The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Maybe it's down to lack of sleep from watching the Superbowl but I'm fed up with it already. Each year the over the top One Big Weekend promotion irritates me (along with the 'thank you radio 1' trails afterwards) but this year is seemingly going to be ever worse, 6 weeks of registration!

I might be alone but is it really necessary to waste so much air time on it it's not like they struggle to give the tickets away?

No, your not alone, I agree, fed up already.

This is gonna milked and squeezed of every last drop promoting this, as it always is every year without fail, but because its on later than usual this is gonna be even more annoying.

Besides after hearing most of the acts appearing which is too dance and R&B heavy for me, I like proper instrument playing bands personally. I hoped for big bands like Coldplay, Kasabian and Kaiser Chiefs etc, no offence to Bombay bicycle club but was hoping for something that wont be forgotten about in a couple of years.

I'm also already worried that they're gonna harp on about this every day between now and July. I've got no interest in going and even if I did, I don't need to hear about it all morning every morning. The thing about the photos was quite amusing, though.

Also any mention of Bombay Bicycle Club always makes me crave Bombay mix.

Given that (presumably) it's such a big chunk of Radio 1's budget, and the BBC have to justify everything that they spend money on - being able to demonstrate that there's a huge public interest and demand in the event will serve to help justify it's existence and continuation.

It's the most important event of Radio 1's year, and acts as an embodiment of their mission statement as a broadcasting station, demonstrating all the values which they want to exude.

Given that this is the biggest 'big weekend' ever by far - and may be the biggest ever, I'd say that if they didn't promote the hell out of it (garnering a huge amount of public interest along the way) - they wouldn't be able to justify the huge spend of licence fee payer's money that is going on it.

You can't register if you're outside of the UK or under 16 at the time of the event.

I am fed of of it already too, I thought I'd misheard them when they said there was six weeks of registration! Absolutely ridiculous. On the subject of R1 promotions and trails, did anyone else heard that really strange trail after the half seven news of Scott Mills saying 'Eurgh, look at THAT!' or something along those lines several times, with just a one line explanation of the end about the fact that if that's what he thought of your timeline, imagine what your parents would say? I didn't have a clue what the point of it was (I got the Twitter reference) until Aled mentioned in passing later in the show that it was internet safety week or some such crap this week, so I assume it was related to that. I'm guessing we can look forward to them harping on about this later in the week.

I'm not fussed, it's a thing for them so I can see why they have to plug it. I have no intention of going, not one artist catches my eye. And to counter Chris' statement that if there's nothing there you like there's no point in listening to Radio 1, I listen to the show because it's funny, the music is inconsequential.

Well theres plugging and theres PLUGGING.

And did they actually come up with a decent reason why you should include a photo? Because the 'crowd eugenics' argument they made fun of is the only one i can think of.

If we're going to get this every morn till June, then i'm turning over to 6 music after 7 & until 9. The R1 playlist is bad enough at the moment, but combined with them banging on about this all spring & summer, it will tip me over the edge.

This is true. If I miss the show I'll listen to it on here (God bless ianpwilliams) rather than the iPlayer because there's no way I'm going to be listening to the playlist music out of choice.

I want to go but even if I got tickets I couldn't because it's the same day as my stupid wedding.

Think it's good that they finally have a big and loud event in London. Great line up already, and gut feeling would say they have some final big acts not yet announced , probably to give tickets a final nudge at the end of the 6 weeks. Laughed at the text Chris read out saying it will take 6 weeks to register, it is a bizarrly complicated application process. On a positive note it hopefully will discourage hundreds of thousands of applying since there is a bit of hassle going through all the processes.

Has there been much mention on today's show?

I haven't been able to listen yet, but given the reaction on here to heavy promotion on the first day of registration I can only hope they had the sense not to mention it ever again.

It's cos the tickets will have photos on, to ensure the applicants are actually attending the gig, and aren't selling them on at a tidy profit.

Is Hackney weekend replacing Radio 1's Big Weekend this year?

Okay. Mind you this doesn't seem like an over-complicated , expensive , bureaucratic nightmare thats prone to f*ck ups, does it? :D

I hate the milking of the big weekend promotion every year so announcing the line-up even earlier than usual and it happening later is only going to make the whole thing worse if they are going to mention it every day until the show. Honestly, I think the line-up kind of sucks and hardly any bands whatsoever but might change that when it is closer.. Wonder what auto-tune man (Will.i.am) will say instead of Hackney since he has a tendency to get places wrong doesn't he?

Oh trust me, no ticketing system is immune from balls-ups. You're right, it will be costing them a lot of money in staff to deal with the applications and produce the photo IDs, and taking that into consideration I think the £2.50 handling fee is quite reasonable. I do understand why they want to go to such measures to keep the event essentially free, but having worked on some events that were a lot smaller and less complex and yet still went wrong, I feel kinda sorry for everyone involved!

Yes, the endless plugging annoys me, but not much you can do about it except switch to another station until they finish!

Hey, at least they didn't get Holly from * Maidstone to do the voiceover adverts again. God I hate her voice.

There's so much negativity about the Hackney weekend - does the Big weekend usually get this much hate here?

I think it's great - and very important to the station as a whole, and the promotion reflects that level of importance.
