Journey and 'Don't Stop Believin''.

Reef, Place Your Hands

Today's Transcript:

'Don't Stop Believin'' is probably the best-known song from the TV show 'Glee'. Glee shouldn't be mistaken for ghee, which is clarified butter used in Indian cookery. Indian cookery involves a lot of spices. Spices were brought back from the East by sailors and stuff, who introduced them to the West. West is the direction you'd need to drive in if you wanted to travel from London to Bristol. Bristol is where Justin Lee Collins is from, and he's a man with facial hair. Facial hair looks better on men than women. Women make up exactly 50% of the population, except in Nottingham where there's more women than men, which possibly dates back to when the city was famous for it's lace-making. Lace is used on stuff like knickers and bras, which look better on women than men. If you add the letters 'T' and 'A' to 'man' you get 'manta', as in mantaray, which is the sort of thing you might see if you were scuba-diving around the Great Barrier Reef , which links to Reef and 'Place Your Hands'.

Flaws:

According to the most recent statistics available, women actually make up 51% of the global population - Dave has made this same mistake before. However, I could find no statistics to confirm or refute his assertion regarding Nottingham.

Sub Sub featuring Melanie Williams, Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)

Today's Transcript:

'Place your hands on your head' is what you might hear if you were being arrested for something serious in America. 'America' was a hit for Razorlight, who are fronted by Johnny Borrell. Johnny Borrell shares almost the same surname as Paul Burrell, who will be appearing in a forthcoming series of 'Celebrity Coach Trip'. 'Trip hazard' is something you might see written on a sign in a studio that contains a lot of cables or wires. 'Wires' was a big hit for Athlete, while athlete is how you would describe Usain Bolt. Bolt-cutters are what you need to get into a fenced-off area that is protected by a padlock. If you swap the 'lock' bit of 'padlock' for the word 'Thai' you get a type of Oriental noodles that need to be treated with caution by those who suffer from a nut allergy. A nut allergy may involve the use of a big syringe. If you were describing the shape of a syringe you'd say it was tubular, like a submarine. The abbreviation for 'submarine' is 'sub', which links to Sub Sub and 'Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)'.

New Order, Blue Monday

Today's Transcript:

Sub Sub went on to become Doves. Doves are a symbol of peace, and white ones are often released into the air. Air's big hits include 'Sexy Boy'. 'Boy' was the first album from U2 and was released in 1980, making it 31 years old. 31 is a prime number, which means it's only divisible by itself and one. 'One' is a word used a lot by those with good breeding. Breeding is what some people do with dogs as it can make good money. 'Money Money Money' was a hit for Abba, who are from Sweden. In Sweden, most people own a sauna. A sauna is one of the few situations where it's socially acceptable to wear just a towel. A towel is somethinf you'd expect to find in a bathroom. Bathrooms need to be cleaned regularly, and if you always clean the loo on a Monday you might call it 'loo Monday'. If you add a 'B' to the front of 'loo Monday' you get 'blue Monday', which links to New Order and 'Blue Monday'.

Flaws:

Adding a 'B' to 'loo Monday' doesn't really make 'Blue Monday'. I'm also unsure about Dave's claim that 'most people' in Sweden own a sauna.

Wyclef Jean, Gone Til November

Today's Transcript:

New Order were an evolution from Joy Division. 'Joy' rhymes with 'soy', which is a sauce used in Chinese food. Chinese food consists of a lot of noodles and rice. Rice is grown in paddy fields, which need to be very wet. wet Wet Wet's hit 'Love Is All Around' was taken from the film 'Four Weddings And A Funeral'. Funeral For A Friend are a band from Bridgend. If you swap the last two letters of 'Bridgend' for a 'T' you get 'Bridget', as in Bridget Jones, who was played by Renee Zellwegger, who was also in 'Cold Mountain' with Nicole Kidman, who was in 'Dead Calm' with Billy Zane, who used to go out with Kelly Brook. Kelly Brook is from Kent, which is the county that contains Maidstone and Dover, which is famous for its white cliffs. If you say 'white cliffs' over and over really fast it sounds a bit like 'Wyclef', which links to Wyclef Jean and 'Gone Til November'.

Longpigs, On And On

Today's Transcript:

November is the month when we celebrate fireworks night, which is to do with Guy Fawkes, who tried to burn down the Houses of Parliament, but failed. 'Fail' is what you don't want to see written on an exam paper, as it would be a bad thing. 'Bad' was an album by Michael Jackson, and the follow-up to 'Thriller'. Thriller is a category of film, along with romance and action. 'Action' is what a director shouts on the set of a film. Film is what you used to have in your camera, but these days it's all digital. 'Digital Love' is by Daft Punk, who are from France. France offers a lot in terms of wine and art. Art is something you find all over the world, from Portsmouth to Papau New Guinea. Papau New Guinea is somewhere that cannibalism was still popular until recently. Cannibals used to call their dinner 'long pig', which links to The Longpigs and 'On And On'.

Flaws:

Apparently cannibalism may in fact still be popular today; the Korowai tribe of south-eastern Papua are reported to be one of the last surviving tribes in the world engaging in cannibalism. (Dave made this same reference just three months ago.)

Pink, God Is A DJ

Today's Transcript:

The Longpigs were from Sheffield, so in that respect share something in common with the Arctic Monkeys. Monkeys and humans share a lot of the same DNA. DNA were a dance music act who did a remix of 'Tom's Diner' by Suzanne Vega. Suzanne Vega shares the same surname as Ramon Vega, who is Swiss. 'Swiss' rhymes with 'Diss', which is a small town in Norfolk. Norfolk is home to the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth, where we once played crazy golf. Golf was invented in either Scotland or China, depending on which history you read. Read, first name Peter, used to play for Everton and England, who play Spain on Saturday in a friendly. Friendly Fires are mates with Greg James, who is a DJ. If God was a DJ you'd say 'God Is A DJ', which links to Pink and 'God Is A DJ''.

Flaws:

Texters claimed that Diss is in fact in Suffolk, but both Chris and I checked and Dave was definitely correct on this. On the topic of golf, apparently the most accepted golf history theory is that golf (as practiced today) originated from Scotland in the 12th century, with shepherds knocking stones into rabbit holes in the place where the famous Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews now sits. So we can give Dave that one too!

Arrested Development, Mr Wendal

Today's Transcript:

Pink was born Alecia Moore, so shares one name in common with Roger Moore, who played James Bond for years. If you remove the first letter of 'years' you get 'ears', which are very large on elephants. An elephant is too big for you to keep at home. 'Home is where the heart is' is a well-known catchphrase, like 'Rome wasn't built in a day'. 'Just A Day' was a hit for Feeder, who are fronted by Grant Nicholas, who's from Wales, like Tom Jones. Tom jones' singing career now spans about fifty years. Fifty years is half a century, because a century is made up of a hundred. A hundred is a good score if you're a batsman in cricket. Cricket is the sport that you'd associate with Ian Botham. Ian Botham has probably done a fair amount of public speaking over the years, which means he's no doubt good at making a speech. Speech is the name of one of the members of Arrested Development, which links to Arrested Development and 'Mr Wendal''.

Flaws:

Tom Jones recorded his first material in 1964, so he's not quite up to fifty years, but almost!

Arrested Development also had a big hit called 'Tennessee', which is the name of an American state that is home to Justin Timberlake. Justin Timberlake used to go out with Britney Spears. Britney Spears shouldn't be mistaken for broccoli spears, which you might find in a supermarket. Supermarket shopping is a bad idea when you're hungry, as you end up buying twice as much. 'Much' rhymes with 'hutch', which is like a house for a rabbit. 'Rabbit' is * slang for talking too much. 'Too Much Too Young' was a hit for The Specials, who were from Coventry. Coventry City used to play at Highfield Road but now play at the Ricoh Arena. Arena, first name Tina, had a hit called 'Chains' in 1994. 1994 is the year the World Cup was held in America, and America is where Green Day are from, which links to Green Day and 'Time Of Your Life ''.

Today's Transcript:

Green Day are made up of three members, and in that respect share something in common with the Sugababes. The Sugababes are taking a break at the moment, and will probably come back sometime in the new year. The new year is when lots of people join a gym, which they go to til about Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day last year was when Tina thought she started on the show, but it was actually the 15th. 15th is a good place to come on a list of the most annoying people at work. Work is what you have to do in order to earn money to pay the bills. 'Bills Bills Bils' was a hit for Destiny's Child, who were made up of Beyonce, Michelle and Kelly. Kelly Rowland is now a judge on 'X-Factor' along with Gary Barlow, Louis Walsh and Tulisa, and only the other day all of them except Tulisa were here. When you think of the word 'here' in the context of pop songs you think of 'Hear The Drummer (Get Wicked)', which links to Chad Jackson and 'Hear The Drummer (Get Wicked)'.

M&S Presents The Girl Next Door, Salsoul Nugget (If You Wanna)

Today's Transcript:

'Wicked' is a word often used to describe witches, like the one who was in 'The Wizard Of Oz', which also involves a yellow brick road. 'Yellow Brick Road' was a hit for Elton John, who is now a father with David Furnish. Furnish is what a designer would do to a hotel. An 'hotel de ville' in France is actually a town hall, which can be confusing for those who aren't in the know. 'Know Your Enemy' was a hit for Green Day, while 'Day And Night' was a hit for Kid Cudi. A kid is a term for a baby goat. Goat is eaten a lot in places like Africa, where it's an alternative to pork and turkey and stuff. Turkeys start to get worried at this time of year as Christmas is approaching. The greatest Christmas story is the story of baby Jesus, where his first visitors were the Three Wise Men, who brought frankincense, myrrh and gold. A small lump of gold is called a nugget, which links to M&S Presents The Girl Next Door and Salsoul Nugget (If You Wanna).

Flaws:

Today's Transcript:

M and S are the first and last letters of the word 'mask', which is what you might wear to go trick-or-treating. trick-or-treating originated in America, a bit like rock music. Amy Winehouse, Love Is A Losing Game

Today's Transcript:

Elbow performed at the Children in Need Rocks concert, which was amazing. Amazing is what you might say if you saw a cat that could drive an HGV. An HGV licence is what you need if you want to drive an articulated lorry, which the Americans call a big rig. A rig of a different type is somewhere you drill for oil. Oil affects inflation and global pricing, and has an effect on politics as well. Politics is something that both Tony Blair and David Cameron are into. 'Into The Groove' was a number one hit for Madonna. Madonna used to be married to Guy Ritchie, who directed 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels', which starred Vinnie Jones. Vinnie Jones has a Welsh dragon tattooed on his arm. Dragons breathe fire, which burns things, and if something gets burned it normally turns black. Dizzee Rascal, Fix Up Look Sharp

Today's Transcript:

Amy Winehouse collaborated with Mark Ronson, who spent a lot of his childhood in New York and London, which explains why he has that weird accent. There are all sorts of different accents, which affect the way a person speaks. If you remove the first letter of 'speaks' you're left with 'peaks', which you see a lot of in the Himalayas. The Himalayas contain the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. Mount Everest is very difficult to climb, and has claimed many lives over the years. Years seem to fly by these days, and it's nearly Christmas already. 'Ready For The Weekend' was a hit for Calvin Harris, who shares the same surname as Keith Harris, who is most famous for his work with Orville, the duck. Duck is what Peter Jones has to do when he walks through most doorways, cos he's so tall, and must get a bit dizzy up there. Somebody who's not tall enough to get dizzy is Dizzee Rascal, which links to Dizzee Rascal and 'Fix Up Look Sharp'.

Oasis, Slide Away

Today's Transcript:

Dizzee Rascal's real name is Dylan Mills, in the same way that Elton John's real name is Reg Dwight. Reg Dwight shares one name in common with Dwight Yorke, who used to go out with Katie Price, aka Jordan. Jordan is also a country in the Middle East, and is somewhere you should never go without a supply of suntan lotion. Suntan lotion often smells of coconuts, and coconuts can be dangerous if they fall out of a tree and hit you on the head, as they could kill you. 'Kill Bill' is a film starring Uma thurman, who has size eleven feet, which is really big for a girl. Girl power was the movement first pioneered by the Spice Girls, who were followed by a different girl band called All Saints. All Saints' Nicole Appleton is the other half of Liam Gallagher, who used to be in a band called Oasis, which links to Oasis and 'Slide Away'.

Flaws:

Today's Transcript:

'Slide Away' was taken from 'Definitely Maybe', which was released in 1994. If you add up the numbers in 1994 you get 23, which was David Beckham's shirt number when he played for Real Madrid. Madrid is the capital of Spain, and doesn't have any beaches cos it's hundreds of miles from the sea. Cee-Lo Green has been our guest today, and last night he performed on 'Strictly Come Dancing'. 'Strictly Come Dancing' is hosted by Tess Daly, who's married to Vernon Kay, the host of 'Family Fortunes'. 'Family Fortunes' used to be presented by Les Dennis, who was married to Amanda Holden, who is the only definite member of the judging panel of 'Britain's Got Talent' for the forthcoming series. Today's Tedious Link:

Just Jack, Starz In Their Eyes

Today's Transcript:

Impressions are something that our friend Jon Culshaw is brilliant at doing, on 'The Impressions Show' with Debra Stevenson. Debra Stevenson used to be in 'Corrie', playing the wife of Bradley walsh. Bradley Walsh shouldn't be mistaken for Bradley Cooper, who's a film actor and who will be our guest tomorrow with Vernon, not Chris. Chris is a common abbreviation of the name Christopher, which is a name that links ice-skater Dean with explorer Columbus. Columbus is the capital city of the US state of Ohio. If you replace the 'H' in 'Ohio' with a 'G', add an extra 'L' and shuffle the letters around you get 'igloo', which is a little house made of ice where Eskimos live, although these days I think they prefer to be called Inuits. The word 'Inuit' shouldn't be mistaken for 'innit', which is a word that a lot of people in London use to end their sentences. Sentences are a collection of words, in the same way that song lyrics are a collection of words set to music. Music is a key component in the classic TV show 'Stars In Their Eyes', which links to Just Jack and 'Starz In Their Eyes'.

Flaws:

Dave wasn't quite right about Eskimos; there are two main groups of people that are referred to as Eskimos, one of which are indeed the Inuits (who inhabit the Arctic regions of Canada, Denmark, Russia and the US), but the other are the Yupiks (who inhabit Alaska and the Russian Far East). However, he was correct in saying that the term Eskimo is generally considered offensive nowadays.
