I use Radio Downloader as well and recommend it highly! Started using it after Sirius got rid of the Radio 1 channel. Works great and great quality.

Slightly unrelated, but what did people use before computers became advanced enough that you could use a program? Tape I guess...

I wouldn't have known Chris Moyles exists.

I also use Radio Downloader and can recommend it. Never had a problem with it.

They sat by their FM radio pressing record and pause on a cassette deck! That's how you got the latest singles to listen to on your Walkman if you didn't have enough pocket money to buy them - taped them off the radio. Ah, memories.

Even I remember taping songs off cassette. I used to do full albums! Think I still have Oasis - Morning Glory on a taped cassette somewhere.

I've actually still got a twin cassette deck. But then I've also got an 8 track.

I used an old long-play VCR hooked up to an analogue satellite box to record Kevin Greening's last drive time show, his first breakfast show with Zoe Ball and a Boxing Day 1997 Chris Moyles show (one day I'll find the tapes again!)

When Simon Mayo and Mark & Lard did their final shows I had the luxuries of Sky Digital and DVDR.

In chronological order:

1. Tapes
2. Psion Wavefinder DAB -> PC
(I recorded very high quality Moyles afternoon shows and Gervais on xfm). I only kept a few Gervaiseses.
3. Freeview DVD recorder -> burn DVD-RW -> rip to PC
4. IPDL MP3s
4a Radio Downloader. Until is stopped working/started recoding
5. get_iplayer AAC direct rips (better quality than IPDL MP3)

Hopefully someone will be downloading all the latest shows. I am sure many people will be recording the shows for us all to download.

I can't use that program as I have a Mac.

I used to sit by the radio listening to the Top 40, with my finger poised over the record button so I could tape my favourite songs, or just any song that had a promising intro. To this day there are certain songs from the early 90s that don't sound right to me without Bruno Brooks or Mark Goodier yelling "Will there be a new number one this week?..." etc at the end of them.

I also had a cassette recorder with an alarm function, where it was possible to set the alarm, switch to radio, turn the power off, press the record button and know that it would automatically start recording at the set time. I seem to remember taping special guests spots that I knew would be coming on when I was at school, and I'd have the volume down to minimum so that it didn't disturb anyone in the house (it still recorded at normal volume). I also started buying 2 hour cassettes for that reason.
