I don't know if I was too clear earlier on, but here's what I'm proposing:

1) Aled transfers his WAV (uncompressed 44KHz, 16-bit stereo audio) shows to a USB hard drive and passes that to The Gatekeeper Of The Files.
Let's say for argument, the files are 4TB and we have given Aled a 4TB drive.

2) The Gatekeeper Of The Files (let's now call him The Archivist) compresses these files losslessly using something like FLAC. This retains 100% of the quality of the original file, but it uses about 50% less space. The FLAC files are still playable with many media players, but not usable on say an iPod. This doesn't matter, as it's an archival format used to preserve the original quality with no losses. See later for how the files are ultimately distributed.
Before compressing the files, The Archivist creates an MD5 or SFV for each file or group of files so integrity checks can be performed later. This is fairly quick.
The files are now 2TB. A few people would like to keep copies of these. We can call these "The Quality Nuts".

3) The Quality Nuts each send a 2TB USB drive to The Archivist and he transfers the FLACs and MD5s to the drives and sends them back to The Quality Nuts. Maybe there are 3 or 4 Quality Nuts. I am one of them.
This serves two purposes. It satisfies the Quality Nuts desire for the best possible quality and also acts as multiple off-site backups of the files. If a file is corrupted somewhere (verifiable with the MD5), it can be restored from another backup site.

4) Edits can be performed on the FLAC files (decode losslessly back to WAV, edit, save as FLAC and/or MP3) to remove News and music etc.

5) The edited MP3 versions can now be distributed to The Masses. The Masses will be happy with 128kbps MP3 files and the files will take up approximately 130GB.
The distribution could be via archive.org or by other means. Bearing in mind that because the edits will take a while, long upload and download times may be not a big issue as files will be edited one at a time and be posted on archive.org individually over time.

How does that sound?

ianpwilliams wrote:Yeah, no doubt a few of us will edit the missing ones. It's possible I could be "The Archivist" too, although I've never worked with FLAC before, or the other file types you mentioned

Think of FLAC as just a playable, smaller, compressed version of WAV. You can open FLAC directly in Audacity, for example.

I started work on sound clipping when I got in from work at 6.30 and I've just stopped. And I barely scratched the surface of all the requests I have to do! My back's killing me. Good job I love doing this :)

I was going to offer to do the 108.9 The Pigeon one if you need some help?

Oh yes, please. That's especially good as my downloads don't include the handover so I'd have had to download Fearne's show to do it. Thanks :)

OK, I'm on it.

Oh, you edit the tedious links from my edits? I didn't know that :)

Well I could post the DVD's of 2007 to you that Jamie posted to me, although they are in RA format so they have to be converted to mp3. Or I could possibly convert them all to mp3 first (if I have room on my computer - I think I do) and then send them to you on what would probably be one DVD.

Still haven't got a reply from Aled anyway, so it's hard to know what's going to happen.

Hope people don't mind me chipping in here, I realise this is my first post. Been lurking since when the site was created and have downloaded numerous clips and files off here over the years. In fact I used to do some horrendously bad show reviews on here a long long long time ago, no idea what username or email address I used, but yeah, don't hold that against me!

Just wanted to offer my assistance in any way I can, massive fan of the show and would do anything to get hold of a complete set of uneditted shows, I guess that makes me a quality nut. But happy to help out where I can, I can donate, whatever is needed. I am no technical genius, but yeah, keen to get involved, even if its just with a donation! Will try to follow the thread from here on, think you are all doing a fantastic job.

Edit: Also, i'm sure you are aware that the links in the OP of this thread don't seem to be working. Anyway, hope all goes well with Aled.

ianpwilliams wrote:I'm wondering if I should stop continuing to edit 2007 Moyles for now? If Aled has WAV's of them then they will be better quality, so I'd only end up editing them all again anyway.

It's up to you if Aled has them. But i'm going to download the edits that are already up anyway :)

ianpwilliams wrote:I'm actually wondering how long (if at all) it will be until I get a response from Aled. He said himself on-air that he's never been so busy with online communications since the announcement.

Well, he is on here at the moment(or was a few minutes ago, anyway) answering questions in Ask Aled.

If I read and understand the plan, Then that means I send you (Or whoever gets the un-edited quality versions of the shows) a 2TB external hardrive and wait for the person to upload all the shows onto it and send it back to me for me to start editing them. If that's right then I'm more than happy to be a "Quality nut".

Does anyone have the unedited version of May 19th from this year please? Just noticed that my download is incomplete for some reason.

Oh, and edited to add, I'll be cracking on with updating the archive this afternoon.
