But I think if one person buys the hard drive they are unlikely to want to send it to other people who would like the unedited shows in case it got damaged.

Unless they just upload the lot of them. I suppose it isn't that important though, so long add we get all the edited ones.

I think if it's just a few contributors who want it then we'd just have to trust everyone to package it carefully and take care of it. No sending it to newbies!

Having done something similar in the past with DVDs of the sound vault, I'd advise caution. They rapidly went missing and people got "too busy" to ever send them on.

The best approach is to get the files as directly as possible from the source to someone who you know will upload/edit them. Compressing the shows to MP3 from the original wavs will save significant space and may make it possible to share them via online means.

I think that's why we wouldn't send them to newbies. I think it would probably be only sent between about 3 of us. Then again though it may be just as easy for somebody to just upload them all if they have fast enough internet.

I made a post in the other thread about show sizes. In theory we could be looking at slightly over 4TB uncompressed and unedited.

Yea, there are 4TB USB drives and there are no issues transporting them in their original packaging. I've done it many times.

I think it's important for archival purposes to have the original shows stored in a lossless form. That 4TB should compress down to ~2Tb using FLAC. At least one person should have the archive plus it should be shared with a few more people as backup.

I'd love to have every unedited show as a FLAC.

Edited, you may be looking at 1.3TB in FLAC and 130GB as 128kbps.

More later as I'm typing this on my phone...

I've got BT Infinity here at work with an uncapped 9Mbit upload speed :)

I agree with Neil that there should be a FLAC copy kept. In that vein, my work PC is a Core i7 with 8GB of RAM so I don't mind lending a hand with the file crunching too :)

While I'm offering shizz, I don't mind dropping the hard drive round, I've just noticed how close R1 is to St Pancras Int'l, and Southeastern run highspeed services from my doorstep to STP in 37 minutes!

Chris does make a good point. And there's no denying that one Chris Moyles Show, edited or otherwise, is a lot smaller in mp3 format than it is in WAV format.

Personally I'd be really happy with an edited version of every show in 128kbps mp3 format. But I really want it to be EVERY show :D Whatever happens, I'm expecting to be doing a lot of editing...

Anyway, we still have to see what Aled says (if he sees my message and replies), so we have time to think about it.

i can see why people would want unedited versions of every shows but I'll be just fine with edited versions and the ones that Ian, Ben, Mike and Slaphead etc have put up seem fine to me and are good to listen to at the end of the day! I deleted the unedited versions I had of 2010 and 2011 shows and just download the edited ones later mainly because I only listen because of the banter of course and man, some of the older shows have songs that are played to death and I wouldn't want to hear unedited versions of that and get sick of the songs! :P

It is nice to see that Aled will give the site the shows once the show is finished and we can pretty much have a complete Breakfast show archive in due course, which is pretty awesome. We pretty much have all of 2004, 2005 (maybe), 2010, 2011 & 2012 thus far with 2008 with the way Slaphead has been dishing them out not far behind. It is going to be grand when it is complete.

Just once again, a huge thanks to the guys who take their time to edit and upload the shows for us people to listen to for the first time or go on a bit of a nostalgia trip! :)

Aren't we all assuming Aled has just got the Breakfast Show archive? What if he has a bucketload of afternoon shows? That would be even more amazing, and probably a priority, seeing as we have most of the breakfast shows already in some form.

As for missing afternoon shows, I think this is what I'm still missing. 23/10/07, 16/11/07, 30/11/07, 03/12/07, 04/12/07, 17/12/07, 09/06/09, 10/06/09
