The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Actually the more i listened to Tuesdays show there were little things that now make sense - like Aled doing the Bumming into Car Park Catch Phrase and following up with - i think now its the time of year for me, i will push it a bit more tomorrow.

Thank goodness for the archived shows on this site!

Just to add my thoughts.

The timing was a surprise initially but the signs seem to have been there. The lack of confirmation of how the JCS tour would affect the show was one. I'm also certain I heard a brief aside in the last week or so (can't remember to check precisely) involving Dom and finding out if he's leaving (or similar) and then a bit of chuckle I thought it was a contract renewal thing (a bit like when he went freelance).

I wonder like others whether the tour was the cause or effect of this decision as I'd always expected the show to end at Christmas (this year being an increasing favourite with Ben's equivocation over what Chris' current contract stipulates).

The Rhys Hughes before the news song does seem even more pointless now though! The show (in my opinion) hasn't been anywhere near what it was this year but it's still my default choice. I hope there is a new show perhaps just Chris on his own (or with Dave) his filling in for Greg was the best thing he's done this year.

As for Big Boss Ben's masterplan it certainly works in my case. I turn 30 in August and will stop listening to the breakfast show at the end of September!

I have quite mixed feelings over today's announcement. Between early 2006 and last Winter I listened to almost* every show, in full on the iPlayer during the course of the week. I took time off work and stayed up to watch the entire marathon show live, while posting here as the show went on. I'd say I was a pretty hardcore fan.

Sadly though I've got to say that my interest started to fade in the run up to last Christmas. I missed a couple of shows, then tried to get back into the show in the new year, but for me, the show just seemed to have changed. I didn't say anything here at the time as in the past I seem to remember 'dissenters' being rather flamed, but I gave up on the show, and to me it felt like a pretty big deal (also left me with a lot more time on my hands! :-P ). Coming on here today I see that even a good few of the forum's hardcore members have noted and spoken out about the shows decline in one way or another over the last few months, so maybe I got out at the right time... I don't think the show's obsession with Twitter/Facebook interaction or Chris' non-radio distractions helped the show either, but I can't really blame him for branching out.

So basically my view is that they've called it quits at the right time. The winds of change are blowing through Radio 1, and in my opinion, those winds have damaged the CM Show and were only set to hurt it even more. It was only going to become a shadow of the show most of us fell in love with, and for some including myself, I'd say it already has. Radio 1 might be chasing 'the youth', but they lost this 23 year old. I've got to say though, if this announcement had come a year or two ago, I'd be as gutted as some of the other posters here.

* I missed just a handful of shows over the years due to holidays and suchlike.

the sniper is right about the Twitter/Facebook obsession. I'm sure they are being ironic, but when they keep saying "hashtag this" and "hashtag that", and trying to get inane phrases trending on Twitter, it's just lazy radio.

This is a post from another thread that I think sums up the case for the defence nicely:

chrysostom wrote:At the end of the day, the BBC requires positive feedback from their audience to justify their spend, as they are a public broadcaster who are not allowed to present financial records alone as a sign of success.

When social media (for commercial use) rose to prominence via Facebook - the team pushed all the audience to there and started to focus their content online. This was because it was a free alternative to texting in, and it appealed more to their target audience (at the time, the largest age group of users on Facebook was 15-24).

It reached them through a medium that they were already using, was modern and would set the standard for interactive radio broadcasting. The content they provided got many more hits than the Radio 1 website, with an enhanced sense of engagement. All of this would come across very well to the BBC bosses, and secures the future of features such as the pub quiz, by assuring anyone who challenges the merits of it (with quantified data).

Twitter came along and provided everything on a much more instant level. It is a much more social platform for brands to interact with, and allows the show to reach a much wider audience - as interacting with a brand on Twitter is as simple as using a hashtag. More people post on Twitter (in terms of volume) than on Facebook - which means that the team benefits much more from using Twitter as a means of show promotion.

The number of worldwide trends that the show has produced shows the power of Moyles' audience - something which won't be going unnoticed among the Radio 1 bosses. Being able to show that your audience is so engaged with your content that they can trend a benal topic (#saynotohardbutter) - is not only great for the future of the show, but also for justifying the rambling, ridiculous show content that a majority of fans of the show love. When Capital tried to trend #CapitalFMrocks the other day, the team blew them out of the water with #Radio1Rocks trending in London, the UK and Worldwide - that's the kind of data which provides insight into the audience that Rajar figures can't.

Like many, I am a long time lurker but felt I had to comment after today's news.
I am truly gutted. I've been listening to Chris for a while, firstly around work but for the last 5 years at home as due to illness I haven't been able to work. The show has been my constant, my company and my escape from the real world. Even at my worst, the 3 1/2 hours has made me feel better.
I have excitedly awaited the birth of show babies, watched Dave marry and divorce, twice, stayed up all hours watching the marathon show and text, retweeted and hash tagged all sorts of things. I have laughed and cried with them all.
All for people I don't know but who have become like a part of the family. I wish Chris and the team the very best for whatever the future holds and thank them for all the hardwork and entertainment. I shall miss them all.

I am absolutely devastated!
I think like most listeners I really felt a part of the show and in turn it was a part of my day-to-day life,.
We need to just find out where the show moves to (hopefully it does) and then we can all migrate :)
Moyles and Mills are the only reason i listen to radio1 and I'll never listen to again after Mills gets sacked,.

I am absolutely gutted to hear the news today. Unfortunately I missed the announcement, but just heard it again there.

I've been a long time listener of the show. In fact 2002 was when I first listened. I've listened to the show nearly everyday, even when it was on Sirius in the US. I find it weird that in a couple of months, there will be no more Cheesy Song, Rob DJ's Monday Night Pub Quiz, McFly Day, Golden Hour, Carpark Catchphrase etc, and yes, I'll confess I join in the "when I say (x) you say (y) in the car!"

The Chris Moyles Breakfast Show is the only enjoyable part of my daily 25 mile journey to work. It has been great to laugh along with them.

Today has also made me feel old. I will be 30 in September, which "apparently" makes me too old for Radio 1. So it looks like I'll be joining the radio 2 crew. I can't see me listening to Nick Grimshaw at all. It's a shame that listner ages take priority over RAJAR figures.

So to Chris, Dave, Dom, Aled, Tina, Freya, Pippa, Sam, Ant, Rachael, Carrie, Juliette, Will and to a lesser extent Matt Fincham, I thank you all.

I think the best posts today have been from long time lurkers, new members and infrequent posters.

Please, all of you stay here and post more frequently when Chris (hopefully) moves onto his next show.

I've just thought about the 3 and a half hour hole I'm going to have in my day.... It's slowly dawning on me how crap it will be without the show. My daughter is upset too, she always listens before school and has grown up with it on in the background every day.

I've not read the 15 odd pages of forum posts on this but wanted to pop my thoughts in as it is a pretty major thing, the biggest radio show slot is getting a new host and the most successful is leaving. At the ripe old age of 29, I can say hand on heart that I am not R1's target demo anymore, I would much rather listen to three and a half hours of Chris and the team chat and joke that listen to track after track of songs that will be forgotten about in 6 months time, most of the music is over played at R1 and I cannot stand the other shows, I only tune in for Chris and the team. If he stays on at R1 to do a show (whatever slot it might be) I will find a way to listen, if I am at work - god love the iPlayer! If Chris joins another station I will follow gladly.

I think with the new "young" radio 1 output Chris just did not fit anymore and while he draws in 8 million a morning, it is an aging demo that R1 will not want for the weekday output and I guess it is a sad sad time.

I have listened from 1997, early early mornings, weekend breakfast, drive time and breakfast. I have grown up with Chris and the team and I will sorely miss the banter, jokes and fun.

Thank you Chris and the team

I have just remembered I noticed last week he changed his picture on Twitter. I remember thinking that's nice, cos he NEVER changes that. All I thought was that it was the end of CMQN, but the reality was far more dramatic, this was him posting his Radio1 picture, and gearing up for the big announcement.

I feel better now, back to normality, can get ready to celebrate the best damn show in the world over the next couple of months.

Lets do this. :)

Devastated!! It still hasn't quite sunk in yet to be honest. Am totally stumped as to what on earth I will listen to in the mornings. Nothing appeals. Can't believe how much 'just' a radio show matters to me. It is such a sad day :(
