So this week the worst songs to get to Number 1. The clarify, 'Number 1' refers to the top spot on the UK Singles Chart, as declared by the Official Charts Company, and midweeks don't count.

  • To play, post a song from the theme (or year) in this thread with a youtube link if possible. Please be very nice to me and also post the title in the following format: Song Artist - Song Title (this saves me time when making the poll)
  • Do not post a song that has already been chosen, and please try not to change your answer, though if you really want to, you can. Also, only one entry each.
  • 3-5 days after the thread was originally posted, a poll will go up with all the entries (that qualify for the category).
  • For the next 3 days the forum can vote on their favourite option, with one vote each. Voting for your own choice is frowned upon but not disallowed.
  • When the poll closes, the winner will be invited to choose the next category. In the event of a tie the first entrant (who was joint first) to get back to me will be allowed to choose. If the winner does not pick a choice within 4 or 5 days, the runner-up will be asked choose.

Ahaha, nice. I think I'm getting in there early with Mr Blobby by Mr Blobby! Will post a vid (not that any of us need to be reminded of it) later.

We did, although it wasn't number 1s. To me, a topic like this means voting for the song you think is the worst, but I know other people interpreted it the other way around!

I hate this track with a surging passion that you can only dream of. Mainly because it offends me to my very core that a sublime artist such as the brilliant Stevie Wonder could possibly produce such utter, utter drivel - and people fell for it. I'm convinced it was a joke on his part - put out a piece of total * RUBBISH and see if the gullible record buying public buy it. Well they did. * fools.

Stevie Wonder - I Just Called to Say I Love You.

OK, well seeing as there's no range of years to pick from... i've gone back a wee while and come up with this as my candidate:
Bombalurina (aka Timmy Mallett)- Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

To think, the things you find funny as a kid, oh dear.

Manchester United - Come On Your Reds. Number one for two weeks in 1994. Dire version of a Status Quo song.

I'm going to go for A1 - Take On Me. They simultaneously managed to not change the song too much, but at the same time absolutely annihilate it. It's just saddening.

I know its not the done thing to speak ill of the dead and that , but recent demise is no excuse to avoid responsibility for this atrocity.

Wrong. Brilliant song phenomenally performed. But each to his own. Some people liked the Stevie Wonder track for goodness sake!

I didn't realise until very recently it was a cover. Dolly Parton did the original. Who knew? (Probably most people, just not me)

Dolly Parton wrote it. She is a far more prolific songwriter than many people realise - an awful lot of songs that you would recognise (if not necessarily like!) were written by her, most of them never recorded by her though.
