The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

People in Sheffield take pride - for some reason I can't fathom - in being Northerners (even though Sheffield is solidly Midlands, despite being Yorkshire). Sheffield is also the dreariest, most depressed and depressing city I have ever had the misfortune to have to spend time in, and the people there are grumpy arses.

In contrast, where I live in the East of England (but very definitely geographically South) the people couldn't be friendlier, more helpful, more genial and polite. Well, the ones outside the ages of 14 - 24, but I think that applies everywhere.

This whole "people are nicer in the North" thing is crap. There are nice people and arseholes everywhere you look, north, south and even in Scotland.

Wasn't Freya the replacement "Off Air Producer" for Sam and Pippa the replacement for Matt as a BA?

I think you're right. But I think a lot of people base their impression of the south on London, where everyone is busier, everything moves faster and Londoners tend to get impatient with confused tourists. I live in a big busy city, but London still comes across that way to me.

Exactly! That's why I don't set foot in the underground without working out in advance exactly where I'm going and how to get there :)

Oxford North? You're mental. And I'll have you know my accent is delightful. None of you have heard me speak, so you'll just have to take my word for it.

I know of at least one person on this site who has heard you speak...

Oh, Gaspode doesn't count, he isn't here anymore. I texted him on the day of the announcement and told him to come back and post, but he wasn't having any of it.

Sheffield is in the north of England or it's in the middle of the country if you are talking about the whole of the UK. In England from Sheffield and everything above it is the north. There are far worse places in England than Sheffield but like you say there are nice people and arseholes everywhere you look.

If I ever want to really annoy someone from Sheffield (usually a family member, I don't tend to go around randomly picking unknown Sheffield natives to piss off) I refer to it as "South Yorkshire". I have no idea why, but they seem to get irrationally irritated by the use of the word South, even though it IS in South Yorkshire....heheheheh.

I think I told him once ages ago on Twitter to come back but he said he had moved on or the like

I have a mate from Cork who always misses out the "London" part of Londonderry, he has such Irish pride, slates of the Royals yet lives in East London.

I gotta say, a lot of Sheffield bashing going on - which from my experince (worked up her for 5yrs now) is all baseless. Its not the best of places and they do talk funny, but there are a lot worse places - and I know the UK very well.

I've never known a Sheffieldite be offended at South Yorkshire... It does come on every house address round here, for example.

I also agree with comments made about London - people are generally busier and ruder.

In my experiences, from having worked both 'up north' and 'down south' - I'd say the north is friendlier, cheaper and colder. Stereotyped? Maybe, but I did say 'in my experience'.
