This week in a Golden Hour Game special we celebrate the life of Freddie Mercury, who died 20 years ago today.

Johnny 1989 is to credit for this idea, he came to me early this year suggesting a special for Queen, and this date, and so here we are.

To clarify, songs by Queen or from Mercury's solo career will be accepted this week.

  • To play, post a song from the theme (or year) in this thread with a youtube link if possible.
  • Do not post a song that has already been chosen, and please try not to change your answer, though if you really want to, you can. Also, only one entry each.
  • 3-5 days after the thread was originally posted, a poll will go up with all the entries (that qualify for the category).
  • For the next 3 days the forum can vote on their favourite option, with one vote each. Voting for your own choice is frowned upon but not disallowed.
  • When the poll closes, the song with the most votes is the winner. As this is a special, there is no 'prize' a such, but the honour of winning.

On a side note, congratulations to Ben for winning the last GHG, he will be asked to pick next week's category. Ben is now drawing with Zoot for the most game wins ever.

I wanted Fat Bottomed Girls though.

And then it was between this & Tie Your mother Down.

I never realised it was 20 years ago today.

RIP Freddie. :(

I would have had either Fat Bottomed Girls or I Want to Break Free first - but since they're gone, I've got to choose between Killer Queen and a solo song that I absolutely love.... so - Living on My Own it is.

Is it really 20 years?! Blimey. (Not so) interesting fact - my mum went to see Queen and Freddie Mercury flew over in a low-flying plane and waved at her while she was on a roofless portaloo.

Thanks for doing this John 22, yeah it's scary I remember the day it was announced on TV-am (for anyone old enough to remember than channel), I was 8 and it was the first famous death I was aware of. It's such a shame he was taken from us so young, however his legacy still lives on & even today the man & the band still have influences on the modern musicians (even if a lot of them aren't anywhere near his quality)

Anyway I notice several of you have chose my faves already, it was a toss up for me between I Want It All or These Are The Days Of Our Lives. In the end I went for These Are The Days Of Our Lives, Freddie's last apperance on video (where you can clearly see how much AIDS had effected him by this point) and also his goodbye song to the fans, still sounds great 20 years on:

Would have gone for Don't Stop Me Now or Bohemian Rhapsody but instead:

Queen - We Are The Champions

And John I'll have a think and PM you some point this week.

Its actually only just hit me why we are doing this - it can't be 20 years can it? Surely not. It seems like no time at all.

That's what too much gin over the years does to you boys and girls. Stay off the drink or you'll become like Yudster here. Never mind 20 years passing by too quickly, it took her from 9.03 last night to 8.43 this morning just for her brain to process this concept. Be sensible kids (see what I've done there) take drugs instead.

Oh and another thing.

I am not a huge fan of rock, and therefore queen, although I do think Bohemian Raspberry is fantastic.

So, in a huge attempt to curry votes through sentimentality, I give you perhaps the two greatest volcalists of the 20th Century, singing one of the best songs ever written, with some slitty eyed bird as well.

Imagine - JOhn Lennon feat Freddie Mercury - LIVE!

Both sadly taken from us too early

I went for one of Queen's lesser known songs, back when they were still recording heavier stuff, before the more theatrical anthemic songs :D

Queen - Brighton Rock

Fell in love with this song as soon as I heard the opening riff. One Vision.

There's too many amazing Queen songs to choose from. I'm a massive fan of Breakthru, You're My Best Friend and Hammer To Fall not to mention Another One Bites The Dust and Seven Seas of Rhye.

I'm going to go with this one though, as it's one of the last songs Mercury recorded and was very frail by this stage. May didn't know if Freddie would be physically capable of recording this vocal due to the extent of Mercury's illness and the vocal range of the song. It really goes to show how talented the man was right up until the end. Which is precisely what this song is about, which makes it a very powerful song lyrically when you know that Mercury is singing about his own severely deteriorating health, but still, the show must go on.....
