I love the Scrillex track! I dont like every song, but the Radio 1 playlist suits me and I think they do a good job of appealing to most people in their target range. I am 35 and apart from the odd song the stuff they play on Radio 2 doesnt appeal to me, and I hope it never will.

I don't agree. I grew up with my parents saying things like that, but you have to remember that "pop music" - by which I mean music created specifically for a young audience - simply didn't exist before the end of the 1950s in America, and the beginning of the 1960s really in the UK. My generation - born in the 1960s - Has grown up with "pop music" and personally I certainly don't have that "it isn't as good as what we used to listen to" attitude at all, and I don't think other people my age do either. Music is different, yes, but again my generation has grown up in an era where massive change in all aspects of our culture is normal, so I think on the whole we embrace it. I see no reason at all why you won't be just as accepting of what is to come.

Radio 1 has always(since I've been a listener anyway) been about playing what's currently popular rather than what's likely to still be popular years from now. It's the BBC's "cutting-edge music" station. Listening to a recording of a show from years ago is just like checking out a time-capsule from when said show went out on the air, and that's something I like a lot.
The situation with music on Radio 1 has always been fluid and dynamic, and that's how I like it. I love the idea of something that's constantly changing and evolving, since that surely reflects life itself. Anyone who doesn't like the idea of "rubbish music" can always listen to Radio 2(*Cringes*).

Me likey change. Change good. Stagnation bad!

I have to disagree with you and agree with Dave's motto instead, 'We don't like change'.

Why is that idea so cringeworthy? Are you like Aled, in that you think listening to any music more than ten years old well make you break out in a rash? If you ever listened to R2 you'd find that there's actually some crossover between their playlist and R1's, and they do play a lot of good music. Have you ever heard 'Mark Radcliffe's Music Club' for example, which is on R2 on Tuesday nights? It's an excellent programme, full of a diverse range of quality music.

I only wish we still had Mark and Lard to take the piss out of the crap music on R1. I know Chris still does this a bit, like he did recently with Lana Del Ray, but they were the masters of it. To this day, I can only think of The Stereophonics, Craig David, and Daniel Bedingfield as joke acts, because M&L used to slate them so frequently and so hilariously.

I'm on the slippery slope towards 40 and Skrillex do not make me want to turn the radio off or over. I wouldn't buy it, but I don't have a problem with it, and I very rarely find myself slipping into that "that's not music, it's just noise" mindset that I associate with my parents. (That said, last time I was home my mother, who is 60, was enthusing about Emile Sande and Lana del Rey, so there ya go.) If anything, the music from the R1 playlist that irritates me most is the Usher/Chris Brown school of banal, tuneless R&B drivel. But I would still never switch off - I just filter it out.

On the Radio 2 'A' Playlist at the moment are Englebert Humperdink, The Beach Boys, Tom Jones and Gary Barlow and The Commonwealth Band!

Even the tracks which crossover tend to be at the more sedate and bland end of the scale. I'll stick with Scrillex and Rudimental thank you very much!

Well, they're bound to be playing Englebert, he's our Eurovision hopeful and it's on the BBC! But they must have been playing Emile Sande and Lana del Rey for my mother to have heard them, she never listens to R1.

What's wrong with The Beach Boys? Will Skrillex still be being played on mainstream radio stations and widely celebrated for his/her/its music 51 years from now? I highly doubt it.

Looking at the R2 playlist, I have to admit that there are quite a few songs I don't recognise, but of those I do, none would even come near to assaulting my senses in the way that Skrillex does. Even old Engelbert is harmless enough. Rubbish, but harmless. I don't know how their playlist works, as the thing I like most about R2's music is the random older stuff that's not mentioned on those lists, but which regularly pops up throughout its shows. Graham Norton's show is the only R2 one I listen to live and therefore in full and without the option to skip over songs, and I always enjoy the music he plays.

I've just had a look at the current R1 playlist too, and I'm more than ready to admit that I'm definitely not 'down with the kids' on this one! I hadn't realised just how much of the current stuff I would consider chuff. I wouldn't chose to buy any of the A-listed songs, there are two I don't mind but wouldn't buy, and the rest I dislike. I like none of the B list, and there are two on the C-list that are ok, but again, I wouldn't buy them. That's out of the song names I recognise, there are also quite a few I don't.

Its part of R1's remit to play what is current. Just happens to be squelchy-dubstep-electro-robot orgy soundtrack at the moment. I'm sure 2013 will all be about the growing Mongolian Acid Folk scene.

All I said was that it makes ME cringe, which is fair enough.

Emmy wrote:Are you like Aled, in that you think listening to any music more than ten years old well make you break out in a rash?

Aled is hardly like that.
I love classic music too(My favourite band ever is Queen - I think that says it all) but I prefer to hear current stuff on the radio. If I want to listen to something classic I'll Spotify it or burn myself a compilation CD. For me the whole experience of listening to the radio is a current one, so plenty of current music fits in well with that.
And yes, I have listened to Radio 2 - Steve Wright and Simon Mayo - and I know that wasn't necessarily the best representation of the station as it was during the day, but still, it was so terrible it put me off listening to that station at any other time.

Ah now, that I'm big into. Looks like 2013 will be my year for music on R1 in that case. On a side note, do most people here manage to guess the correct year for The Golden Hour every week? I've often wondered how so many people texting in get it right (assuming they didn't just google it), when I never have a clue, because I have no recollection of what year any song came out.

For me, Chris could play his half hour of songs and say it was 2002 when it was really 2008 and I'd be none the wiser. I would hope to know what decade they were from, but even that would be sketchy in terms of whether it was the late 90s or early 2000s. I really do want to know how people can remember music from a certain year so accurately, it's puzzled me for a quite a while now whilst listening on Fridays!

I rarely guess the golden hour year correctly, but that is usually because I don't like or identify with the music Chris picks. Generally I am pretty good with remembering the year music came out, but I need to have some reason to remember that song. That is rarely the case with the golden hour.

I agree with MadTheEddos when it comes to preferring music on the radio to be current. Occasionally I will listen to Absolute 80s of an evening and enjoy it, but as a rule I want my radio to be a cross-section of current day music with occasional songs from the past five years or so thrown in, which is pretty much what Radio 1 does at the moment.

Every track on the Radio 1 playlist I always love or hate, but I do have to say for a lot of their target audience they do pick the right stuff.

Same here. My brain just works that way. I'm not trying to remember when songs came out, I just do. My dad is exactly the same.

I'm actually pretty surprised they have a playlist in the same way that Radio 1 do - you wouldn't normally know it to listen because the range of music they play is so big.

To be honest if it wasn't for Moyles' show I wouldn't bother with Radio 1 at all, for me 6 Music is the BBC's best station, lots of bands (world famous & starting out) from the past or the present, what I like about 6 Music most is that they have a wide range of music (for example Radcliffe & Maconie, Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show and 6Mix) and the presenters are mostly decent as well.

Everytime I hear a song on Radio 1 it's either R'n'B, Hip-Hop or Dubstep, I whilst I don't mind a bit of the first two from time to time, all three genres seem to be overly played at the expense of everything else at the mo. To use the "Yoof" line is also a load of arse as well, my brother is within the "age range" and he and his mates like music of all different genres and from different decades (yes shock, horror people under 25 do like music made before 1999) but the bosses seem so admant to not shift on their music policy at Radio 1 at the moment, it's silly really.
