Manic Street Preachers, Everything Must Go

Today's Transcript:

Bob Marley shares the same first name as Bob Holness, the legend behind 'Blockbusters'. 'Blockbuster' was the title of a hit for The Sweet. Sweet is often combined with sour in the world of Chinese cookery. Chinese cookery is the cuisine you'd associate with Ken Hom. Ken Hom shares the same initials as Katie Holmes, who's married to Tom Cruise, who was in 'Rainman' with Dustin Hoffman, who was in 'Meet The Fockers' with Ben Stiller. If you remove the first letter if 'Stiller' you get 'tiller', which is a thing on a boat used for steering. 'Steering' rhymes with 'peering', which is what you might do through a window. Window boxes are nice for keeping flowers. 'Flowers In The Window' was a hit for Travis. Travis, first name Dave Lee, has a beard. Beards can be popular with men with no hair on top of their head, as an alternative to a wig. If you owned a shop selling wigs and had to close down and sell off all the wigs you'd probably put a sign in the window saying 'everything must go', which links to Manic Street Preachers and 'Everything Must Go'.

Black Box, Ride On Time

Today's Transcript:

The Manic Street Preachers' Nicky Wire used to like wearing a dress. 'Dress You Up' was a hit for Madonna, who was born in Michigan, which is also where Eminem is from. Eminem doesn't like his mum, who is called Debbie. Debbie McGee is the other half of Paul Daniels, who does magic. Magic often involves hats, which are worn on the head. 'Head' rhymes with 'said', as in Right Said Fred, who were sat in front of us at the Sony Radio Awards last week, where we won nothing. 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now' was a hit for Starship, who used to be called Jefferson Airplane. An aeroplane has a black box, which links to Black Box and 'Ride On Time'.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Give It Away

Today's Transcript:

A black box flight recorder is in fact bright orange, in order for it to be found easily in the wreckage. The word 'wreckage' has many of the same letters as 'package', which is something a postman might put through your door. 'Door' is a word that comes before 'bell', 'mouse' and 'mat'. Matt Willis is getting married and has chosen as his best man David Gest, who didn't make it onto the show on Friday as he was late. If you swap the first letter of 'late' for a 'P' you get 'pate', which you might spread on toast. A toast is what you might do at a wedding. A wedding is a popular location for a punch-up, which might result in blood on the dancefloor. 'Blood On The Dancefloor' was a no1 for Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson is from America, as are the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which links to Red Hot Chili Peppers and 'Give It Away'.

Flaws:

'Door' does not come before 'mouse' - it's 'dormouse' - and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers is actually Australian.

Bros, Drop The Boy

Today's Transcript:

Red hot chili peppers are what you might find in spicy food like Mexican, and can blow your tastebuds. Buds of a different type are found on flowers, which tend to come out in the spring. Spring is also when chickens tend to hatch out of their eggs. Eggs are also laid by things like snakes and turtles. Turtles are vulnerable to predators because they're so slow. Slow is the opposite of fast, and a fast is when you stop eating like for Lent or something, like Jesus. Jesus died on a cross. Across is one of two categories of clue in a crossword puzzle, with the other being down. 'Down Under' was a hit for Men at Work, who were from Australia, a bit like Jason Donovan. Jason Donovan enjoyed pop success in the late 80s at the same time as Bros, which links to Bros and 'Drop The Boy'.

Zero 7, Destiny

Today's Transcript:

Bros started a trend amongst their fans for wearing beer bottle tops on their shoes. Shoes can be made from leather, plastic or rubber. Rubber comes from rubber trees, which grow in parts of South East Asia, while plastic is a synthetic by-product of oil. Oil can be described as crude, as can Roy Chubby Brown. Roy Chubby Brown's real name is Royston Vasey, which is also the name of the fictional village featured in the series 'The League of Gentlemen'. 'Gentlemen' is a word you might see written on the door of a toilet. The word 'toilet' shares many of the same letters as the word 'telephone', which was invented by Alexander Graham Bell, who was Scottish, as was John Logie Baird who invented the television. 'Logie' rhymes with 'bogey', which you might find up your nose, and 'Yogi', who you might find in Yellowstone Park along with Boo-boo. 'Boo' is a word you shouldn't say to a goose. Goose is the sort of thing you'd probably only eat at certain times of the year. The year we're in at the moment is 2007, which can be abbreviated to 07, which links to Zero 7 and 'Destiny'.

Flaws:

Several issues today. Firstly, Chris challenged Dave's assertion that you shouldn't say boo to a goose, stating that the saying in fact refers to a shy person who 'wouldn't say boo to a goose'. Rachel ruled that Chris was correct, but Dave insisted that if you say boo to a goose it will bite you. Secondly, Yogi and Boo-boo live in Jellystone Park, not Yellowstone. And lastly, Alexander Graham Bell did not invent the telephone outright, in fact several individuals were involved and wiki describes the invention as "the culmination of work done by many individuals, the history of which involves a collection of claims and counterclaims...[and] an array of lawsuits founded upon the patent claims of several individuals." (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invention_of_the_telephone for the full story, which I found fascinating, but maybe I'm just a geek.)

Today's Transcript:

The vocalist on Zero 7's 'Destiny' is called Sia and is from Australia. Australia has a lot of indigenous wildlife, such as koalas and kangaroos. kangaroos carry their young in a pouch. If you swap the first letter of 'pouch' for a 'C' you get 'couch', which is a good thing to sit on while you have your tea in front of the telly. 'Telly' rhymes with 'jelly', which is good fun at a childrens' party. 'Party People' was a hit for 911. 911 is the American equivalent of 999. If you add 9, 9 and 9 you get 27. 27 is how old Macauley Culkin will be this year on his birthday in August. August is when the football season starts again. Football is something that both Robbie Williams and Mark Owen are good at. Robbie Williams and Mark Owen both used to be in Take That, which links to Take That and 'Back For Good'.

Primal Scream, Loaded

Today's Transcript:

Take That reformed last year and are now bigger than Robbie Williams, which is ironic. 'Ironic' was a big hit for Alanis Morrisette. Alanis Morrisette is from Cabada, which is a cold place where you can make igloos. Igloos are constructed from blocks of ice. 'Ice Ice Baby' was a hit for Vanilla Ice, who is from Miami in Florida. Florida is a major producer of orange juice. Orange Juice had a hit with 'Rip It Up'. Rip it up is what you might do if you weren't happy with your homework. Homework is what you get when you're at school. The school system is different in Scotland to in England. It was Scotland that we were in this time last year for Radio 1's Big Weekend in Dundee, and one of the highlight bands were Primal Scream, which links to Primal Scream and 'Loaded'.

Today's Transcript:

Loaded is a word that can describe a lorry, which means the same as truck. 'Truck' rhymes with 'luck', which is what you need if you're planning on winning the lottery. The Lottery on Wednesdays is now presented by Scott Mills. Mills were used in the olden days for the production of cotton. Cotton is the surname that links Fearne and Dot. Dot-to-dot is a game that involves a pencil. Instead of having lead in the middle, pencils now normally have graphite. Graphite comes from carbon so is related to coal. Coalmining was a big industry in Northern England, but most collieries have now closed down. A colliery wheel features on the emblem of Sunderland FC. Today's Transcript:

Breakout is what you might want to try if you were in prison, which is also known as doing porridge. Porridge is what the three little bears liked to eat in the story of Goldilocks, who fell asleep in the bears' house in the woods. The woods are a good place to go if you want to photograph squirrels. Squirrels have big teeth and bushy tails. Tales were the speciality of Hans Christian Andersen. Hans Christian Andersen shares the same surname as Clive Anderson and Gillian Anderson from 'The X-Files'. 'Files' is an anagram of 'flies', which are what men have on their jeans. Jeans are worn by The View for at least three days, which is almost half of a week. Weak is the opposite of strong, which is a word you might use to describe Hulk Hogan, who could probably tip over a transit van. When you think of the word 'van' in the context of classic rock you think of Van Halen, which links to Van Halen and 'Jump'.

Flaws:

South america is where Shakira is from. Shakira collaborated on her latest record with Beyonce. Beyonce shares the same surname as Nick Knowles from 'DIY SOS'. 'SOS' was a big hit for Abba, who were from Sweden, a bit like Ace of Base. The base is an integral part of a cheesecake, which is a popular dessert in New York. New York is the setting for the tv show 'Friends', which starred Lisa Kudrow, who was also in 'Dr Dolittle 2'. Dr Dolittle could talk to animals. The Animals had a hit with 'House Of the Rising Sun'. Today's Transcript:

Medina is the name of a city in Saudi Arabia, which is the burial place of the prophet Mohammed. Muhammed Ali was probably the greatest boxer of all time, and his real name was Cassius Clay. Clay is what you might find on a potters' wheel. The wheel was one of the first things to be invented in the Stone Age. The Stone Age is the period of history where The Flintstones is set. The Flinstones were led by Fred, and his best friend was called Barney Rubble. A barney is another word for a row. Row is what you might do on a boat. Boats were an important part of life for the ancient Greeks, many of whom lived in Athens. Technotronic featuring Felly, Pump Up The Jam

Today's Transcript:

A cast is what people might sign for you if you'd broken your leg. Leg is a popular cut of lamb. Lamb, first name Alan, used to play cricket and was big mates with Ian Botham, who's got a son called Liam. Liam Botham shares the same first name as Liam Howlett, who's the leader of the Prodigy. The Prodigy are from Essex, which has a coastline on the North Sea. The North Sea is a good place for getting oil, which is made from crushed fossils and stuff. Fossils are normally studied in archaeology, which is something you might do at school, like plate tectonics. If you add an 'A', an 'O' and an 'R' to 'tectonic' you get 'Technotronic', which links to Technotronic and 'Pump Up The Jam'.

Flaws:

To make 'tectonic' into 'Technotronic' you need a 'H', 'N', 'O' and an 'R'. It's possible that Dave may have said 'H' instead of 'A' and I misheard him, but either way he was at least one letter out!

Jam can be made from all sorts of different fruits, such as raspberries and gooseberries. The word gooseberry can also mean someoe who hangs around awkwardly with a couple. If you remove the 'L' from 'couple' you're left with 'coupe', which is a type of sports car. Cars are a type of vehicle. 'Vehicles and Animals' was the title of the debut album by Athlete. Athlete's foot is a fungal infection which can be treated with powder. 'Powder' rhymes with 'chowder', which is a type of soup. Soup Dragons had a big hit with 'I'm Free'. "I'm free" is probably one of the first things that Nelson Mandela said when he got out of jail. Jail is where you might be if somebody grassed you up. Michael Jackson, Beat It

Today's Transcript:

Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey's dad used to present 'Top Gear', before the days of James May and Richard Hammond. Hammond is a word associated with organs. The word organs is also used to describe some bits of the human body. 'Body of Evidence' was a film starring Madonna. Madonna is of Italian descent, as is Frankie Dettori. Frankie Dettori is good at riding horses. Horses are for courses, while courses are also for golf, which was possibly invented by the Chinese, who also invented noodles. Noodles are a good alternative to rice. Rice, first name Anneka, has spent much of her professional life in a helicopter. Helicopters are used to transport the rich and famous around, such as Michael Jackson, which links to Michael Jackson and 'Beat It'.

The Verve, Bitter Sweet Symphony

Today's Transcript:

Michael Jackson's brother Jermaine was recently in the 'Big Brother' house, which is now full of annoying women. 'Women' rhymes with 'swimming', which is what Sharron Davies is good at. 'At The River' is a record by Groove Armada, whose Andy is very tall, a bit like a basketball player. Basketball is also known as shooting hoops. 'Hoops' rhymes with 'loops', which you might find on a rollercoaster. 'Rollercoaster' was a hit for B*Witched, whose first single was called 'C'est La Vie'. "C'est la vie" is how a Frenchman would say "that's life" in his native tongue. Tongue and groove is something you might do to wood. Wood comes from trees, which grow in forests. Forrest Whittaker is an actor, who shares the same surname as Maria Whittaker, who used to be a Page 3 girl when she was about 25 or 26. 26 is the junction on the M6 for Wigan, which is where The Verve are from, which links to The Verve and 'Bitter Sweet Symphony'.

The Chemical Brothers, Let Forever Be

Today's Transcript:

The Verve don't get any money from 'Bitter Sweet Symphony', cos it all goes to paying the Rolling Stones for the use of the sample. If you remove the first letter of 'sample' you're left with 'ample', which is a word that can precede 'parking'. Parking can be a problem in central London. 'London Calling' was a record by the Clash. 'Clash' rhymes with 'mash', which is one of my favourite types of potato. Potatoes were first introduced to the UK by Sir Walter Raleigh. Sir Walter Raleigh was knighted, a bit like Sir Paul McCartney. Paul McCartney used to be in the Beatles. One of the most famous Beatles albums is 'Seargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band', which was released on the 1st of June 1967. One person who I'd imagine would have a copy of that albumm is Noel Gallagher, who sang on the Chemical Brothers' hit 'Let Forever Be', which links to The Chemical Brothers and 'Let Forever Be'.

Flaws:

Mash is not a type of potato, it's a method of cooking them; and whilst Raleigh has been credited with bringing potatoes back to Britain, they were in fact already known via the Spanish. I'm also dubious about Dave's claim that The Verve make no money at all from 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' as they wrote the lyrics, but can find no evidence to confirm or dispute this.

JFK was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas. Dallas is a city in Texas whose American football team are called the Cowboys. Cowboys wear chaps and big hats. Hats are worn on the head. Heads is the opposite of tails. Tails are found on rabbits. Rabbits are kept in a hutch, and to stop them from escaping you'd normally fit the hutch with a lock. Feeder, Just The Way I'm Feeling

Today's Transcript:

A prayer is what you might say in church. 'Church Of the Poison Mind' was a hit for Culture Club. Culture Club are fronted by Boy George, who recently had to pick up litter. Litter is also a word associated with the birth of kittens. Kittens like to play with wool. Wool comes from sheep, who like to live on hills. Hill's Angels were the girls who used to be on TV with Benny Hill, who was from Southampton, a bit like Craig David. Craig David shares one name in common with David Copperfield, who's good at magic. Magic often involves hats and rabbits and sawing women in half. A half is equal to 50%. 50 is the age when you become officially old. 'Old Before I Die' was a big hit for Robbie Williams when he was a bit tubby. If you were a bit tubby cos someone had been giving you loads of cakes and biscuits and stuff you might describe them as a feeder, which links to Feeder and 'Just The Way I'm Feeling'.

Happy Mondays, Step On

Today's Transcript:

Feeder's Grant Nicholas is from Newport in South Wales, the same area as Goldie Lookin' Chain. A chain is something you might find on a toilet or a Rottweiler. Rottweilers are big scary German dogs. Dogs tend to smell more in the summer because the hot weather makes them sweat. If you remove the 'A' from 'sweat' you're left with an anagram of 'stew', like the beef stew Gordon Ramsey made last night on 'The F-Word'. 'The F-Word' is on Channel 4. 'Fore' is what you'd shout at somebody if they were about to be hit on the head with a cricket or a golf ball. Golf balls are easy to lose in long grass, which is known in golfing terms as the rough. Rough is how you might describe a badger's bottom. Badgers are quite fierce, and might be able to win a fight against a fox. Fox, first name Neil, used to be known as Doctor. If you were a real doctor and had a set of scales and wanted to know how much a patient weighed, you might ask them to "step on", which links to the Happy Mondays and 'Step On'.

Flaws:

Texters challenged Dave on the sweating dogs issue. According to wiki, it is a common misconception that dogs do not sweat; they do, mainly through their footpads, but only a small fraction of a dog's excess heat is lost this way. Primarily, dogs regulate their body temperature through panting. So the fact that dogs smell is not in fact related to their sweating.

Step on is what you might do to a skateboard. Skateboarding tends to be most popular with spotty youths who tend to hang around in shopping centres. Centre is a part of the Earth. 'Earth Song' was a hit for Michael Jackson, whose brother is called Randy. 'Randy' rhymes with 'handy', as in Handy Andy, who used to do 'Changing Rooms' with Anna Ryder Richardson. Anna Ryder Richardson shares one name in common with Kieron Richardson, whose cousin Charlie is in the 'Big Brother' house. 'House' rhymes with 'mouse', which is something you might have to catch with a trap, a bit like bears. Bears are big fans of fresh salmon and have been known to fight fishermen for their food. Food is prepared in a kitchen, which is somewhere that's subject to hygiene regulations to make sure everything is clean and not dirty, which links to Christina Aguilera and 'Dirrty'.

Motley Crue, Girls Girls Girls

Today's Transcript:

Christina Aguilera used to do 'Mickey Mouse Club', along with Justin Timberlake. Justin Timberlake is in Memphis in Tennessee. Tennessee is probably the only American state that contains four 'E's. 'E' is the next-door neighbour of 'F'. 'The F-Word' is Gordon Ramsey's current TV show, the theme tune for which is by Babybird, who's best known for their only hit 'You're Gorgeous'. Gorgeous George is a character in the film 'Snatch', which also stars Brad Pitt, who's in 'Ocean's 13' with George Clooney, who was also in 'Ocean's 12' with Julia Roberts, who was also in 'Pretty Woman' with Richard Gere. Richard Gere lives in Malibu, which is where they film 'Baywatch'. 'Baywatch' star Pamela Anderson used to be married to Tommy Lee of Motley Crue, which links to Motley Crue and 'Girls Girls Girls'.

Flaws:

Babybird did not only have one hit - in fact they had a total of eight UK top 40 hits, although only one apart from 'You're Gorgeous' made top 20 ('Candy Girl' in February 1997). Additionally, I'm not sure if Dave is correct in stating that only one American state has four 'E's in its name, but it's a difficult thing to research.

Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee shares the same surname as Sammy Lee, who's the manager at Bolton Wanderers. Bolton Wanderers have many celebrity supporters, including Dave Spikey. Spiky is how you might describe the hair of Gareth Gates. Gates are used in farming to prevent animals moving from one field to another. 'One To Another' was a big hit for the Charlatans, who this weekend played the Rockness festival in Scotland. Dundee in Scotland is where Snow Patrol were formed when the band were at university. University is where you'd find lots of students, who get grants in order to buy cider and chocolate. Chocolate will make a mess if it melts in your pocket on a sunny day. Wyclef Jean, Gone Til November

Today's Transcript:

'Mysterious Ways' was taken from the album 'Achtung Baby'. 'Baby Can I Hold You Tonight' was a hit for Tracy Chapman, but was covered by Boyzone. Boyzone were managed by Louis Walsh, who was also involved with Westlife. Westlife's Nicky Byrne was once on the books of Leeds United. Leeds United are currently going through a bit of a sticky patch. A patch is what you'd see on the eye of singer Gabrielle. Gabrielle had a hit with 'Dreams'. Dreams are what you have in your sleep, and sleep is something I might have got a bit too much of last night. 'Last Night' was a hit for the Strokes. Strokes are a nice thing if you're a dog. If you were a dog travelling to the UK from Continental Europe you'd need to spend six months in quarantine, which means you'd be gone til November, which links to Wyclef Jean and 'Gone Til November'.

Flaws:

November is five months away, not six. Besides which, dogs travelling within the EU no longer need to spend time in quarantine at all, but instead wait in their home country for the results of a rabies blood test.
