The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

So I'm 42, way over Radio 1's target age group. Fair enough, but what are the BBC doing for me?

Radio 2 - Boring, dull, middle of the road tosh, 'big band specials', military band nonsesnse and all the Radio 1 cast offs
Radio 3 - Err no thanks
Radio 4 - yes for the news, but for entertainment??
Radio 5 - Ask me again when you've got an FM frequency!
Radio 6 - ditto - even worse than Radio 5 as the car manufacturers have by and large given up on digital radio and my car is my main listening time

So come on Mr Cooper, what are the BBC doing for me? Naff all is the answer - and I suspect for a lot of other people as well.

Anyone who's been forced to listen to the utter rubbish on commercial radio, often mocked by moyles in amazing fashion, will tell you it's not hitting the spot.
A large group for the BBC to ignore. I'm 25 (in target) and a lot of my friends are now going to turn their backs on Radio1. I only really listened to Moyles and Mills/James, but now they won't have me at all, there's no appeal without the comedy factor.

Steve Leady....get stuck into Radio 4, it's all happening in The Archers dontcha know. Ye gods, they've even discussed 50 Shades of Grey on Woman's Hour!! 8O The Food Programme is also worthwhile. If you want smut listen again to I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, more double entendres than you can hit with a stick.

Does 5 Live not have an FM/MW output? Colleague at work said her hubby always listened to it in his car, but he doesn't have DAB in there.

Are these podcasts funny? Are they anything like the "comedic random chat" that we get with Moyles?

And does anyone know of any other shows with a similar vibe going on, be they on R1 or other stations? I've never heard Greg James show, but I hear some people recommend it, and he doesn't offend my ears particularly (unlike some other DJ's, like Nick Grimshaw, who I definitely won't be listening to). I was a massive Mark and Lard fan, and Adam and Joe, and then obviously Moyles, so that gives you an idea of what I'm into. And the music doesn't matter - I'll just ignore it or edit it out. Which is why podcasts are definitely an option.

It also says that you're the kiss of death for radio shows.

Agreed on everything except Radio 2. I mean you're quite right that some of it is like that, but just have a listen to Simon Mayo one evening from 5-7 - brilliant, brilliant radio. Yes, he's ex-Radio 1 as well, but that doesn't mean he's a cast-off in a negative sense.

Every time I've tried Radio 2 I come to the same conclusion - too old for me. I also don't like Chris Evans, so that doesn't help matters for my morning listening.

I might give Simon Mayo a go though.

I don't mind a bit of radio 2, but generally I feel like it's too old and too middle-class for me. I will probably try Grimmy's show and see how I feel with it, and maybe listen to the old Moyles shows while out and about. I am another one who's way past radio 1 target audience, but I don't like the thought of losing touch with current pop music - don't ask me why I care about that, I have no idea.

Well, taste is obviously subjective, but the only radio show I listen to is TCMS, and all my other listening is the podcasts above. They are all comedy podcasts, listed in order of funny. WTF with Marc Maron is more of an interview show where he interviews (mainly) comedians, but it's sometimes funny.

You will not get more random than Jim and Eddie Talk Shit...

And me. I don't want to become some old bloke hankering onto their youth, but I hate the idea of being a middle aged git who bangs on about everything being better in their day.

Radio 2 does nothing for me either. I have tried it many times and it scares me. I'm at a bit of a transitional age now where people my age may start switching to that station and I don't want to be one of them!

I love Sara Cox, but when I have heard her on R2 it's as if the life has been sucked out of her. What they expect from their presenters is not what I want from a radio station. That said, Topher does make me want to give Mayo a listen. I heard him on R1 and 5live and I liked him on both, but the R2 format and the soporific music puts me off.

We're in kind of a golden age of comedy podcasts. There are some fairly big names in comedy doing podasts now, not all of which I've listed -- people like Greg Proops, Doug Benson, Dana Gould, John Oliver etc.

Some random clips from the shows I listed (which are probably all EXTREMELY NSFW)

TenMinPod is my current favourite. It's just non-stop banter and ball-busting between 3 actor friends (they've acted respectively in The Hangover, The Three Stooges and Whitney) :

It'd be interesting to see how the BBC Trust divides the age ranges & what stations they 'should' be listening too. 15-29 radio 1, everyone else radio 2? Hardly an equal split. Radio 3 is a matter of taste in music in my opinion, radio 4 for news & 5live for sport!

I listen to Simon Mayo on my way home, mainly for the confession & all request Friday. I flick back to radio 1 for the 10 minute takeover

I think the BBC freely acknowledge that they don't specifically cater for 30-35 year olds. Radio 1 is for under 30s and Radio 2 is for 35+. The commercial stations are expected to cater for anyone inbetween.

Moyles "rescued" me from my local station, which was then called Invicta FM. It's now a faceless Heart station and the only local station now is kmfm. I listen to kmfm when Moyles is off and besides the adverts their music selection is actually pretty good.

Sort of mixes radio 1 playlist with what I've listened to between 1995 and now.

I'll give their breakfast show a try when Chris moves on. I might be surprised!

There are a couple on my local Capital station who I think are pretty good. Their problem is that the format of the show is so stifling they have no room to develop.

DarroM wrote:Neil I don't know if you know of the site called This Year but since you seemed to like Adam Carolla, the guy there has done these highlights of when he did a radio show back in 2006 and there is a lot of hours it seems! http://www.thisyearcollection.org/2011/ ... -2006.html - That is one of them but he has done up until August currently.

Thanks, I've seen This Year and it looks interesting, but my OCD listening habits mean I have to do the whole thing in order! -- I'm currently going through the last year of Adam's Loveline Years (2005): http://www.lovelinetapes.com/ and then I'll be doing the KLSX years. I listened to the KLSX TACS podcasts from about 2007, but will do all the KLSX shows in full, and in order...
Then, it's likely to be TCMS 2004-2012 (RIP) :(

Related to Adam, another one of my favourites -- a show that's now ended, but was fantastic at the time: http://davesofthunder.com/ -- all the shows are available for download from that site. It took a few shows to get going, but from about Ep.9 it was all Comedy Gold. One one of the shows, they played a parody song I wrote... :D
