Wow, you're kidding, right? That was clearly an excuse for Mike Read to write an article about how ruddy great he himself is! Unbelievable.

I am a newbie, who decided to register here and join in with the collective "grief" that we are all feeling regarding the end of the Chris Moyles Show. I started listening to Chris back in 98/99 when he was on afternoons and used to love both the Saturday show and those afternoon shows. I naturally followed to breakfast and have loved every minute of the last 8.5 years with Chris and the team. It saddens me that I am 26 and therefore within the "radio 1 demographic" however other than the breakfast show and Scott there is nothing appealing about the stations current output for me. The greatest thing about Chris and the team is their ability to transport me back to those carefree teenage years, as for me their childish banter was exactly what being "young" was about. As years have passed, and responsibilities and pressures of work increased, I have loved those commutes for their ability to return me to a time without household bills and that 9-5 everyday. I understand that the BBC see Radio 1 a it's youth station and therefore must appeal to a young demographic, but if this is the case why let a 40 year old station controller and a presumably fossilized BBC trust tell us what we should be hearing about? Surely youth should have their say?

Following the announcement I naturally decided to re-read Chris' books and the only saving grace comes in the Q&A section from his second book where he is asked if he worries about the show every not being popular. His answer indicates that his plan would be to hopefully pick the entire show up and move it to another station. Whether this is possible or not I'm not sure as I can't see where the Chris Moyles Show would "fit" elsewhere. Likewise I think a weekend show at radio 1 would be a slap in the face following the breakfast show.

I will be using the next couple of months to celebrate a man who has learnt his business from the bottom up and who will absolutely go out at the top of his game. I would like to thank Chris for 15 years of fantastic radio at the station, and to Chris, Dave, Dom, Tina, Aled, Freya, Pippa, Carrie, Rach, Grey 'ed Will and all the others involved over the years thank you for truly defining my generation and for all those years of awesome radio. Best of luck with wherever you end up next - here's 1 listener who will definitely follow.

Nothing really to add because my thoughts have been covered by everyone else. Lurked these forums since they first launched, even used to write particularly awful show reviews on the main page during the early days of afternoons.

Moyles, Dave and the ever changing team have been part of my growing up, I started listening when he first joined the station, I caught the tale end of the early bit, and from then on was getting up earlier and earlier to hear more and more. I loved Saturday mornings, and then the afternoon show was great as well, the move to breakfast just seemed a natural fit to be honest, and even though the quality may have diminished slightly in the last 12 months, Moyles is still a better broadcaster than 99% of people on music radio. It may sound dramatic but this is really the end of an era for me, I grew up with the show and will miss it hugely, they were all part of my life. I just hope whatever offer is on the table from Radio 1, it includes Dave, and that Chris will take it. A return to afternoons would be amazing, but I fear that is just wishful thinking. I don't see myself listening to radio 1 after September, the music is by and large rubbish, outside of Greg James and Mills (I know i'm in a minority) there is noone that I particularly enjoy listening too, it looks as if a switch to Absolute radio is on the cards.

On a related note, I do find it bizarre that Radio 1 are so keen to have their upper listener limit at 25. At 28, there is no radio station aimed at my age group, I feel too young for radio 2, and too old for all the generic 'best in dance and r n b stations' that fill every City in this country. With a different aim, and extending their upper age range to say 32, they could really have increased their listenership I feel. But more and more these days the playlist is full of crap 'yoof' music, and as for the presenters, well, better to say nothing about them. This decision will hurt the station hugely, younger people listen to their mp3 players, not the radio.

Another one of those few and far between positive articles about the show in The Scotsman today, http://www.scotsman.com/lifestyle/tv-an ... -1-2411389 . Written in the form of an open letter to Chris because 'You sounded so disheartened on this morning’s show that I’ve decided to opt for a more personal approach' it's probably the nicest review of the show I've read, with its author describing himself from the outset as being one of Chris' fans. He does say that the announcement came last Tuesday and uses 'you're' instead of 'your' at one point, but I can forgive him that for being so nice about the show!

Candyman wrote:I do agree with most of that, I do prefer his afternoon and Saturday's stuff better than Breakfast. But I don't think his morning work was ever scripted, he may not of been given as much free reign maybe, after all its the flagship show and some stuff may not work on a morning.
I just felt the decline started last year and got worse this year.

I don't mean scripted per se, just on Breakfast there's a routine that they have to follow, and there's announcements and stuff they have to fit in, which interrupts the flow of the show. I preferred it when they could just do what the hell they liked.

I'm just clipping 'Dave Can't Add Up' from Tuesday and Dominic said "I've got some news" (about to report that their hashtag was trending) and Chris said "are we leaving?" and Dom said "no, I don't think so!" and Chris said "well, we'll see."

Weird.

Well, I read that Nick was told in a Tuesday morning meeting he would be taking over the breakfast show, so I'm guessing Chris must have had this "conversation" with Ben Cooper at least a day before.

I guess. The fact he mentioned it like that and none of us picked up on it though, not even chrisjames!

No, it has been mentioned before. I heard Tuesday's show after reading about that comment here.

Ahh that's what I was thinking about when I wrote this but couldn't remember exactly what was said just a vague recollection of leaving being mentioned...

At least I didn't dream it!

Ha! So someone did pick up on it. I missed that altogether.

When I listen back to it once Dom answers no, Chris responds with "well, we'll see later" at which point dom laughs and says "yeah. Probably". This makes it seem like the meeting was still to come later in the day. If I had something like that to announce I would want to tell the listeners ASAP to stop the inevitable press leak followed by even more Moyles fired headlines. Dave also mentions being stuck in a high level management meeting at some point - cant remember which show though.

I am increasingly worried that we may not hear Chris again on R1 and that the negotiations over the new show may turn in to negotiations on how much of a settlement is needed to end the contract early.

To be honest, I'm not bothered. Yes I'll massively miss all the fun stuff they done around the Big Weekends, but apart from that, I'm not bothered what station I he is on.

TBC. Although common feeling is possibly 21st september. Frea tweeted to ask about joining up with sara again after that. (although could of been coseved as a joke as aled was on that tweet aswell)

I was trying to work it out because aled said they have 7 podcasts left after this weeks but they won't have one the two weeks they are off will they. That would make the last podcast 14th sept.

I thought it was 31 aug but I forgot they had 2 weeks off and so wouldn't have a podcast for them 2 weeks

An article about the role of the R1 breakfast show host, which is quite fair to Chris when talking about him. The final line in this paragraph did make me smile, 'Cornflake commentary' is a great phrase.

It's worth noting that the Chris Moyles who first appeared on Radio 1 in 1998 is not the same Chris Moyles who departs in 2012. While his brash style may still not be quite to the tastes of your average Today listener, the tedious misogyny of old has evaporated along with a lot of the riotous "zoo format" whooping and hollering. Quite simply, he's grown up. To his critics, though, the bloated excess that characterised Moyles' early years, and the way in which he clung to his position despite the perceived best interests of the public, may have echoes of recent developments in the banking world. If that's the case, his perhaps reluctant resignation would make Moyles the Bob Diamond of cornflake commentary.

I'm thinking though that if he leaves R1 now it will be the start of a gap in his radio career which is what I enjoy, his TV shows thus far (except bits of the UK Play one) do nothing for me...I can't see any obvious vacancy beyond R1 to just drop straight in. Hopefully it all turns out ok and there's a new show somewhere by the end of the year/start of 2013.
