The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Let me elaborate.

John Paul II was pope for 26 years, a lot longer than a regular pope reign and the longest reign in over 100 years (oh yes, wiki is my friend). As a result, people became very attached to him, and so for the next pope they deliberately went with someone much older, so he would have a much shorter reign.

Does anybody else think they might have chosen Grimmy with the thought that he won't last as long and won't have such a historic impact on the breakfast show?

Grimshaw is younger than Chris was when he started on the show. It will be a bloody long time (Years/Decades) before anybody gets even close to Moyles record reign.

How is Grimmy like the new pope? (discuss)

Grimmy has messy hair
Grimmy has fans who scream when he is seen
Grimmy likes cloaks
Grimmy has a bulletproof vehicle

(the last two may not be true but I had to list more than two similarities)

I don't think the potential historic impact is of particular concern. I'd guess fitting the 'image' and the 'target audience' is of more concern - over and above quality of output as well, I think.

That's a daft comment. If the new output gets an increase in the target audience then by definition it's higher quality TO THAT AUDIENCE.

There are so many things wrong with that that I don't know where to begin.

Erm, ok, what if THAT AUDIENCE had simply never listened before and therefore the previous quality cannot be judged?

If you never saw Les Dawson presenting Blankety Blank, how can you judge Lily Savage to be of higher quality?

I do think there is some logic to Grimmy only taking over as a buffer, I you like. Obviously, whoever took over from Chris was gonna have a hard job, which is why they didn't give it to Greg, to protect him. If Grimmy is a hit, then great, if not, then he will be replaced by Greg. If Greg took straight over from Chris and the show struggled, where would Greg go from there!? I like Greg and think he deserves to take over long term, but it's easier replacing someone that struggled rather than someone that is synonymous with the slot.

By a few months?

Hope people send a clear message to the bbc that presenter's age does not = target audience age in their ability to communicate, by switching off radio1, mornings especially.

Look forward to the 'shock millions leave radio 1' in the next few months.
