The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Let me explain myself ,
I was listening to some older podcasts last night and more often than not in interviews he'd take things further than any other DJ would. I.e Talking to Victoria Beckham about Boobs, and saying at least his is natural .

There hasnt been alot of that recently. In fact, since the whole Paygate "scandal" (sic) he seems to be have toned down extremely.

I'm still a huge fan of him and the show, and I know its natural for shows to evolve and progress, but I think he needs that little bit of edginess back , or else he's just an older Greg James.

Was listening to that old lucas and walliams interview from 2004 recently and it is true that he tried harder back then, with those awkward pauses before the bed kicks back in.

The way I see it is - the more of a handful the guest, the better the radio, these days he's well known so everyone calms down a bit.

He can't be a 'bit of a lad' forever.

I think it's the BBC policies that are changing him if anything.

Fairly recently they were looking for an old song Dave had written a couple of years ago. They were not allowed to play it without beeping out the word Boobs.

It's madness.

If he over steps the (new) mark he'll be in trouble.

I hate political correctness. It's takes the fun out of everything.

I think they liked to call it 'social justice' or some bollocks like that.

Its good that they're careful though. Heard Aled being cautious before Dave read something this morning.

I think you're referring to Sunshine Sheilas, which was written for and played out on afternoons, almost 10yrs ago. Breakfast has a much bigger and potentially younger audience (little kids on the way to school etc), so things are bound to have changed since then.

From someone who has been listening to the 2004 shows a lot over the past few months, I can definitely say that he has lost his edginess but I don't think it is mainly him and more to do with the fact that the BBC are much stricter now with certain policies and you can't get away with most things nowadays. Like the way him and Dave carried on in some parts back then is definitely a lot different than what you would hear today from them and some of it has to do with maturity I guess but like I said, policies etc.

I still enjoy the show but you can certainly see the difference from when the breakfast show started. CPC isn't the same as it was and I actually prefer how it was since they actually played the game and not waste 5-10 mins (sometimes) talking to people who might be interesting or dull as hell. Also I loved it when Chris got annoyed with the thick callers and cuts them off at the end. Forget what show it was in 2004 but remember he cut them both off before the game finished I believe since they were stupid.

I think the whole phone in scandals & Jonathan Ross/Russell Brand/Andrew Sachs fiasco has resulted in Chris being more toned down, if you listen to the afternoon shows from 2001-2002 they refer to then BA Lizzie Buckingham as a tart, slapper, slut & scrubber amongst many things & yet he & Dave got away with that back then, although I can understand why it's been toned down for the mornings I do get the ump that these uppity people complain about anything that may offend a bloke in a cave on the Ascension Islands if he gets to hear it.

English Bob wrote:Can someone explain to me why you need to bleep out the word 'boobs' in a song, yet on today's Golden Hour they played Tubthumping by Chumbawumba, which repeats the lyric 'pissing the night away' throughout the song? :D

Was wondering that myself whilst listening this morning, so I've asked Aled to see if he can shed some light on the reasons for it.

I think it's a mixture of him being constrained by the current climate at the BBC and simply the fact that he is now a near 40 year old man and has matured. Of course, the words he used to use back then would never be tolerated now, but even forgetting that, he just isnt as edgy nowadays anyway.

That isnt necessarily a bad thing though. I have been listening to the 2004 shows as well, and whilst I love them, I love the shows from 2012 also, even though they are quite different. Nobody forced Chris to be as schmaltzy as he has been this week with the John Bishop stuff. That was his choice and his alone, and I cant see the 2004 version of Moyles doing that (I wish the 2012 version hadnt done it either) but overall he is the same bloke who has changed due to both age and external constraints.

There hasn't been the usual thread complaining about the constant plugging of the text number that always crops up here whenever it's Comic or Sports Relief time. Perhaps people have started to do what I did this week, and just accepted that it was going to be a crap week for the show and consoled themselves with the thought that it'll all be back to normal next week.

I turned it off for the hour between 8 and 9 and listened to a few R2 and R4 shows I'd downloaded instead, and listened to far less of the whole show live than I usually do, so that I could skip through any mentions of John Bishop's challenge on the iplayer. From the tiny bits of it I didn't manage to avoid, it all sounded as irritating as ever, and Chris did sound rather cringeworthy on occasion. I'd gladly give them 20 quid on a yearly basis if they promised never to mention these challenges again.

They battered me into submission this morning. Damn them using pints of lager to illustrate my selfishness in not donating.
Only 4 and a half pints for me in the pub tonight.
I feel dirty.

Yet again I agree with you. There is a bit of a discussion on it in the Ramble section in the 'annoying' thread. I hated this weeks shows, but whatever thoughts I had about it I suppose it should be tolerated as a very occasional, yet significant annoyance.

I turned the radio off in the mornings and listened again in the evenings and skipped the very worst bits. I haven't brought myself to be able to listen to the final couple of hours of todays show yet though.
