Long time lurker on these forums, but this is my first post – and probably my last to be fair. I haven’t listened from the start; I only became a regular listener from around 2006, thanks to the introduction of a DAB Radio as my alarm clock! – And it didn’t take me long to become glued like the rest of you.
What I have always loved about it is the open and personal format of the show, it sounds like they’re chatting to you as regular mates down the pub. I usually sit back in my bed from 6:30 and just listen to them, just as if they’re in my room talking to me. I can’t think of another radio show that has that sort of effect, the team chemistry is unique.
I still see the lazy comments from individuals and some journalists – ‘’Motor mouth DJ is going’’ ‘’Great – we can hear some music”. But they’re comments made by people who haven’t listened, and who simply don’t get it. It’s exactly how Chris Moyles put it in his leaving announcement ‘’to the people who think it’s sad – it’s only a radio show - you don’t get it’’.
If you love the medium of Radio, which I do and all of you lot do, then you can appreciate what a tremendous broadcaster he is. He’s got an amazing ability to hold a show to an audience of 8m people, but still make it feel personal. His technical ability on the desk is second to none, you see a lot of DJ’s getting their producers to press the buttons – but Chris is probably better than most producers at driving the gear.
So, we’re not only losing a great format and a great team – but we’re losing one of, if not the best, broadcasting talents in the country and our radio’s will be a pretty quiet place whilst he’s not around, that’s for sure.
But I understand why it’s happening, and I totally get what Ben Cooper and R1 are doing. Radio 1 needs to hit its format, which is a youth driven station supporting new artists and bands. The reality is that Chris Moyles and the format of that show doesn’t fit anymore. Be honest, how many of you lot see the music in the Chris Moyles show as an interval? A period to get up and get ready for work? I know I do!
But that’s not what Radio 1 want; they need to be seen as a station which is promoting and championing music and new talent, which is what Grimshaw will offer. It’s a completely different format, but a format that hits all the buttons for R1 and their targets.
With the changing face of Radio 1, and their need to keep up with their demographic it was inevitable and I’ve felt it’s been imminent for a good 6 months now. But I’ll never forget it, it’s been part of my life for the last 6 and a bit years and like most, I’ve had so many ups and downs during that time - but this show has always given me a smile during the times when things haven’t been too great personally.
So, thanks to all the team for providing one of the best radio shows that has graced the medium in my lifetime.
Now…what the hell do I wake up to??
